Based on what I know of Cher from what I've heard from those who grew up with her when she was more in her prime, let's call it, she's always been a bit...loopy.
Some of it is pretty standard old-school ultra hippie liberal nonsense (i.e. those who were liberals in the 60s/70s/80s), other parts of it are related to a troubled upbringing; with such features as poverty, a struggling mother, and an alcoholic father. Nevermind the fact that she was pushed into acting as a child and we all know what the Hollywood hate machine is like (see: Shia LaBeouf's ongoing mental breakdown), the fact that she dropped out of school, and also married a man who was a decade her senior who also had his own entertainment career and political aspirations.
Do I think she's battier than a fucking belfry, given that she's like 70 and yammering on like this on Twitter? Yes, but Carrie Fisher was the same way up until her death last year (and it didn't help that she was a former coked up bipolar fiend). Hell, Cher's not even the gay icon or goddess of drag queens anymore, pretty sure Lady Gaga's stolen that pedestal out from under her.
In the end, she's just a fading star clinging to her last few glimmers of light and trying to rekindle it with a generation that wouldn't respect her even if they DID know who she was.
It's quite the sobering real life commentary on aging and relevance, really.
