Carrots recalled after E. coli outbreak linked to one death, CDC says

Carrots and baby carrots sold in the United States under popular brand names such as Nature’s Promise, Wegmans and Trader Joe’s are being recalled over an E. coli outbreak that has left at least one person dead and 15 others hospitalized, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Sunday.

According to the CDC, 39 cases of E. coli have been detected across 18 states in an outbreak linked to organic carrots supplied by Grimmway Farms. The products are no longer sold on store shelves, the CDC said, but may still be in consumers’ homes.

The recall comes on the tail of a larger E. coli outbreak late last month that was linked to McDonald’s, leading to one death, 34 hospitalizations and 104 cases across 14 states.

Escherichia coli, or E. coli, is a bacterium found in the environment, foods, water and the intestines of people and animals. Harmful forms of the bacteria can cause diarrhea and urinary tract infections, pneumonia, sepsis, kidney failure or even death.

Young children, older adults, people with weakened immune systems and international travelers are the most likely to get infected, according to the CDC. However, anyone can become infected through contact with animals or other people, or by swallowing the bacteria via contaminated food or water, the CDC said.

The CDC advises that the public discard the products and monitor for symptoms of a severe E. coli infection, which include diarrhea and a fever above 102 degrees, persistent vomiting to the point of not being able to keep liquids down, and signs of dehydration. It also recommends that families wash items and surfaces that may have touched any recalled carrots.

Here are the specifics of the recall:

Every time I try to incorporate more veggies into my daily meals theres a damn recall. I've dodged so many romaine recalls.
It's almost always the overpriced organic shit that has issues like this. Raw carrots are a good snack especially if you can find them already washed, peeled, and ready to eat, just avoid the rip-off organic stuff.

I just eat it straight as a side with my beef/lamb meals, I guess that would be normal? I had to search Bavarian sauerkraut and it appears to just be a form of serving it with other ingredients.
I was under the impression that Bavarian sauerkraut is a type of sauerkraut that has a hint of sweetness to it. That's how it's described at the local German Pub and having tried it and the normal German sauerkraut they offer I prefer the Bavarian. It's not really sweet, its still sauerkraut, but there's a hint of sweetness with the sauer that gives it a more complex flavor profile.

We've had two or three recalls of fresh produce in the UK, all for E.Coli. I guess this is the price you pay for having shit-covered paki fingers picking your fruit.

Well fuck.. think i ate a bag of these raw with ketchup about a month ago.. I'm long past having to worry but still... OCD sickness phobia engaged. :/

I knew we shouldn't have gotten organic. I think they were out of the normal ones at the time or something.

You eat carrots with ketchup?

A lot of big recalls lately btw, I wonder what's going on in the processing factories.

Remember these are organic carrots, not the regular ones. Just looking at the brands, 365 is Whole Foods, Good & Gather is Target, GreenWise is Publix, Marketside is Walmart, O Organics is Albertsons/Safeway and the dozen or so other brands owned by them, Simple Truth is Kroger and the dozen or so other brands owned by them, Trader Joe's and Wegmans are self-explanatory, President's Choice is Canadian only, and the others are other brands not tied to a specific chain.
