The Twitter spat over how Earthworm Jim is "lol no longer relevant" is pure "I'm not mad, you're mad" copium. It truly doesn't matter that Earthworm Jim hasn't been in the public conscious for ages now, TenNapel created something original. Someone out there still likes the IP, and someone out there will discover it in the future. Until we have another Library of Alexandria incident, Earthworm Jim and Catscratch (that was also TenNapel) are theoretically forever, and are still available to those who seek them out. RJ Palmer's fan-art will still float around the digital realm, yes, but it's not a fully-realized original IP because it's Pokémon fan-art. Palmer can say that he was involved with the Detective Pikachu movie, but I don't think there was a lot of him still left over in the final product, y'know?

That's the real difference. TenNapel can still say he left a part of him somewhere out in the world, but can Palmer, truly? Can any of these Twitter speds truly claim they have planted some kind of flag in the world of art that will last, that will stand on its own as something wholly original?

The thing about fan-art is that yes, it helps you get noticed in fan circles, but if you don't make the effort to use it as a foundation to make something unique to you, you're not going to get anywhere. It's rare for fanboys to actually make an impact in their favorite IP outside of the Internet. Michael Dougherty is a Godzilla fanboy through and through, and he made his own original IPs as a filmmaker, but he did still manage to put in something unique into the Godzilla IP when he was given the opportunity to. That's how much he cared about the IP, and about cinema. Rebecca Sugar fucking made her own original IP despite starting out as a fan-artist (it gets points docked from it because it relied a bit too much on anime references, though), and got herself rich off of it (somehow). And mind you, Steven Universe is well on its way to becoming irrelevant.

Artists who truly care about the craft don't cry and bitch about their lack of success to others. Stop wanking it to porn and either just try harder, or throw in the towel and go do something else if fame is all that matters.

It's borderline depressing that you have to get into the industry by doing fanfiction and fanart of well established IPs. I'm not saying originality is dead, but I am saying that it's on life support and it will die in about two to five years.

That's half true and a common for autist who refuse to draw anything original. The simple fact is companies do love those passionate for their IP in a way that benefits in the long one. "Hey this guy is willing to work to the bone for this IP we careless about, let's hire him." And although this might be a good thing for the person hired, just as it was stated in this thread, you'd only be known for that one thing and probably might not get any work for anything else.

Most people do like familiar stuff, don't get me wrong. But, you can convince a normie why they should give your OCs an actual chance over the pre-established ones. You just have to put in the elbow grease and do more with them, rather than leaving them to the side, floating in a white void.

As long as humans exist, there will still be original ideas ripe for the taking. The grassroots indie animation scene proves it's viable. Seriously, people are so quick to go doomer when there's countless underrated content waiting to be found.

It's an industry where a key skill is your ability to copy any given style and be dead on model in a short amount of time, and then spend however long you're on the project plugged into your spot in the production line. This is just the nature of a medium where you need to have an entire team turn out a work that looks as if it was drawn by a single person.

It's not really about individual creativity and self expression unless you're down at the indie film festival level putting out 2-6 minute shorts every couple years.

This is the guy telling you that AI art is stealing his job.
This is the last piece of the puzzle that makes me willing to bet that he is going to wind up on a sex offender registry eventually.

For a long time I almost pitied him as someone who peaked in his twenties and learned all the wrong lessons from early success but actually seeing him drains me of charity.

I like Gravity Falls, it was fresh enough that other people wanted to try and imitate it. Was it a sign of things to come? Unfortunately, but when it first aired, it was "different" from whatever else was on at the time. Think its closest "sister" series at the time was either Phineas and Ferb or Adventure Time.

Primal is its own thing in the world of adult animation, but Genndy Tartovsky is a veteran and knows how to be original. Should he really be counted here among the slop?

And Steven Universe was an original IP like I had said, it just relied too heavily on anime influences.

So they're out there, they're just really scant right now.

Over the Garden Wall was good. Short so it didn't overstay it's welcome, told a story and had a good conclusion, and it had intricately drawn backgrounds rather than clip art. Also it had Elijah Woods and Tim Curry as voice actors.

In terms of adult animated shows, yes. Primal is an outstanding masterpiece that doesn't rely on the same copy-paste template, but was rather being its own thing.

There's Amphibia, Molly McGee, Wander Over Yonder, Hamster and Gretel, Kid Cosmic, Infinity Train etc.

Did MrEnter draw this? This is honestly not far off ‘growing Around’ levels of polish im completely serious.
From what i understand, the creator of this project is a Disabled Chinese-American artist by the name of Marie Lum, who's worked on shows for Cartoon Network, Disney and Dreamworks.

And the reason she's disabled is because she suffers from a wide range of Medical Disorders.

But even then, i feel like this Pen Pals Forever show is just gonna be nothing more than another self-insert fantasy show like Owl House or High Guardian Spice.

Always assume this with every modern cartoon created by a woman. They don't get into the industry because of talent, after all.
