I think it's pretty simple. He has no talent, and just assumed bringing in two people known for having watch-worthy footages would automatically result in his show also being worth watching. He doesn't know what it takes to be a host, or how to guide the flow of the show toward the desired progression, so you end up with having 3 people just sitting there, because he expects things to just happen and that he can just ride on their coat tails.

Even Maddox has more skills in the beginning. Maddox knew he couldn't manage anything live, that's why his shit were all written until his ego got to him.
