This is actually something the Soviets complained about Americans in the Cold War about. They'd stolen our military manuals and knew exactly the playbook we supposedly operated by.

There's a true story, told hungover but the gist is:
Red Army battalion, like 3000 men, get their orders to go and attack an enemy city during WWII. To get there on their map they will have to cross a tiny stream of water, and then attack the city. They get there and the drunk Igor fuck who got their map made a fucking mistake and it turns out to be a huge river, much deeper and impossible to walk through. Gonna have to swim, but everyone is wearing like 40 pounds+ of gear.
Battalion commander calls HQ and says 'Can't cross the river, ask Moscow if we can diverge from plan we see a bridge a few miles down the road', guy says 'Niyet, follow orders' and the guy says 'Tovarich, we can't cross it we have to find another way' and the radio operator asks him 'You want me to call Moscow and tell them you are refusing to follow orders?' '.... nyet'. 'Ok so make them cross and take the town. Spasiba, pidor'
Commander calls back an hour later, asks for reinforcement he has only
3 men left. Guy asks him the fuck happened, 'We crossed the river, they all sank to the bottom and drowned one after the other'. Guy says 'then why tf didn't you go and use the bridge then' and the battalion commander told ' And what, tell Moscow I was disobeying orders?'
