CN China's third aircraft carrier, the Fujian, launched in Shanghai

China on Friday launched its third aircraft carrier, which has been named the Fujian after the country's southeastern coastal province.

The new carrier was put into water at a launch ceremony that started at about 11 a.m. at China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation's Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai.

Xu Qiliang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and vice chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), presented a naming certificate to the navy unit receiving the carrier.

Approved by the CMC, the Fujian was given the hull number 18.

The new ship, completely designed and built domestically, is the country's first aircraft carrier featuring catapults.

With a flat deck, it's equipped with an electromagnetic catapult aircraft launch system and interception facilities. Its full load displacement is over 80,000 tonnes.

The carrier will undergo mooring and sailing tests as planned.

The carrier is named after the province opposite the currently colonially occupied Chinese province of Taiwan.

Lol, what kind of idiotic nonsense is this. If you don't directly border a country, your army is irrelevant if you're navy and air force aren't winning. What, do you expect the USMC to swim to Taiwan if the navy isn't able to maintain control over the straights?
Wow. You're so right.

Without total air and sea domination there has never been ground battles unless the countries bordered each other. Never in the history of humanity has ground fighting made a difference when the sea lanes and airspace was in contention, certianly never in a place that had islands like the Pacific.

And there has never been a reason to invade a nation physically if you had air and sea superiority.

Land troops are totally obsolete.

Nobody said land troops were obsolete, dude. Just that you need sea and air control to use them across the ocean.

And you're right, naval supremacy didn't matter at all for the Pacific Campaign in WWII. Japan definitely didn't have temporary naval supremacy during the periods it was seizing US pacific territories, and naval power in the South Pacific definitely hadn't turned decisively in the US's favor by the time the island hopping campaign began in earnest.

I think we're kind of talking around each other.

You don't need it, but it sure as shit helps. It's the optimal condition.

Part of the issue will be those island fortresses. Sure, a lot of them can be pounded by aircraft and naval batteries, but they're still going to have to have boots on the ground.

You don't need the superiority, but it sure as shit helps and that's why the US has always, prior to today's military geniuses, tried to ensure it was in place before massive operations began.

They've got a few years left before their awful population structure starts making foreign military ventures completely untenable. If they're going to make any moves, it will be soon. That's all I have to say on the matter.

This is the first "positive" news from China I have heard in almost a year. Otherwise it is radio silence. What the heck is going on over there? Are they okay?? Where did all the glowing China news go?
