Disaster City Council Calls on Durham to “Resist Bigotry” Ahead of Jordan Peterson Event - This Shit Is Why Trump Won

Speaker Jordan B. Peterson, called out by the Durham City Council for "racist, misogynist, and transphobic" views, has responded to the controversy over his upcoming show at the Durham Performing Arts Center.

Over the weekend, the Canadian professor whose YouTube lectures and self-help book have a large following, accused the elected leaders of claiming "moral superiority" in a statement signed by the mayor and council and shared on Mayor Pro Tem Jillian Johnson's public Facebook page.

Peterson, a clinical psychologist, responded on his website in a post titled "Durham City Council Purchases Unearned Virtue with the Currency of Denouncement."

His statement led with the names and email addresses of the council members, unleashing a flood of angry emails to them over the weekend. Dozens of writers said that the council's statement misrepresented his beliefs. Some called it "disgraceful" and disgusting."

Many of those emailing council members listed their locations as Canada and the United Kingdom, though several were also local.

In Peterson's response, he wrote that the "City of Durham’s statement is one of the purest demonstrations I have yet seen of the tendency for the ideologically possessed to use denouncement tactically as a means to amplify and exaggerate personal or identity-group virtue. To lay this bare, I have composed this analysis of the psychological motivations and narrative structure of the statement."

Peterson is scheduled to bring his "12 Rules for Life Tour" to DPAC on Sept. 10.

His lengthy response addresses each paragraph of the council's statement. At one point he calls part of it "a conceptually brutal mishmash of self-righteousness, indignation and utter moral and political confusion."

The council statement says, in part: "We would like to be clear that we respect Mr. Peterson’s right to hold his opinions and to freely state his opinions without government interference. However, we wish to emphasize that a person’s right to free speech does not include the right to a platform or an audience. As many in our community have been disturbed and angered by Mr. Peterson’s racist, misogynist, and transphobic views, we would like to use this opportunity to reiterate our commitments and values to all of you as your elected representatives."

Peterson's response quotes much more of the council statement, which he thinks aims to "avoid responsibility and point a finger of blame at erstwhile colleagues" at DPAC and "to denounce me and my hypothetical audience (and claim moral superiority)."

He also said their statement is electioneering.

"Everything that is reprehensible about the radical and ideologically-possessed left – all the moral self-righteousness, the platitudes, the clichés, the mindless celebration of diversity for the sake of the demonstration of tolerance, the naivete, and the appalling malevolence of casual denunciation – is on painful display in this missive," Peterson wrote. "Exposure to such a piece of writing left me with a strong desire for a hot shower accompanied by plenty of soap and a scrub brush."

Peterson also counters the council members saying they found out Peterson was "invited" to DPAC by reading Indy Week. He rented out the theater, he said.

Peterson also invited the Durham City Council members to attend his lecture at DPAC in an email Monday night.

In an email exchange between City Council member Mark-Anthony Middleton and Peterson on Tuesday, Middleton said he apologized to DPAC and Peterson for the statement's claim that DPAC invited Peterson rather than Peterson renting out the venue. Middleton also told Peterson that if his schedule permits, he would attend Peterson's event on Sept. 10.

He's been called 'racist, misogynist, and transphobic.' Should he speak at DPAC?

Peterson asked Middleton if he could tweet it and that it would "defuse some of the tension."

"Absolutely," Middleton wrote. "My assumption since taking office is that every utterance I make is potentially 'tweetable.'"

Peterson and DPAC have not responded to requests for comment.

Jordan Peterson, a clinical psychologist turned anti-political correctness crusader, has responded to a statement from the Durham City Council about his upcoming appearance at the Durham Performing Arts Center.

The council's statement was shared Friday on the official Facebook page of Mayor Pro Tem Jillian Johnson and is signed by the entire council and Mayor Steve Schewel. In it, council members declare Durham "a place for all of us" and say that Bull City residents have been "disturbed and angered by Mr. Peterson’s racist, misogynist, and transphobic views." (You can read more about those views here and here).

"Those who seek to exclude or deny the humanity of others will find no comfort here," they write.

In a blog post titled "Durham City Council Purchases Unearned Virtue with the Currency of Denouncement," Peterson writes that the council's statement is "not written merely to denounce me. No: it’s written to denounce everyone who has the temerity to buy a ticket to this event. If my views are 'racist, misogynistic and transphobic' then clearly everyone who wants to hear me express them is deplorable in the same manner."

The post has set off dozens of angry emails to the city council members, whose email addresses were included at the start of Peterson's post.

"Everything that is reprehensible about the radical and ideologically-possessed left – all the moral self-righteousness, the platitudes, the clichés, the mindless celebration of diversity for the sake of the demonstration of tolerance, the naivete, and the appalling malevolence of casual denunciation – is on painful display in this missive. Exposure to such a piece of writing left me with a strong desire for a hot shower accompanied by plenty of soap and a scrub brush," he says.

