Chris Cornell an heroes - he was gay and his music sucks

I turned on MTV (yeah, I know), just in the vaguest chance they might have something, anything. They were showing -- "Friends". I don't want to live on this planet.
Ot: why do people continue to worship that old broad Jennifer Aniston? She has titties, yay. So do most women.

BEATING ON A BLONDE BITCH RUNNING FROM A BLACK GUUUUUY

I just saw the news and I was pretty shocked. I kinda expected Scott Weiland and Mike Starr would be found dead at some point. And I don't think anyone was surprised that Layne Staley died the way he did. If anything it was more surprising that he lasted that long.

But I never expected that Chris Cornell would end up committing suicide. It just never entered my mind that he would go like that. Had he overdosed I'd be less shocked since he had a pretty bad problem for a long time.

It seems like most of the big 90s bands save for Pearl Jam have had some awful tragedy befall them. Although, Pearl Jam would exist if Andrew Wood hadn't overdosed. So there's that.

Some months ago Andrew Wood's girlfriend was hassling Chris Cornell about stolen stuff. She claimed that after Andrew died Chris stole a bunch of stuff that belonged to her from the apartment, including Andrew's song books. She ranted some crazy word salad online over it about what an awful person "the mustache" as she called him was. She later apologised. I didn't hear anything about it after that. I seriously doubt it's related in any way. But it sure was bizarre to see her just appear out of nowhere with nonsensical ranting about stuff that was allegedly stolen 25 years ago. Apparently it had to do with the Temple Of The Dog reunion.

*edit*
So I've heard that the last song of the night they played was Slaves & Bulldozers. And they added part of Led Zeppelin's My Time of Dying to it.

Lyrics:
In my time of dying, I want nobody to mourn
All I want for you to do is take my body home

Well, well, well, so I can die easy
Jesus, going to make up

Jesus, going to make up my dying bed
Meet me, Jesus, meet me
Meet me in the middle of the air
If my wings should fail me, Lord
Please meet me with another pair

Well, well, well, so I can die easy
Jesus, going to make up

Somebody, somebody
Jesus going to make up
Jesus going to make you my dying bed
Well, well, well, so I can die easy
Jesus, going to make up
Somebody, somebody
Jesus going to make up
Jesus going to make you my dying bed

Oh, Saint Peter, at the gates of heaven
Won't you let me in
I never did no harm
I never did no wrong
Oh, Gabriel, let me blow your horn, let me blow your horn
Oh, I never did, did no harm
I've only been this young once
I never thought I'd do anybody no wrong
No, not once
Oh, I did somebody some good
Somebody some good
Oh, did somebody some good
I must have did somebody some good
Oh, I believe I did
I see the smiling faces
I know I must have left some traces
And I see them in the streets
And I see them in the field
And I hear them shouting under my feet
And I know it's got to be real
Oh, Lord, deliver me
All the wrong I've done
You can deliver me, Lord
I only wanted to have some fun
Hear the angels marching, hear them marching, hear them marching
Hear them marching, the' marching

Oh my Jesus, oh my Jesus, oh my Jesus
Oh my Jesus, oh my Jesus
It's pretty good up here
Oh Georgina, oh Georgina, oh Georgina, oh Georgina
Oh I'll see you again
Oh, don't you make it my dying, dying, dying

Cough!
That's gotta be the one, ain't it?
Come have a listen, then
Oh yes, thank you

Kind of eerie.

I liked his cover of Johnny Cash's "Rusty Cage", but that's about it.

Wellp, Rip in Pieces, and congratulations to whoever had money on him in whatever celebrity deadpool they've invested in.

Is there anyone from that scene still alive? I'm hesitant to call it grunge, given that Soundgarden was more like prog-Zep, Pearl Jam was very classic rock-y, Alice in Chains was doom metal with some acoustic stuff, and Stone Temple Pilots became closer to psych rock than straight grunge. I guess some of the smaller guys like Mudhoney, but still, Chris Cornell was the last guy I would've expected to off himself.

Now all that's left is to wait for Soundgarden to turn into Scabgarden. I wouldn't be surprised if it happened after an acceptable amount of time has passed. At least Matt Cameron still has a job and Hall of Fame status in Pearl Jam. Not bad for the kid that sang Puberty Love in Attack Of the Killer Tomatoes.

I always found it strange that despite the 80s hair metal scene being known for excessive partying and drug use, save for a few bad cases like Kevin Dubrow and Jani Lane, many of those guys are still alive. No one from Motley Crue or Guns n Roses bit the dust. And those guys partied hard. Yet the grunge scene is paved with deaths from overdoses and suicide.

It's really the singers who keep offing themselves, the rest of the band usually sticks around. I'm sure the Soundgarden will either retire or go dark for a few years to process Cornell's death and then come back with a new singer a la Alice in Chains. Regarding your first question, Eddie Vedder is probably the last major frontman from those days still around. Someone needs to give that dude a helmet or something.

80's hair metal didn't have crippling depression and nihilism as core components of the scene. There's a reason that, with the exception of Scott Weiland, all the deaths were either suicide or singers dying after becoming heroin recluses for a few years.

I'd really consider Soundgarden, especially early Soundgarden, to be more akin to technically sophisticated metal. It never really had that mushy, jangly sound of Nirvana that was more typical of grunge. I never thought much of STP, who just seemed like all they ever did was try to sound like whatever was popular at the moment.

Clean and healthy living? Fuck that noise, do hard drugs and fuck groupies, you'll live forever.
