Started this recently, just finished Act 1 last night.

I've looked at some build recommendations that seem to suggest going all-in on two stats per character, but I'm not sure if those are from old patches, as I know that some stuff like virtuoso stance got toned way down. Is hyper-focusing on stat allocation still the order of the day?

Stats pretty much don’t matter until you get to the really hard end game boss fights. You have the recoat items to always be able to readjust your stats also. Basically allocate stats based on whatever weapon you have equipped. The letter grades next to those stats indicate how well you scale with those stats.

In general though, agility is the best stat in the game.

Is the defense stat meaningful at all?

At least at the point I'm at, putting points into scaling stats provides a little increase in damage, but not nearly as much as might.

Defense is only good if you are complete dogshit at dodging or parrying. Objectively the worst stat since the game has a built in mechanism for you to take zero damage if you aren’t bad. The only way I could see defense ever being worth it is if you crafted some build built around actually face tanking damage and not dodging or parrying.
There a soft cap or?
I really don't want to waste points.
i am not sure if there is some sort of soft cap on speed or not, but its just the objective best stat for this sort of game. More speed means your characters get more turns compared to the enemy. Don’t worry about wasting points. The recoat item you find allows you to respec your stats and recoats are very abundant by the late game.

Are there even enough frog created RPGs in a decade to warrant the term FRPG being a thing? This is the first nigger worshipper french RPG anything I've ever heard of in my life.
A tenuous connection, but Disco Elysium had a lot of French naming, characters, and poetic license references to post-revolution France.

Defense helps, to some extent, as a safety net when you fumble a dodge/parry. But it's not a very important stat, because the game isn't designed around you taking blows to the face constantly.

That is because your weapons are still low level.
As you upgraded your weapons, they increase in damage and also get better scaling.
High end weapons usually have S scaling on main attribute, and that's when your investment pays off.
Well, don't worry, you will get enough re-spec items that you should be able to adjust your attributes often.

No.
All attributes (might, agility etc) go to 99 and are used mainly to scale weapon damage.
Your stats (crit, speed etc) will mostly be taken from pictos.

In general though, agility is the best stat in the game
This is true, but only because Speed is the most important stat.
Speed dictates how early and how often you get a turn, and as you can imagine, action economy is king.

For all the newcomers to this game, I would recommend you invest 2 points in Vitality and 1 point in Agility every time you level up, at least in Act 1, until you get the hang of the game. That extra HP will help.
Also, spread your pictos around, and give everyone decent Speed ones.
Later on, when you understand the mechanics better and have more tools available, feel free to adjust however you want, but I would still recommend this spread Vitality+Agility+Main weapon scaling (weapon scale with 2 attributes, invest in those, priority being the highest one)

I’m near the end of my first run of the game and having good defense on Maelle saved me many times from total defeat on some enemies and bosses that had unexpected attack patterns.

Finally played through this game, a bit late to the party.

Got a bit annoying story wise, in my point of view, since they hammered it in that it was about a family that got addicted to fictional worlds inside paintings (hmmm, wonder where they took that inspiration from).

And anyone that took Maelles ending is probably deep into an addiction or are enablers themselves.

The story in E33 reminds me a lot of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. I won't go into detail for the sake of spoilers by proxy, if you know, you know.

I agree with you on the Maelle ending, but I like that it sets up a bit for a sequel. I wish the game would have delved more into the relationship between the Painters and the Writers. There's a few bits of E33 that would have benefitted from a slightly longer playtime, but on the other hand, not being a 100 hour game is a strong selling point for people who don't want to spend 90% of their playthrough reading text boxes.

My reaction to E33 initially that I was a centrist on it, because I thought the game seemed decent enough, but the hype was overdone. Now I am mildly miffed at the proponents who want to gas up E33 like there were no great RPGs before it vs. my increasing irritation at the newer batches of detractors saying dumb shit like how the game is "spiritually Israeli" or how an indie game is a industry plant because none of the female characters look like Rocky Dennis with a Megan Rapinoe haircut and tits or like they 3-D scanned Leslie Jones.

I find both groups of people really annoying. There seems to be this behavior where a person feels compelled to cast down the old idols in order to lift up the new ones and and it's pervasive throughout all forms of entertainment. While I don't consider myself to be connoisseur of JRPGs, I have played enough to see the influence that some of the really great older ones had on E33 and the game is better for it.

nothing is allowed to be decent anymore
it is either the second coming of christ or literally satan

Only in the endgame. The stat scaling on weapons isn't much until you get to the B-A-S range. So spread your stats until you find your favorite endgame weapon, then respec fully into the scaling. That's when you're going to have 99 in two stats and then everything else. There's a ton of respec items in the game, so feel free to respec whenever if it feels like you fucked up somewhere.

I think part of the hype is intended as a rebuke to industry players, to show that there is a demand for single-player narrative games that can be made on modest budgets (and sold at reasonable prices) as long as you have good visual design, writing, and gameplay, rather than an endless stream of me-too live service shooters that disrespect players' time, cost hundreds of millions to make, and likely will fail spectacularly, dragging the studio down with them. In a healthy industry, it would be an extremely promising debut title for a new studio with a bright future ahead of them. In the industry as it exists, it's an oasis in the desert.

Man, builds are starting to pick up. This chromatic faggot had no idea what was about to happen.

I laughed when I saw the skill name because of this
but at least it's appropriate here

Lune was nothing but a heal slut until I got the second earth power. Now she's the main break damage dealer of the party.

If you build Lune with Earth and Lightning skills, she can deal insane damage.
There's also an item for her, that gives two stains if she has none, and you can make some crazy combos with that.

i almost killed the frozen fuck three times
three goddamn times
and his aoes took down my party at the very last stretch every time

i would bash my head against the wall of its wackass physiognamy, but i' prefer to retain what sanity i have left

I genuinely loved it and my only feelings regarding The Game Awards is that I did want it to sweep just so it can shut down the other games that were all faggot shit (Can't speak for DK)

Seeing Kojima get salty as fuck and walk out made it all worth it.

I've been on a chromatic binge purely because of circumstance really. I wanted to explore and there's a fucker behind every corner.

On another note, I finally offed that goddamn giant frozen faggot. My god. I got TPK'd before I could kill it again. That just sent me into a rage, so I used some Lumina on Verso to get a few nifty extra abilities to send that bitch to hell. Unfortunately, Monoco wasn't in my team so I don't know if it was supposed to drop a skill or not. I'm not going to fucking do that shit again though. Fuck that. My fucking god. Even the bouncing goddamn exploding head that does nothing more than waste your time and patience is better than this piece of shit.