Peterson also states that he was not invited to DPAC, as the statement begins, but rather rented the theater (DPAC and one of its two management companies, PFM, didn't respond to messages left by the INDY. The other, Nederlander, referred questions to DPAC) and says the statement should have referred to him as Dr. Peterson, not Mr.

Many of the angry emails council members have received cite these two bits of information. Others link to Peterson's post and accuse council members of accepting a mainstream media narrative vilifying Peterson, rather than looking at his work first-hand.

While some are local, several of the writers say they are from Canada and England, and appear to think the statement was made by elected officials in places called Durham in those countries.

So the Durham City Council (which is run by one of the ugliest humans I've ever seen) decided to put out a statement on an upcoming event Canadian Professor, and all around badass, Jordan Peterson is running out of their city. It should be noted that DPAC did not invite Dr. Peterson, he rented the space on his own.

Full statement:

We recently learned from coverage in the Indyweek that the Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC) has invited Jordan Peterson to speak in the venue this September. Though the DPAC is owned by the City of Durham, the theater’s management companies, Nederlander & PFM, are entirely responsible for the choice of shows and performers who appear at the venue. We would like to be clear that we respect Mr. Peterson’s right to hold his opinions and to freely state his opinions without government interference. However, we wish to emphasize that a person’s right to free speech does not include the right to a platform or an audience. As many in our community have been disturbed and angered by Mr. Peterson’s racist, misogynist, and transphobic views, we would like to use this opportunity to reiterate our commitments and values to all of you as your elected representatives.

We believe that Durham is a place for all of us - black, white, Asian, Latinx, indigenous, and mixed-race, trans and cis, gay and lesbian, queer, and straight, disabled and able-bodied, young and elderly, women, men, and non-binary, native and immigrant, secular and people of faith. Those who seek to exclude or deny the humanity of others will find no comfort here.

We believe that everyone in our city should have the opportunity to thrive in an equitable and inclusive community. We understand that this opportunity has been intentionally and unjustly denied to many of our residents on the basis of race, class, gender, and other aspects of their identities. We are committed to taking action to remedy these injustices.

We honor single parents, non-nuclear families, gay, lesbian, and queer families, and chosen families who are building lives full of love and support for each other and for the children in our community. We believe that all types of families raise healthy children who are prepared to succeed and make a positive contribution to the world.

We believe that men and women are equally competent leaders and thinkers and that women should be in leadership roles in our community. We believe that violence against women is horrific and unacceptable under any circumstances. Women do not owe anyone access to or any level of control over their bodies or sexuality. We honor trans and non-binary residents and believe that respecting each other requires a commitment to using the names and pronouns that each of us identifies with. We will do all that we can to ensure that trans and non-binary people feel safe and respected in our community.

We invite the Durham community to recommit ourselves to these values as a city and a community and to reject and resist bigotry wherever we encounter it.

Sincerely,
Steve Schewel, Mayor
Jillian Johnson, Mayor Pro Tempore
Vernetta Alston, City Council Member, Ward 3
Javiera Caballero, City Council Member At-Large
DeDreana Freeman, City Council Member, Ward 1
Mark-Anthony Middleton, City Council Member, Ward 2
Charlie Reece, City Council Member At-Large

This is some anti-Free Speech virtue signaling on a delusions of grandeur kick. To quote my favorite comic book artist, I hope they fire this lady out of a trebuchet into space.

What's this wash your dick thing? It's hilarious and I can definitely see Peterson having to explain that to a sped, but where did it come from specifically?

I've never heard him say it, and I've listened to good many of his talks. I think it's just a logical extension of the idea that all Peterson does is tell people (and mostly men) to stop being lazy and to take basic care of themselves. That's an oversimplification of what Peterson does, but that's the meme.

Durham may be a lol cow but NC still has the best BBQ sauce.

fite me.

Texas barbecue sauce is superior. It has much less vinegar and slightly more sugar than Carolina sauce, so the meat is not drowned in vinegar

That's exactly why NC sauce is better smh

All y'all are idjits, Memphis BBQ best BBQ.

What I find amusing is that really every time they do this, all they accomplish is more people drawing attention to it. How many would have known without this "I'M SO #WOKE" stuff that Peterson was going to Durham? Probably much less than the amount that knows now.

The left really is it's own worst enemy.

They’re too stupid to figure that part out. The less attention you give someone like Peterson, the less crowds he’ll have. You’ll always have the curious bunch wondering if what’s being said is true, and they may end up as fans. I hadn’t heard about Peterson’s visit until these geniuses made a fuss over it.

Not only that, the more they insist that whoever it is they're against is a Nazi/racist/sexist/whateverthefuckist, the more the curious people would want to confirm if there's any truth to what they're saying about them. More often than not, that in turn leads to these curious people realizing "hey, this guy isn't the nearly the monster these people are making him out to be" and then loose even more trust in these hysterical loudmouths.

Peterson and all these others would never have had even a fraction of the recognition and audience they have now if the breath of these pearl-clutcher's screeching didn't constantly breathe new life into them
