Anyone have a recommendation for a rye in cocktails? I decided to start making some manhattans and find that I don’t really like Wild Turkey’s rye anywhere near as much as their bourbons. I also wish there were bars that serve Last Words. I know ordering cocktails at a bar is always overpriced, but the only store near me that seems to stock Chartreuse has around 60 dollars.

I prefer regular bourbon over ryes for my manhattans. Knob Creek or Makers Mark. Rye seems to harsh.

I was thinking of splitting the difference and using Bulliet, but the places near me had that a bit higher than I’d like too. Is Dolin’s red a suitable enough vermouth?

I just get Martini Rossi sweet for $8.99 at the grocery store. Or Gallo. Just have a light hand with it. I generally go 2 shots bourbon, 1/2 shot vermouth. Easiest way to fuck it up is too much vermouth. Bitters is also important, you only add like two shakes, but without it it’s not right.

Anyone got some rum cocktails they like? Daiquiris seem to be a hit at my friends’ poker game. I also need to get some stemware.

My go-to cocktail to the chagrin of my coworkers is the Reservoir Dog. Pour two shots of Jaegermeister & two shots of Baileys in a glass over ice and stir. I love it every drop of it.

Can't go wrong with a Cuba Libre; rum, coke and lime. My uncle always enjoyed Bacardi and diet Coke, but whenever I get to see him, he always asks me to make it for him.

I've a newfound love for the French 75. It has a really nice balance and complexity for a sweet-and-fresh type of drink. Just made one with a honey-based simple syrup that tasted amazing. Next time I think I want to experiment with some muddled mint leaves or a dash of bitters.

With dark rum: Rub a long piece of lemon or lime peel against the inside of a glass, then add dark rum and some Fentiman's Curiosity Cola!

Dark n stormy is my favorite. I also like to make mulled wine spiked with dark rum but it's more of a fall/winter drink.
If you’re going to spike mulled wine why not just make a full on punch?
I like this recipe and sub out the peach brandy for applejack.
Also, think I like Cocchi di Turino for my manhattans over the trendy option of Antica Formula. I think I’m just not overly fond of vanilla which is the main flavor in that vermouth.

A red eye is perfect for this heat. Beer and tomato juice are a great combination.

tonight I made for myself a Pegu Club cocktail as it is one of my preferred simple gin cocktails.
1.5 oz gin
3/4 oz Ferrand dry Curacao
3/4 oz lime juice (fresh)
2 dashes Angostura

unfortunately the lime I juiced turned out to be so incredibly tart that it just ruined the cocktail, the other flavors are completely gone, all I got is sour lime.
I still drank it, waste not want not and all that, but still... I need to not cheap out on limes again as I LOVE gin and gin cocktails and having limes that are too tart is just ruinous to the booze.

Try scaling the gin up to 2oz, or using one that’s higher proof like Tanq or Broker’s.
Do you have a recommended martinez spec by chance? Baring that have you used anything besides london dry gin and what would you say Plymouth works best with if so?

The Pegu is a fine established recipe, upping the gin content of proof isn't really an issue and personally I find those gins to be flat, the 2 London dry's I consistently keep in my cabinet are Boodles and Citadelle as I find them to be deliciously herbalicious. That sounds pretentious as all hell...
As far as a Martinez... that's not a cocktail I'll make at home by the fact I'm not going to buy a one-off liqueur like Maraschino so I'd say go with the IBA spec for it but make certain you use a quality vermouth and orange bitters.

As for Plymouth gin, I do keep a bottle of the regular strength Plymouth and as for cocktails with it I like the 50/50 Martini with Lillet blanc in lieu of vermouth, it's an easy sipper with lots of flavor.
There's the very simple Gin & IT, which is still a 50/50 Martini but with sweet red vermouth. I'm partial to Cinzano, myself.
IMHO both the Tom Collins and Gimlet work better with Plymouth than with London dry, and of course an Old Tom gin Gimlet is so good that's it's dangerous.
Plymouth also works well in a cocktail so old it's an antique, the Classic Gin Cocktail, 2 oz. gin, 1/3 oz. curacao, barspoon of syrup & 2 dashes of Peychaud's bitters.
Don't try to order it at a bar, 99% chance the bartender won't know it and you'll be served a G&T.

cheers!

I wrote this while sipping an El Presidente.
1.5 oz. Bacardi white rum, .75oz dry vermouth, .25 oz Ferrand curacao, 1 barspoon grenadine.

I've always had a fondness for mojitos, though it's a coin toss whether people love or hate the mint.

Or if you're craving a hot drink:
  • 1 shot spiced rum
  • 1 shot cinnamon or butterscotch schnapps
  • Country style apple juice (heated)
  • Combine in mug

Sex on the beach is my go-to:
  • 5 or 6 ice cubes not too many as it can make it watery af and you can't taste the juice then
  • 2 fingers across measurement of vodka and 2 fingers of peach schnapps ymmv depending on how much you want
  • Then fill up 3/5 with orange juice and 2/5 with cranberry juice
  • Blend until its all mixed, the ice might rest on top so if serving 2 pour a little bit into both until ice is gone for evenly cold drinks.
Also ymmv depending on the blender size, mine is for protein shakes so its a little bigger than a pint.
Add straw and a little umbrella to your astolfo cup for maximum fruity look

Bacardi 151 and Coke, with a splash of lime juice. Good for getting wasted quickly.

Seriously, though, I always tend to order a rye Manhattan whenever I go out to a bar.
