Thousands. Melton's Encyclopedia of American Religions lists and describes over 2,300 distinct denominations, sects, and cults active in North America, and I'm sure at least that many flew under his academic radar, and operate as informal fellowships, clandestine circles, or Internet-only virtual groups supported by Patreon-like arrangements. And then you have the "therapy/self-help" groups like Landmark-Forum, the "business/entrepreneurial" ones like Amway, and the "political" ones like the LaRouchites, all of whom are essentially secular movements, but who are based on the vision and leadership of charismartic figures, and are organized and operate along lines suspiciously similar to religious cults.Given how these weirdos ended up so obscure, it makes you wonder how many other L. Ron Hubbard wannabes like Col. Bobby are out there.

I know of a lot of them, like Amway and other multi-level marketing pseudo-faiths, or some other weird groups like Synanon (they all had to shave their heads, and George Lucas hired some Synanon cultists as extras for his first film THX 113. I know of all sorts of weird churches too, but they all have beliefs which blend together (the Independent Fundamentalist Baptist churches, or the Christian Identity churches), but there has to be some which go above and beyond like Col. Bobby and his Akurians. I even have a friend who spent some time at a local cult compound linked to human trafficking and the drug trade (and ran by an alleged rapist--the place is nicknamed "Jonestown Pt. 2") which preys on certain groups of people.
But I'm most interested in the people who claim weird shit like Bobby Farrell and L. Ron Hubbard did, or like that Czech guy Ivo Benda of the Universe People UFO cult. Shit which is entertaining and sounds like a fantasy/science fiction writer on drugs.
I'd be interested in hearing more about your friend's experience. PM me?
As for genuinely weird cults: you've no doubt heard of the Raelians -- the saucer-sex sect led by a former French race-car driver?
He didn't say much about the group, other than he lived with them for a bit and had friends who really experienced (seems like temporary guests don't experience much bad, but if you want to live there, you might run into some bad shit) the whole amount of bullshit the cult compound had, like the leaders stealing your weed and other drugs as part of the "rent" you owed them. They've been raided by the police a few times regarding drugs (probably for growing marijuana--IIRC meth and other "hard drugs" weren't involved). That's about all I know about this group. I haven't talked with this guy in a bit, so I can't say anything more. He did confirm the place was very sketchy and that it's nickname of Jonestown was rather accurate. I've never been there myself though, but know where it is (it's a trailer park in a place where most people live in trailer parks).
A classic. I love their emblem, the swastika and Star of David which has provoked so much "debate" over the years. Or how they claimed to have created the first cloned human. Or simply their recruiting methods, with naked chicks everywhere. Beats my local Scientology Org with it's giant fence, empty parking lot, and a sign saying "Get the Truth [some website link]".
Do you know what their beliefs and rites/practices -- if any -- are? I have a particular fascination with sects that use drugs as sacraments.
What's the name of the cult? Kiwifarms totally is about exposing bizarre/evil/illegal shit sometimes. That's what the horrorcow tag is for.Searching them brings up a lot of articles with nothing but praise, so they've done a great job at PR, although there's still evidence of their corruption. Local authorities generally don't care outside of occasionally smacking them down for growing pot, since rural cops in the area are generally corrupt and care about other shit (like getting their boss, the county sheriff, re-elected). This place seems to be a sort of "communal settlement" mixed with a campground for "alternative" sorts of people (they market themselves toward "hippies"), but it seems worthy to call it a cult the same way you might call Amway a cult. At it's core, it's a couple of leaders (described by one guy as comparable to Charles Manson, in addition to the Jonestown comparisons) luring vulnerable people in and some less-vulnerable hanger-ons (for credibility) to get labor, drugs, etc. out of them. It's some strange shit, and I have no desire to go for a visit to see it for myself. I might have taken pictures of Brianna Wu's house, but it's a bit more dangerous doing the same to random trailer parks, since god knows what these people are up to. Murder isn't limited to the big city ghettos around here.
Overall, it's a warning that horror movies are right and avoid strange rural campgrounds and strangely inviting locals in rural places.
EDIT: This thread got me doing some research, and it's also marketed as a campground for the homeless and other transients (especially a place for drug rehab, which seems to be questionable ), which is probably where the more permanent population comes from, and all the inevitable results, like hobos bringing their semi-feral dogs which have killed local livestock and lots of EBT/welfare-related crime. But we're degressing from the topic here, and I don't think this cult (which runs what is basically a concert venue, albeit a very bad one) is entertaining enough for a thread here. I think Kiwifarms is for laughing at weird people, not exposing bizarre/evil/illegal shit that goes on in your community (which is probably also going on elsewhere).
Okay.... Who would be opposed to creating like a cult mega-thread? I think with all the small anecdotal cults/user stories/and lolcow breeding ground potential it would be a hit. Any thoughts?
