Although there is no clear cut definition for these types games but what I believe is that it is a sub-genre of action games that are heavily focus on high skill fast paced combat that rewards the player for using the tools and mechanics offered by the game.

This definition might seem a bit broad and maybe some of you might be able to define it better than me and for that reason I have created this thread to discuss about these type of games.

What are your favorites from the genre, are there more games that fit the genre, do you agree or disagree with the definition?

I've been replaying Hi-Fi Rush on very hard, and the game is a fucking blast. It's probably the best character action game since DMC5.
But the assists are so broken, the moment you realize you can just spam your them the combat turns into a fucking mess, you deal way too much damage and it becomes hard to understand what is happening on screen.
I have to force myself to only use them only to break the enemies defense.

Bayonetta is one of my favorite games of all time, I've played all of them including Cereza and the Lost Demon. 3 did have a pretty bad ending but I enjoyed it for the most part and will likely replay it at some point.

With Kamiya gone, I have to wonder what the future of Bayonetta is going to be like, considering he claimed to have had a bunch more games planned. I'm a DMC fan too but always found Bayonetta less stressful (and less hand crampy) to play.

Kamiya only directed Bayo 1, the sequels where directed by other people with him only supervising them.
Maybe he had a large input as supervisor, but I think it's more of a bullshit title just to appease the fans.

didnt the dev studio for the game got revived by the company who made PUBG? if that so i would be worried

DMC5 is genre-defining. My cousin just got a PS5 after being out of consoles for a while and that was my first recommend after he talked about eating up Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. Speaking of, I guess I need to play that now. Can't believe ninja gaiden is a thing for the third time, but I'm happy for it.

BloodRayne was one of my favorite action games. When Terminal Reality released BloodRayne 1 & 2 Terminal Cut, which came as a surprise, it made me hopeful that they were developing another BloodRayne game. The updated versions added cut content from what I remember, controller support and a walking animation by gently moving the joystick without going into a full sprint.

Then a year after that they released BloodRayne: Betrayal – Fresh Bites. Which included higher resolution and voice acting from the original cast. All three games are good.

As for a name for these kind of games Benjamin "Yahtzee" Croshaw from Zero Punctuation called them spectacle shooters/fighters but I think action games would suffice.

As a character action game series, No More Heroes isn't much better than Bayonetta. Too much side bullshit that takes away from the core combat system. But as a weird, auteur pet project, NMH is great.
NMH3 has an in-game podcast after every single boss for Suda51 to sperg about Takashi Miike, which is finale'd by Miike himself showing up in a random cutscene so the main character can ask for a live-action adaptation of the game series. That is the kind of autistic heart and soul that is missing from game design these days.
I prefer retarded crap like that along with Kojima's Death Stranding nonsense, as opposed to the millions of live-service shooters and top-down corporate game design principles that have been filling the industry for years (Harada and Tekken 8 as a whole).

Let it be known.
W101 will always be the underdog Action game
it being stuck on the WIIU meant it was doomed for being niche to an already niche genre.
not even nintendo shills cared.

Wonderful 101 deserves much more love, it's the only action game I keep coming back to every year, I think a major factor on what makes a good Character action game is if nothing else plays like it.

I don't even want a sequel, I just want more people to play it.

DMC 1&3 are both amazing, but I haven't played 4 and 5 yet. Darksiders 1 is also really good, but I haven't played anything past that one yet.
All of the Darksiders games are pretty different.

2 much more of an open world RPG
3 is Darksoulsy

...Genesis was a top down Dialbo RPG. It is sad that we will never get a finale to that series where all 4 of the Horsemen are gathered together and ready to kick the Charred Council's ass.
