It's because western culture is so infantilised. Do you remember being 12? Hearing kids on the playground talk about how Digimon is way better than Pokemon and becoming legitimately angry? How could they say such a thing? How could they be so wrong?Really, the biggest problem is that people nowadays are way too passionate about things that don't matter, specially media.
I do understand where the "let people enjoy things" mentality come from, it kinda sucks hearing that people hate the things you enjoy, it ruins the vibes you know? But for some people, they take that statement as an insult to their own person, as if disliking a TV show is somehow as bad as calling them stupid or wishing death upon them.
People really need to learn to just ignore and move on. There are definetly some things which are worth defending for, but my favorite movie being called bad by internet users isn't one of them.
Being unreasonably passionate about dumb shit is part of growing up. It's how we practice caring about things that actually do matter. Only, most of the population doesn't grow up. They stay in that phase forever. Consoomer slop is their lives, just like it was when they were in grade school. And it will continue to be their lives forever.
In other words, how could someone care about things that matter if nothing in their life matters?
