They're similar, but since Fighting Fantasy puts a lot more emphasis on exploration and combat, making it closer to a text adventure but with images.

I had a handful of the original books (Cave of Time, Mystery at Chimney Rock, Vampire Express) and a few D&D ones (The Dragon's Ransom, Revolt of the Dwarves)

I didn't grow up with these but I recently found about and downloaded (have yet to try) Java Fabled Lands. Seems pretty cool.

When I was a child my mother gave me her old collection of books from the 70s and 80s, many of them were from the "choose your own adventure" series. I have almost no words to describe how much I loved these books during my childhood. ❤
