Character Reference Sheets: a Visual Guide to Autism - OC, DONUT STEEL!

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
Found two when I had nothing to do.

That was meant to be a Kaiju? I read the profile and it talks about wearing clothes and a collar, playing video games, car races, eating sweets and being as feminine as possible. I've never watched any Kaiju film but I'm very certain that characters don't try and act a particular gender.

Apparently that was meant to be its species according to the character bio. It might even be some sort of retarded closed species that happens to use as word heavily associated with Japanese monster movies.

Lots of furries do this to their fursonas when a lot of them clearly either never saw a kaiju film in their lives or were too busy jerking off to the monsters in said kaiju films to understand what a kaiju is supposed to be.

The images are broke but looking at the filename of the last one breaks my heart a little because I love eastern dragons.

Honestly I'd turn down a commission based on a ref like that. A ref should be straight to the point and simple. This just gives me a headache seeing the horribly clashy background, the text wall and all of the objects in the middle.

The best character reference sheets are front+back shots (side view optional or at least have a side view mugshot to show the facial build), colour swatches and some isolated part(s) for features like clothing patterns, accessories, tattoos, tails, wings, etc.

All these extra things such as likes/dislikes, personality and other details can be put in the description.
The artist doesn't need your character's life story when they're drawing a basic pic. Make a mood board if you want to show off your character's special interests.

On a side note: I've grown to dislike reading characters' profiles because their likes and dislikes are so predictable or are so bland that I don't get a feel for the character's personality. Writing full-fledged sentences about your OCs are much better. Can be TL;DR but it really helps bringing your OC to life.

Name: Kuchipatchi
Likes: Sweets, naps, friends
Dislikes: Spooky stuff, bullies, running out of snacks

But compare it to this:

This is my OC, Kuchipatchi! He likes to eat sweets whenever he gets the chance, even while in class but he eats so much, it puts him in a food coma but he doesn't mind at all. Whenever his friends are around, he likes to share his food with them and spread the joy.

Already, you can get the idea about the character. I could write better but it's only an example.
