CBS reality shows must now have 50% non-White casts, network says

CBS’ slate of reality shows, which include “Survivor,” “Big Brother” and “Love Island,” will become more diverse in 2021.

On Monday, the network introduced an initiative that requires these shows to ensure that 50% of their casts are Black, Indigenous or People of Color, or BIPOC. Additionally, the network has committed to putting at least 25% of its development budget towards creators and producers who are BIPOC.

These reality TV targets will kick off during the 2021-22 broadcast season.

“The reality TV genre is an area that’s especially underrepresented, and needs to be more inclusive across development, casting, production and all phases of storytelling,” George Cheeks, president and CEO for the CBS Entertainment Group, said in a statement.

This initiative follows targets that CBS set for its scripted programs earlier this year as well as a deal to create programming with the NAACP.

CBS has also mandated that its writers’ rooms must be staffed with a minimum of 40% BIPOC representation with the goal of increasing that number to 50% in the 2022-23 season.

Hell, I forgot Survivor and Big Brother were even still on the air. They were really big around 2000-2001 but I always figured they crashed and burned around 2004 or somewhere close to that.
Don't tell that to the Survivor fanbase or else they'll sperg non-stop about you for weeks on end.

It's not just whites in general who are under-represented, it's northern European whites and protestants.

Watch an hour of MSNBC or look at the front page of the New York Times.

If I had to guess, I would say the average hour of MSNBC is 25% black, 25% Jewish, 10% Italian, 10% other Catholic, and 10% MIddle Eastern or South Asian. Leaving it at 20% for Andrew Yang and whites who don't fit into any of the above groups.

And then they're all SHOCKED! SHOCKED I SAY! when Trump gets elected.

Isn't it illegal in California to make hiring decisions based on race?

I'm sure there are exceptions for entertainment.

It's already the case on some of their shows like STD and Picard. They've added a new rule 2 years ago, they have quotas in front and behind the camera. The new showrunner of Discovery is a proud lesbian. Before the second season of STD they fired the original director of cinematography and announced that the new one was a black man. Jonathan Frakes for example is the only white man allowed to direct an episode of STD and Picard. Robert Duncan McNeill (who worked on Voyager and Enterprise) was initially supposed to direct an episode but the producers told him that they wouldn't hire another white man. Now he works on The Orville.

Well I guess that settles it. I'm not watching nuTrek.

Star Trek has traditionally been ahead of the curve on race (although not the gays), which is a big reason why I have no interest in this level of pandering. They were already doing what SJWs wanted, and it still wasn't good enough.

Maybe one of our resident lawyer kiwis can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this kind of discrimination is allowed because these employees are "performers". It's why Hooters can hire only hot women, because in the paperwork they aren't actually waitresses, they're performers.

There are only 2 white men on the show, one plays an alien so he wears prosthetics that covers his entire face/skin, the other is the gay character. The bridge crew is a Benetton ad. And I'm not even talking about the whole "X acceptance" stuff, like the obese starfleet officer (who won a marathon, I'm not kidding) or the extra in the wheelchair who rolls in the corridors of the ship in the background.

Not really. Trek was always diverse sure, but it used to represent a world where people weren't judged by their sex or their skin color. It's the opposite of what SJWs want.

What's disappointing about reality TV is so much of it chases that Instagram audience. Candidates for shows are vetted to be squeaky clean, and presentable enough to hawk travel ads and water bottles afterwards. Intersectional advertising. If the diversity also meant getting zany characters I'm all ears, but I know it won't.
I want to see the Latina from Tiger King be trapped in the Big Brother House with a vegan. I want to see 2 compton crackheads make their blood feud known on Survivor. I want to see drag queens get pissy over who deserved to front a Vegas show-- that last one happened on the most recent season of Drag Race btw. This shit only sounds insensitive because we've not seen it play out yet.

Its not all bad, I'd say the type of grifter that would take advantage of quotas like this would make for some funny television, video related. Its not like reality tv had any sense of quality to begin with.
I like how the channel clearly learned their lesson with race relations going forward, and all the other $1000 dollar challenges involve people who know each other IRL so there's some degree of decency at play.
Look at the team here and tell me it was gonna lead to a happy ending.
With 1 (maybe 2) exception, everybody there has money problems through their own choices. They decided they needed the money, but would quickly fritter it away like all the cash they accrued so far.
The 3 black people ganging up on everybody else is just the icing on the cake. Those 3 are in a race to talk about how they're oppressed so they deserve the cash, but nobody else is allowed to show solidarity. You're not seeing the fat girls lock arms to get the cash? Why? Because for some reason, the cast are predominantly selfish people. Note how the fat women are perfectly happy to go along with the racial grift unquestioned, until it starts to marginalise their odds! The blacks don't want the money for a fellow black, they just want to muscle out the competition and think it'll give themselves a coin-flips odds at getting the prize.
The bearded bugman in the back didn't even put up a fight. I thought that was mildly entertaining as an aside. Here's a guy who, if not completely politically disconnected (like a good consumer) he at least presents as a social justice placard waver, but even this allyship can't band-aid over his complete lack of drive in the situation, nor does it save him when the melanin mob come for a scalp.

The only one that seemed to deserve the money for predicaments beyond their control is the red woman, and even then she fucked herself by announcing her moral misgivings at their situation, which was never going to be rewarded by the piranhas she was thrown in with.

EDIT: Sorry for double post it was 2 hours :(
