I know Chris has trouble with body language, but you'd think a hissing and growling cat would be a dead giveaway that it doesn't want to be picked up and held.
It's not that he doesn't understand, it's that he doesn't care. In his mind, it goes something like, "I want to hold you, ergo you want to be held."
Nah, that's not the case. It's like how Chris ultimately plead guilty at his court case. Or how he pays bills. Chris is dumb as shit, but various types of realities he accepts. Mostly because he doesn't have any other option. Cats have razor sharp claws (assuming the Chandlers weren't shitty enough to have the cats declawed) and while the cats might end up being jerks for not letting him hold them, he's still aware (by cat force) that they might have opinions counter to what he wants.

If they got them from an animal shelter (like the Humane Society, for example), it's possible they were already fixed. The ones I got from there were.

My cat Maggie hates being held, but even she doesn't get that nasty. She kicks and squirms, and cries, but she's never hissed or scratched (at least not on purpose -- I've gotten scratched, but mostly from her trying to get free). But that's why I generally don't try to hold her for long periods of time -- only when I need to to carry her somewhere, or give her medicine. My cat Gypsy used to "growl" a wee bit when you'd pick her up, but it was more of a groan, nothing like that. That cat sounded PISSED. The only time I had a cat sound like that was at each other, not me. (I had a cat who'd beat up our dog)

From the way he reacted, it seems he thinks this is normal behaviour for cats. Which means that either the Chandler cats are so poorly socialized that they're semi-feral, or the cats are smart enough to know that Chris is toxic.
They can detect the autism.

Outdoor cats have an average lifespan of 3-5 years with a potential of 7 depending on environment, weather and food source, compared to an indoor cat's average lifespan of 12-15 years with a potential of 20. Being hit by a car is the number one cause of death for outdoor cats, while most indoor cats die of natural causes. A cat is more likely to be put to sleep within 1 to 14 days of being sent to an animal shelter than they are to be adopted. This depends on the shelter's feline storage capacity and the cat's condition upon arrival. Organisations like the SPCA often euthanise sick cats immediately because doing so carries a more positive benefit-cost ratio than quarantining them and risking the spread of infections. Shelters will also put cats down immediately if they are out of room and the cat doesn't look like it will be easy to adopt, in contrast with no-kill shelters that turn away drop-offs when they are out of room. But no-kill shelters aren't usually a good option either, as they are often overpopulated and over budget, leading to stressful, confined spaces and unclean living conditions.

Chris and Barb might neglect the cats but at least they aren't abusive to them. If the cats got hit by a car or got sick and found a spot under the hoard to die, at least they were free.

Well I don't think he was just holding it correctly. My current cat sometimes doesn't want to be held and wants to escape when I pick her up. So she'll wriggle and whatnot, but she doesn't get angry. But it's not like I'm holding her upside or letting her upper body dangle or shit like that. Cats (well, depending on their personalities, I guess) can get very pissed when you hold them awkwardly.

That's what that video looked more like to me, anyway. Chris was probably being his awkward, retarded self and doesn't know how to hold a cat so that's how he pissed it off.

Yes, but animals are excellent judges of character, so... :tomgirl:

Cats are pissy assholes anyways. Give me a good dog any day. wow

Bit of column A and a bit of column B, really. Cats do have memories about specific people, according to both my personal experience and some recent research. And if Chris made a habit of picking Kitty up in a painful way with his huge, clumsy paws, then Kitty would form an impression of him as "that guy who picks me up and it hurts." So Kitty could be reacting to the immediate pain and also thinking, "Oh, Godbearjesus, not this :briefs: again."

Chinese menu metaphor... talking about cats? I find this strangely amusing.

He wasn't holding the cat correctly, but that wouldn't result in the kind of hostility Kitty displayed. A cat not being held properly would squirm or thrash; the kind of deep growling and spitting Kitty was doing in that video marks a SERIOUSLY pissed off cat, and again, Chris seemed to think that was normal behaviour. It's really not.

Heh, oh no, you can definitely piss off cats like that.

Yeah. Chris doesn't exactly inspire me with confidence that he cares for his animals properly, but I've seen plenty of cats that live comfortable lives with good owners and still get really pissed off if you hold them wrong. Depends on the temperament of the cat in question (as well as its mood at the time). That his cat freaked out is indicative only of the fact that Chris probably never learned how to pick up cats correctly.

Neither of my cats ever acted as angry as Kitty in that video, and they've been through some shit by my sister and her cat-obsessed friends.

I just sent an email to the Madison-Greene County Humane Society with photos of the animals. I explained that a story about a local house fire went viral (mostly true) and that while I know the human family members are receiving donations and assistance, I want to check if any of their pets wound up in the shelter's care. With luck, they're there and we're able to sponsor them until they get home, or get a new home.

Brilliant. Nobody's ever emailed the humane society yelling about their vague suspicions of horribly mistreated pets, with zero evidence to back it up. They appreciate that sort of thing and will get on it right away. Very clever of you. =s

idk man, I'm not gonna be able to sleep at night if those animals go from a life of neglect to being euthanized a week or two after a fire

Except they'd probably get euthanized in a shelter if they get picked up..?

ADDENDUM:
The Chandlers are not malicious pet owners. They aren't the greatest and they're terribly ignorant about the needs of animals, but they are not willfully harming them and it's obvious that they care. I think you're making a big deal out of nothing.
It's not to say that I don't agree there are better owners out there for them, but your solution isn't exactly a great one. There is no guarantee they'll have a future if you try to get them taken in by a shelter.

You mustn't sleep at all considering the animals out the that are neglected and not owned by the chandlers.

inb4 "being euthanized is better than being owned by the chandlers!"
