Political correctness taken to its logical conclusion.
This is not a surprise. The Shakers practice celibacy, in addition to pacifism, equality of the sexes and communal ownership of property.

As its members didn’t have children, the sect grew both by converting adults and by raising orphaned children and, when they reached the age of 18, giving them the option to remain a member of the sect or to leave the community.

Though it might sound like an old-fashioned religious sect by today’s standards, at one time the Shakers were considered progressive. As PBS noted, “Seventy-five years before the emancipation of the slaves and one hundred fifty years before women began voting in America, the Shakers were practicing social, sexual, economic, and spiritual equality for all members.”

In their Southern communities, members freed all of their slaves in 1817 and began buying other black believers out of slavery, PBS reported.

The Shakers are a 250+ year old sect of Christianity and are a breakaway from the Quakers of New England. Apparently, they don't believe in sex. And so to replenish their ranks, they would attempt to recruit new members into their sect. Now there are only 2 left.
This is what happens when you don't follow the natural order of things! How in the world do you think we get here?

It's like convents/abbeys for protestants. Except all other protestants are a-okay with sex if you get married, and it's not the olden days of Catholicism, when nobles dumped extra sons/unmarriagable daughters in the priesthood/sisterhood. It was an idea that was too late when it started.

About the only thing the major world religions have in common is encouraging their adherents to reproduce and infect their offspring with their ideology. It is of great benefit to the memes.

Shakers took it to the opposite extreme and whoops, they're all dead now. Someone was doing it wrong and the genes of those who were attracted by that particular ideology are gone.

They seem harmless. Hell, even like a nice group. They took in the unwanted, and gave them homes and a life. And when they came of age, they gave them the option to leave if they wanted to, even, so it's not like it was even kidnapping.

But, the natural order dictated from the moment these people broke off from the Quakers that their sect was living on borrowed time.

Hats off to them surviving as long as they did
