‘Chill Guy’ Meme Has Been Copyrighted By The Creator

(L/A)
If you’ve been anywhere on social media in the last few days, you might have seen a new meme called ‘Chill Guy’. It has been represented by some of the biggest brands in gaming, such as Call of Duty, and parodies of it have appeared all over TikTok and Twitter.

It’s a brilliant and lighthearted meme that many are enjoying worldwide, but the creator of the character used in the meme has suddenly announced a copyright action. He stressed on social media that he’ll start issuing takedowns against certain profiles using the image ‘over the next few days’.

That’s Not Very Chill

On Twitter, @PhillipBankss shared an image of a cartoon dog in 2023. This character mulled around on social media for a while before skyrocketing as a viral meme image just days ago. For some reason, influencers and cryptocurrency brands got their hands on the image and started using it in a series of parodies to promote their products.

That’s the source of the creator’s anger, and it’s why the image has been copyrighted.

He admitted on Twitter that not everyone will feel the brunt of his takedown notices:

As the meme goes, a brand or a creator will use the image with a caption reading ‘something, something, but you’re just a chill something’. It’s tough to explain, so here’s an example from Halo:

I’m getting old and appreciate memes less and less, but this one still makes sense to me.

To give PhillipBankss credit, he revealed that his social feeds and DMs were being spammed by crypto shills and at times nefarious brands using his image to get in on the trend and traffic. That’s who he aims to target with this copyright action, and the run-of-the-mill users sharing it on social and content platforms won’t be impacted.

Let us know if you’re already tired of seeing Chill Guy on the Insider Gaming forum.

I've never seen any of these memes before but my first thought when I saw that dog in the thread here was that it looks like a brown Brian Griffon from family guy. The face is a bit different I guess but looks pretty fuckin' similar to me. Or at least close enough it's the first thing I think of. Seems a bit ironic he's getting all fuckedy with copyright shit.

Saw this meme quite a bit on Instagram and can't lie I found some of them kinda funny.

But then I saw this and it took away any and all spirit of it:

Never seen nor heard of this meme before.
To me this is very obviously what used to be called a "forced meme". They used to be very easy to spot. They lacked that certain inherent "appeal" that an organic meme does. Doge became a meme because the dog's expression is just inherently funny. Pepe and Wojak became memes because they were very good at capturing certain emotions. You look at "Chill Guy" and feel nothing. I'm not convinced actual people are using this.

Yeah, this meme feels like "Dat boi" - very forced to the point it feels like some sort of focus group testing was used to produce it. I'll at least contend that this one has some element of exploitability unlike "Dat Boi", but both are very similar in just how one note they are. The artist is probably retarded for copyrighting this, once brands determine it's inoffensive enough to use, the candle is already almost burnt out.
Hell, the crypto shitcoins could have actually given this one a second wind, Doge was probably on its way out until Dogecoin hit, and later variants were produced.

it's a new meme that's been trending on tiktok, but more specifically on twitter

Chill guy was a meme months ago lmao. Fuck maybe a year at this point? Anyways I found out about this shitshow via me trying to tell a friend I had just witnessed someone changed their icon to an incredibly fucking cursed chill guy version of their avatar. So like this creature but if it was human but still had the bootleg brian griffin proportions. Ironically the guy that did that shit to his avatar is a guy that's been pretty chill and drama free but none of that's important here. What's important is I found out the chill guy thing got copyrighted/monetized from a guy I knew that wasn't that other guy responding to me asking him if he knew about chill guy with "YES I ALREADY KNOW THE GUY THAT MADE IT BECAME A COPYRIGHT TROLL" and then I got hit with the whole explanation of the shit show that led to it. Fuck man all I wanted to do was send a horrible funny nightmare edit image someone else I kinda knew changed their pfp to and I ended up getting hit with the deep lore of the last week or so.
