Does anyone have a recommenedation for a diesel? Preferably an IDI. I have the chance to either buy a 1989 Ford with a 7.3 IDI (~450,000 mi, used as a heavy duty truck for work), a Chevy LUV C223 a turbo diesel (~220k mi, bad fuel filter* and been sitting for 20+ years), or a 1991 Volvo with D24T (750k mi, with all maintenance logs).

*Car cranks but engine dies in a few seconds after.
All of those are ancient and you'll be disappointed with the power output.

A modern 5.9 Cummins (common rail or 12 valve) is well worth the extra cash for something that is nearly bulletproof and can make insane power. The IDI is reliable but not nearly as fun or as braindead as the Cummins, and the luv and the Volvo are gonna be real slow.

Are you getting a great deal on these? all of these are cool, but I'd hate to take them cross country. If you're in the states and dead set on getting a diesel, now is probably a good time. Everyone is selling their mall cruisers in my area because they can't keep up with the pump prices.

Nah, most of them have been automatic at least to my knowledge. Some have gone to 400,000 miles without the engine giving out so I might give it a shot when I move out. The 2007 Dodge Dakota has been an amazing truck for me but I need more leg room and seats for friends and luggage.
I had a 2003 Dodge Dakota I bought a few years ago, and that puppy had the most comfortable seats. Which is a good thing, because you sit in there waiting for a tow a lot.

Nah, it's pretty reliable. Just awful handling (bad for a truck even), no power with the V6, terrible gas mileage, weak breaks. I pulled a project car on a trailer with it across a few states and I would not recommend it.

Bajas are cool, wish I could find one. They make them turbo'd too. I think you'd get more out of a 4.0 ranger from 2011 or back. Nissan frontiers have a supercharged option that looks fun. Mexicans always drive them in my area. Colorado's might be an okay option, just don't get the 5 cylinder. The timing chain lives on the back of the engine, and it always goes out. Tacomas are expensive for a good reason.

I took a road trip in a 2007 Tacoma and it was a little rough. Then I took the same trip in a Maverick and it was butter smooth. I strongly recommend the Maverick if you're not interested in working on an old truck, and just want something with a bed. The Baja might be a little too old to be reliable

Wha year maverick? I’ve found this Baja a state over and it looks pretty smooth, two tone paint unfortunately. The engine also looks relatively easy to work on, that’s one of my most important things to worry about.

A 2021. I love the two-tone paint Bajas. Yellow and grey is pretty common. The engine on subarus are pretty simple, although you should watch out for sparkplugs and coil packs. The EJ251 (03-05) and EJ253 (05+) are notorious for having head gasket failures. Since it's a boxer engine that means the heads, and by extension the plugs are way out in the sides of the engine bay where it's hard to get to. If the gasket fails you have to pull the engine. Check to see if this work has been done, or if you feel comfortable doing the upper-end work yourself

Fair point, I’ve checked the dealship reviews and what nots and so far it’s a solid 4 star. Seems there’s one jackass that caused some customers trouble, overall only a single complaint about engine matinence from them. Spark plugs and coils won’t be a problem for me I can get some iridium’s and lifetime warranty coil packs pretty cheap. Also the one I’m looking at has no accidents and is about 130k in mislead, for an 03 it seems pretty decent. Honestly I never liked two toners I’m thinking of either a solid color or some sideway stripes.

Getting the plugs isn't an issue, installing them in that tight space is. Good luck!

To add to the recommendations of utility focused vehicles, if you want to keep it on a sub 10k budget, check out the first gen BMW X5. They're slowly creeping up in value as they gain appreciation for their mechanical simplicity and reliability. You can find them for days for ~5k in good condition and auto. Bonus points if you can find a manual one. Ton of car for the money and super easy to do diy work on them.

Thanks for the advice. I’ll still pin my dreams on the Baja since Subarus ain’t much of a problem for me, but I’ll keep the BMW in mind. Who knows maybe it’s closer but you don’t see many in the South.

Really? I live a few states away and only seen at least one bmw a week passing along. I also live near a big city so that’s also shocking, of course we have the teslas and the fags too.

The 7.3 idi seems like the better option compared to the other two listed. Personally I would look into getting a Ford with the 4.9 gasser if you're just looking for a truck to haul stuff with.

D24T is out of the running, owner went through the records and it said that it jumped time and threw rods before. At least the owner was upfront and said I probably needed to swap an engine in...

I was gonna grab the 223 for the MPG, don't really care about the speed. Also might convert it to run on something stupid like ATF fluid or used frier oil.

I guess the big brain move would to be grab a truck to buy the other truck, restore the latter and then sell the former.
Too late for that though with how everyone's selling their trucks.

I do want to say, I saw an Isuzu Trooper with the 4JB1 turbo for sale (~6000?) and it had only 50,000 miles on it... Too bad I can't fit stuff I move often on the Trooper.

My buddy bought a decently upgraded 92 XJ for $500 this weekend. We were out at a national forest hitting some trails. He went on the west end while I took the east to see who would get to the summit first. I get to the top and wait a bit for him, realize he is taking way too long and bust out my radio to see whats up. Turns out he was trying to reach me to come tow another XJ out of the trail for him.

The owner, a 20 something with too much money, blew up the motor on the trail in a muddy section and his buddy couldn't get him out, so when my friend drove by he stopped in his XJ and asked if the guy needed help, the dude said "I'll sell this thing to you right now for $500 because I don't want to have it towed and I'm tired of how much it sucks in mud" . SO my buddy had been trying to reach me for an hour (no cell service and I had my radio set super low because my son was with me and had us listening to a Sponge Bob album) to come snag the Jeep out of the mud and our buddy with a car trailer was already on his way to get the thing loaded once I brought it to the trail head.

The damn thing had mickey's, a 4 inch lift and really nice shocks and Yukon gears and axles. Not to mention it came with free stuff

Was the previous owner some weeb?

Definitely a degenerate from those stickers.

Speaking of which, I swear craigslist have the heaviest crack addicts who think their pos sedan that wont run is worth 10K despite being probably a mobile meth lab.
Crackheads all think their inoperable 14 year old beaters are worth 10x their actual value because it's literally the most valuable thing they own and they have no perception of how sad that is

Pretty sure we could put together a thread of these postings for the lols. I've seen someone asking 5k for a Chevy short wide with a cracked block and busted trans.

This one made me laugh though:
