No really, if Chris was on the other end of bobs belt, he may be a bit better behaved.

i'm not denying that it works. i'm just saying it's a shit method and "slapping your kids til they get it" is about the worst thing for an autistic kid

If Bob had the energy for it, would you say the same thing if this occurred in 2006?

Can you imagine Bob trying to pull typical parent discipline in Chris. "Chris im taking your toys for a week" 8 hours later he keels over putting all of Chris' toys away. Or if they were computer literate. Or if they actually cut down the internet.

I wouldn't put keystering a game boy advance above Chris

Well, Christian did have enough real estate there to fit half a Sonichu medallion.

A smart person would go with a Game Boy Advance Micro. Knowing Christian though, he'd try to fit an Original or SP, and he'd walk around with a little rectangular protrusion like it was nothing.

Dude...why you are so insistent on trying to confirm your view on this? It's supposed to work the other way around.

You people seem to think

Chris is absolutely incapable of taking the first step of accepting real help. People should stop pretending he can. Someone has to take authority to force him to accept real help.

I think what's happening here is, that some people don't like the implications of this idea. It makes Chris a bit too disabled, too retarded. Laughing at someone like that might be a bit too uncomfortable for some.

Well, I think if his psych eval or court proceedings said that he was mentally retarded we wouldn't have a forum with hundreds of members making fun of him. The reason why :briefs: and  and :tomgirl: are funny, as opposed to just sad, is because he isn't retarded.

I mean, if Bob had the energy to put Chris on the other end of his belt in 2006 (and nip all that dumb shit in the bud), would you say corporal punishment is the worst thing for him (because we know Chris is a damn kid no matter the age).

Look man, I think there's a point here that you -- to be fair, not just you -- are missing. I have a learning disability called dyscalculia, which is potatoes compared to how different the autistic brain is, but the part of my brain responsible for arithmetic and simple algebra just does not work like yours does. Here I sit with a master's degree, on the first day of the year, and if you asked me what the date would be one week from today, I would have to think about it. Later in the month I might wind up counting on my fingers, or using a calculator, and I might still get a wrong answer.

This is hard-"wired" (I hate the metaphor of brain wiring because it grossly oversimplifies things, but it's the one at hand). You could slap me for a week and it would not make me do long division, or apply the transitive property to some equation, any faster or better. In eighth-grade algebra in particular, I was pouring all of my mental energy into it, and my mother thought I was deliberately giving wrong answers to frustrate her. Holy hell. I would have given up state secrets if I'd had them just to get her the fuck off my back about it. I was trying. I was trying to do it right. I just wasn't believed about having a bona fide learning disability.

Now, in Chris's case, the different "wiring" comes from a toxic combo of nurture, endlessly discussed here, and nature. Beating him would have done nothing to stop his insistence on communicating with his perceived fandase; his peculiar use of language while doing so; or, for that matter, the sensory defensiveness that led him to augment his :medallion: necklace with a Wilson wrist warmer at the back. Some of his difficulty is acquired, but he has numerous innate problems with cognition and social interaction that made him not understand, for example, the unfortunate effect of the Attraction Sign, or that putting Mary Poppins in a dating profile would be seen as weird. Some people, through no fault of their own, do not immediately pick up on this shit like a baby bird learning to fly, and no amount of corporal punishment would speed up their understanding, in the same way that mascara won't unclog your drain. It just doesn't work like that.

To play a bit of devil's advocate: dyscalculia seems purely cognitive, and while autism is cognitive as well, it's the repeated bad behaviors that result from that cognition that may be more amenable to change through beatings (I can't believe I'm writing this...anyway...). Like, you can't be punished into doing math correctly, but Chris could be punished into stopping doing a particular thing that's bad, such as drawing on store merchandise. He's already been punished to a degree where it seems like he'll stay away from the Game PLace due to fear of the consequences, even though he still feels like he deserves to go there.

Hitting him wouldnt be as effective as following through with punishments would. The problem is that Bob and barb were too old/lazy to follow through. I mean what if they cut down the internet in 2006? Or Took away his PS eye which lead to all the videos. Half the time it wasn't even that they were lazy, it was Chris would effectively convince his parents that he wasn't wrong and they'd believe cause they didn't see him as being capable of having flaws and didn't understand how the internet works. Plenty of parents today discover their kids acting like idiots on the internet. They tend to nip it in the bud and make sure the kid knows that they're not to misbehave on the internet that they aren't paying for.

We should remember that Chris was 23-years-old in 2006.

I always thought that CHris was probably hit/spanked at a younger age, which explains his tard rage :x

Most psychologists place the end of adolescence at 26. Chris being significantly delayed of course.

now there is something of an understatement...

Are we forgetting his roller skating experience? He fell and rationalized "this hurts I hate it and never want to do it again". He most definitely responds better to physical pain than simply admonishing him. But to punish him in a worthwhile way as in spanking or belt would require borb actually caring enough about their son to not be a huge screw up.

Well, you're a "youth" generally between the ages of 15 and 25, but an adolescent generally between 13 and 19.

Well he had his face rubbed on the carpet by teachers when he was a child, causing him to cry blood, but that was in response to a tard rage, so I dunno, chicken and egg, man.

Heh, you bring the milk, and he'll bring ---- You know what? Nevermind.

Don't forget he stopped the attraction sign after Barb told him it made him look retarded! If she had followed through with that and explained, very carefully, why it made him look retarded, other options, what it suggests about him and how people don't want to date someone that acts like that - which, of course, Barb would never do/have done, but work with me here - then odds are he would have stopped the attraction sign and perhaps have actually started talking to women or w/e. If he had simply been beaten by Borb when they realized he had the attraction sign, he still would have stopped, but not really known why.
