On topic though, I doubt he wants to exert that kind of effort when cartoons and vidya will tell you exactly what to see.

Which is not to say that there aren't great stories in gaming! BioShock, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last of Us come to mind. Not that Chris would ever play any of those. *SIGH*

There are great cartoons, too. Batman: TAS and Avatar: The Last Airbender could teach Chris a lot about effective writing... if he watched them or cared enough to pay attention. Just another example of Chris's wasted potential.

Oh yeah, all of those are definitely examples of really strong storytelling that's more a collaborative effort between the story and the art. I'm just saying that Chris doesn't have the patience or imagination to wrap his head around really elaborate plots.

Imagining the Chandlers controlling the spice melange is a terrifying prospect.

The Autism must flow.

I'm picturing Patti as a giant sandworm(mongrel) devouring the trolls for opposing Lord Christian and the Sonichu Empire.

I think Chris actually has a hell of a lot of imagination. His problem is either that he's so enamored with his personal media (Sonic, Poke'mon, ect) that he cannot see past it to create something original or is afraid of stepping outside the box, so he copies. Maybe it's a combination of the two.

Or maybe it has to do with his developmental age. I've been coming up with stories since, gosh, the second grade or so. But a lot of the characters and settings I used for my stories started out derivative of some sort of media. I did have a few original characters and stories, but they were outnumbered by fanficy ones and it wasn't until around middle school that I really started to step away from that.

I don't. Everything he's "written" has either been his interpretation of actual events, or pretty much directly stolen from something else. The few rare things he has invented on his own make absolutely no sense to anyone but Chris himself.

The only thing Chris really stretches his imagination's legs for is how to spin an incident so that he's the victim/hero.

You are now imagining Barb floating around as Baron Harkkonen.

And Chris is dressed like this:

I'm not surprised by his failure to pick up a book without pictures, but you think that graphic novels would be right up his alley, especially since Sonichu is a comic series.
Sonichu is only a comic series because Chris can't be fucked to learn how to animate it. He wanted it to be a cartoon. :sonichu:

To be fair, animation is a lot of work even for a normal person. I don't know about flash, maybe that makes it easier, but I took an animation class in high school and it was grueling work. I loved it, but it was very difficult. I don't think there's any shame in choosing a comic book format over an animation format.

As a proffesional animator, yes, animation is hard work. But with flash he could litterally draw one picture, flap its mouth, and then have it shoot out one of his famous text walls no sweat. He could have a minute of animation done n like 15 minutes. Problem there is that he would need voice actors, and well, yeah, would anyone voice act for him? Odds are chris would do all the men, and barb would do all the women, and all the trolls would have commited suicide long ago.

But this conversation is about books, chris doesnt care about mediums you guys, he cares about brands. He read the books he read because he was a fan of RL Stine, Im sure he would have read a sonic or pokemon novel if those existed. Heck, I wouldnt be surprised by him reading a sonic the hedgehog yaoi just because its sonic.

Imagine Chris reading Dianetics. What would he take from that?
He probably wouldn't understand any of it and give up.
Not even the Scientologists would want him.

This is a good point--do we know if he ever read any of those Sonic books put out by Archie Comics?

Chris has trouble following most movies. That is what makes me think he has below average intelligence or his ego makes him functionally retarded. He will see a B slasher movie and twist it to fit his life. The more complex the plot is the more likely he'll give up on seeing how it connects to his very specific personal struggles and just zone out.

Books rely on your imagination and ability to empathize with characters so you can understand why they do what they do. Chris lacks those two things so to him it just seems like a list of people doing things at places that don't really concern him. Movies make it easier to insert himself into a story he has trouble following. He can bend the motives of characters so it can be fit into his warped view of the world. It's difficult for him to do that with books because emotions are dressed up in sentences much more complex than "Tim was mad". It's probably why he stuck with Goosebumps for so long. The books wave around motive and emotion like they were flares.

He does read them.

Of course he reads books. Rarely, but he does actually read them. He wouldn't be able to read the menus at McDonalds otherwise.
