Apparently based on the article, it seemed that CNN was gonna publish his personal information online if he didn't. Even if he might not have been the one who did it, there are certain people who aren't gonna care about that until it's too late when they get a hold of stuff like his job location or his home address.

Ok maybe I should have phrased it more like "Why did the guy take responsibility for something he didn't actually make?"

I understand he apologised due to blackmail but he would've known his version was different to the one trump posted. It's odd he didn't mention that at all.

Exactly what in the public interest is there in releasing the identity of a guy who mistakenly claimed to make a gif that the President posted on twitter?

Also after Trump tweeted the meme he straight up claimed it originated with him on the_Donald, and while he got push back about it when he did, cnn didn't bother read it I guess, so they went with it and contacted him. At which point he decided to live up to his name and go full tardy.
