Greco-Roman culture was VERY controlling of its women, like, full on Islam levels.
But also like Islam, that's "real" women, respectable women. Not whores, slaves and the dregs of society. Of course you could rape teenage redheaded Gaulish girls all you wanted.
Romans didn't have straight-gay so much as masculine-feminine. Men have a big sword between the legs for fucking (violently, vigorously pounding away) and women have a big crevice for taking it. So a man who gets his asshole or, maybe even worse, mouth screwed (think insult to the face) is the biggest sissy in the world, worthless disgrace to his own manhood, while the man who fucks him is an absolute Chad.
Greeks, it's controversial. I'm just saying what I learned in class and Symposium, but the professor was a fag hag and other people have posted on this website that it's all revisionist bullshit. Usually it's pitched like Greeks practiced homosexuality in an institution of pederasty that was supposed to be both grooming a young man for civil service and grooming him as in literally sexually grooming him. The young lad would be handed off to his rapist to be taught philosophy, rhetoric, practical things, how to exercise and wrestle (naked and oiled up, probably), how to wash his penis, not to be alarmed when the creepy old man who's washing his penis starts to jerk him off.
Importantly, it's embedded in a specific relationship that itself does not replace the marital institution (you had damn well better get married and breed more citizens for the polis), theoretically served some kind of function and did not subvert their gender roles as they understood it. The underage rape victim eromenos and pedo gay rapist erastes were committed to each other and when the eromenos got too old he'd be discarded to reenact his trauma on new victims an erastes now. Also, they weren't buggering each other, apparently back then they'd lube up the thighs and thigh-fuck.
Now, as I understand this pederasty was not always a feature of Greek society, not a feature of every city, earlier philosophers hated it, obviously at some point it went into decline, Romans thought they were faggots, and it was always an elitist thing. This leads me to think that, while it's presented like some normal thing in their world, it may have actually been every bit as degenerate and abnormal as the cult of trannydom/pedophilia/homosexuality in today's West. There are also arguments that being elite promotes faggotry, or that faggots tend to rise to form elite cabals. Either way, I have a feeling late-stage Athens might have just been the equivalent of San Francisco with a bunch of fruits, hated by the normal folks, running around grooming little boys.
Also keep in mind that cultures that are very repressive of their women, very cloistered (a respectable Greek woman didn't leave her house) often end up having tons of prison gay boys. Same shit happens in the Muslim world. I don't buy into the Kinsey-like "everyone's secretly bi" thing, but I do believe socialization shapes people quite a bit and if the lads don't have slave girls to molest or opportunities to date then they will:
A) Fuck their own sisters (what are you doing step-bro?)
B) Fuck each other (actually met a guy recently who claimed to go gay from lack of pussy)
But yeah, possibility every single bit of what I said was just fag hag fan fiction.
