Men like Hitchens and Jonathan Bowden were some of the best figures to come from Britain in recent times and both went far too early. It's just tragic to see what we are left with in their wake.
 
Free Speech is self defeating, you end up protecting people who want you in jail for saying what they don't want you to say.
You give them the right to constantly use free speech to attack you and all it takes is one crack for laws ending free speech and putting you behind bars.

left wing: You're being sent to the gulags for express free speech extremist sentiment

This is a common problem with tolerant societies. Like how progressive countries are effectively enacting blasphemy laws to appease people who come from places where drawing the holy prophet gets your head lopped off.

We've allowed a shit procedent to be established and now look at where we are, we've gave corpo assholes a way to censor people off the internet without anyone else batting an eye to it

There's a plethora of liberals who want people in prison for not using the right pronoun or saying that children can't consent to hormone therapy.

This has been going on for a while. Remember SOPA, or whatever it was, a law that would've let corporations ban people from the internet to "stop child pornography" Everyone on the internet opposed it and nearly every website had a message to encourage their readers to stop it.
What we're seeing now is just SOPA, but targeted against people who might use the internet to say the n-word. Of all the people who were openly against SOPA, only a fraction of them will be against what we're seeing to today, and most of them are huge advocates.
People drop the idea of free speech like a rock once they see it as a threat, and to most people the n-word is more threatening than child pornography.

i dont give a shit about either side, and infact i've found myself against the right's constant deplatformation. but sure lets keep a constant cycle of one side supressing and demonizing the other until GOP's change, or we murder each other

Cant even tell what you're getting at with this one, maybe i mispoke with the GOP thing, since i usually just interpret that with whichever party is in power at the time. but no, im not talking solely about the republicans. both parties are shite and constantly pit us against each other so they can hack away at our freedoms

That while it's important to remember that the right can be threaten free speech, they aren't currently nor have they to the degree of deplatforming Alex Jones or the President.
Stroking yourself off for the realization that they both have shitty aspects is tired and gay, especially when the above is happening and continues to happen.

probably because back then we didnt have most social networks and the government didnt take what online capabilities we had too seriously.
what my entire point has been and has always been, if you want free speech you cant just arbitrarily decide the other side doesnt deserve it, because you set precedence for it to eventually be used against yourself in the future
 
Um excuse me I know for a fact that we could be living in utopia right now if only we imprisoned white men for being racist and colonialists.

Ancient Blood Feuds are the only way forward. Free Speech was made by a white man therefore it's a tool of oppression because of the race who made it.

Ok but it's happening right now, and only getting worse. Acting smug because fundies freaked out about metal is annoying and unhelpful.
 
Both sides push their "free speech" narrative entirely which is why pushing "free speech" feels so tiresome in 2021.

A lot of people on the left push it for "don't be an asshole and respect trans people whatever", and a lot of people on the right push it for "my favorite conspiracy theorist shouldn't be banned from YouTube" and get really autistic when someone criticizes their ideal on the matter. Free speech is really subjective after social media came around, and nobody can agree on what the fuck it is which is why I don't bother for my own sake.
