This question occurred to me when I saw the infamous Lapse GIF on the main Chris article. I noticed how much greasier he looks as an adult, whereas as a child he appears to be somewhat more normal.

Was Chris' diet as a child a bit more varied and not just McDonalds/Burger King/whatever? Did he only start eating it every day when he reached adulthood? Does anyone even know?

I think he ate better when, you know, Barb gave a shit.
Barb got lazy as she got older. Chris never had any real responsibilities so he never thought to take over the food stuff. That's why I think the McDonalds thing is pretty recent. Up until high school I think Chris ate like a normal person.

I guess you're right.

The Barb cooking era ended with the Spaghetti Incident, am I right?

It's a shame; Chris would feel so much better if he ate well.

but yeah, what else did Barb cook before the spaghetti incident besides spaghetti?

I seem to recall that Chris lived with Bob for most of the week during the era immediately after the Greene County incident, and I suspect that Bob was a bit better about making sure that Chris got his greens.

By the time high school was rolling around, Chris was already developing an unhealthy pallor and a layer of grease, indicating that his diet was becoming increasingly fast-food based around that time.

It seems like all cooking ceased when Bob & Chris were moving back to Ruckersville after Chris graduated. I'm sure Bob made Chris eat "old man food" when they lived together, whatever old man food is, you guys know, food our grandparents would've eaten.

It's also worth noting that Barb threw a tantrum over Bob and Chris not wanting spaghetti and presumably didn't cook for them after that. If it's true that she essentially stopped cooking over a fucking stupid grudge, then she essentially condoned Bob's heart disease getting worse and Chris gaining more weight over her little hurt feelings from one spaghetti dinner.

Might it just be hormones and lack of bathing? Chris was still pretty skinny in high school, so I don't think his greasiness was due to diet.

I'm going to have to disagree with you there. If, assuming Chris ate better when he lived with Bob, we could assume that Bob had the ability to prepare meals for them when Barb threw her tantrum. Especially if he was retired.

Unless, of course, all of Chris's nutrition came from school prepared meals and he and Bob ate frozen dinners and take out all the time.

Perhaps. He really ballooned right after high school, though, so I suspect that his diet wasn't that great to begin with.

Wow, I did not know that.

I don't know if his skinniness at the time is a perfect indicator of diet; considering the colossal amount of fatty crap that Chris eats every day, he's not as obese as you'd expect. That seems to indicate a high metabolism, which is almost certainly starting to break down now, but might have kept his waist fairly trim back when he was younger.

Keep in mind that Bob was old-school Southern and probably only cooked when he and Chris were "baching" it. I would guess that if Barb was around, he'd assume she was going to cook.

That's a really good point. I hadn't considered that. If he was cooking for them, he probably would hang up the apron as soon as Barb was around. Such a shame, cooking is a lot of fun and it would have helped all their health to get something fresh and unprocessed.

when you're in school half of your waking day, you have to walk from class to class, and you can't just raid a fridge whenever you're bored. And if you're eating school prepared lunches, they have to be marginally nutritious.

Once you're out, you can sit in your room like a lump and stuff your face full of whatever shit you feel like, whenever the mood strikes you. Which is obviously what Chris has been doing steadily since he left high-school.

From the Jackie Emails 24:

Chris said:
I have actually shared how I felt with mom recently, and she listened. She also let off a few monkies off her back; speghetti dinner that was refused by dad and me the night of our final move back to Ruckersville. I couldn't help it if I did not feel like spaghetti that night; she gave up cooking for us after that for one.
