So I am not actually reading that wall of text, but the whole 40-year-old woman playing a 14-year-old boy is yet another example of woke appropriation being OK - can you all imagine the uproar if it was a 40-year-old man portraying a teen girl?

I Don't know shit about the show and don't intend to because it looks awful, but what you suggest might not be the case.
I Don't think Americans 'get' pantomime, it's more of a European thing, but there's a long tradition in pantomime and theatre in general of women playing male roles in comedic performances, particularly young boys.
Peter Pan for example, the eternal 13yr old boy, is traditionally played on stage by an adult woman. Pantomime in general is full of drag, Cinderella's ugly sisters are almost always played by men.
Probably the closest thing Americans have these days to pantomime would be something like Tyler Perry's Medea.

All I'm saying is that this might be an attempt at an old theatrical shtick that just doesn't translate well to the screen (just look at that Dear Evan Hanson movie *shudder*) and not some SJW statement.

This feels like a shitpost. Why is there a 41 year old woman playing a male child.
My life was much better fifteen minutes ago, when I didn't know either of these... things... existed.

Someone pitched these shows to executives... and they green lit them. One of them is getting a second season. What fucking drugs are those executives on, meth?!

Can't speak to Chad, but PEN15 uses camera & editing tricks and age-appropriate stand-ins. The actual teen actors don't do anything more extreme than swearing and pretending to drink sometimes.

Much of the idea with that show is that adolescent girls go through some pretty gross, weird phases, hence the adult leads acting these things out as fictionalized versions of their younger selves. It's presented as gross and cringe-inducing, not enticing. It's not Euphoria.

I'll buy that, but will also counter: In the year 2022, what are the chances it isn't intended as some SJW statement?

Anyway, regardless of intent, the whole thing sounds like utterly contemptible shit.

Never heard of the show but it actually sounds interesting, kind of a like a chick version of the UK comedy series The Inbetweeners, which is a hilarious gross out comedy about just how frequently humiliating, awkward and desperate being a teenage boy can be.

pen15 is a semiautobiographical comedy. its hit or miss for me, the fun episodes are funny and eberything else is bland. but it has its moments.

chad seems likes its that but serious.

I'm genuinely surprised to learn that this show's main character isn't meant to be a tranny.
