🐱 Columbia students reflect on ‘passing’ and ways to support trans students - Passing is SO HARD

CatParty

Charlie Warren, a first-year film and television major, identifies as non-binary, which is a term for people whose gender identity doesn’t sit comfortably with “man” or “woman.” Warren found themselves not even being able to attempt to transition or experiment with passing as another gender in their hometown in Kansas.

However, during their time at Columbia, they have been able to experiment more with how they present and how they like to be perceived.

The annual Trans Day of Visibility is over, but the trans experience is a year-long experience for those who identify as trans, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming. With the experience, comes a lot of joy, a sense of contentment, but also some struggles.

“[I’ve learned] I want people to assume at first glance that I’m masculine or a male,” Warren said. “Something along those lines. Not that I am [male], but that’s what I want to pass as.”

Warren said not passing can be difficult, but they try not to take it too personally when they are misgendered. According to U.S. Department of Justice’s Office Victims of Crime, passing is when someone is perceived as male, female, or another gender, however, how a person is perceived by others is not always consistent, which can lead to misgendering.

“I do recognize that I don’t necessarily pass very well. I get [called] ma’am a lot by people. Usually, I’ll correct them, and they’ll get better after that,” Warren said. “But, initially, [passing] is not something I think I do necessarily very well.”

The concept of passing itself is a bit controversial, with some people having the idea that those who pass are superior to those who don’t, which consequently invalidates and dehumanizes those who may not pass. Online, Warren has seen many trans kids ask others how well they pass, even going as far to ask people to rate them on how well they would pass if they saw them on the street.

“It’s not a healthy thing,” Warren said. “I don’t want to discourage trans people from thinking it’s wrong to want to look the gender that they identify as, but there’s a really toxic mindset that goes into ‘if I don’t look trans enough, or if I don’t pass, then suddenly it’s not acceptable.’”

While others don’t pass, some do. Finn Schulz, a first-year photography major, now a year on hormones, has what he called “passing privilege,” which is a privilege a trans person who is perceived as cisgender has that may limit their risk of facing prejudice, harassment and risk of violence, as well as result in better employment opportunities.

“I know that not everybody can [pass]. Personally, I like passing and it is my goal, but I don’t have the idea that everybody needs to pass,” Schulz said. “It’s up to them if they want to have that as a goal or not.”

Schulz began transitioning his junior year of high school, which was when the COVID-19 pandemic was starting. There, he began to present online and in-person as male. Schulz’s transition, like many others, did have some struggles, as he was often misgendered by people close to him.

“I got misgendered for a really long time, and honestly, I still get misgendered by those people in my personal life, like my family,” Schulz said. “Now that I’m on hormones, I have a deeper voice and I appear as a masculine figure, and pass to strangers.”

Schulz said it is important to not make assumptions of what people’s pronouns are and to always make sure to ask them when you first meet them.

Matthew Rillie, coordinator of Student Support and Engagement, works closely in the Student Diversity and Inclusion office on advocating for trans students, as well as other issues concerning the student experience.

“If a policy or a resource is not actively inclusive for trans students, then we’re [SDI] going to fight to change it,” Rillie said. “If it’s not actively doing work to include and affirm and help heal students who have been hurt by systems of power, then I’m not interested in it.”

Rillie said resources such as Gender-inclusive housing, gender-inclusive restrooms, the trans union, first name change forum, The Rack, and more, have all been student demanded and fought by students.

Despite the resources having grown and expanded over the years, Rillie said there is still a long way to go.

“We also try to create a space for like healing. I think that piece [healing] gets ignored widely,” Rillie said. “As resources grow, that’s great, but often when they’re not there, there’s a lot of harm that happens. So we center a lot of our work on both healing, and advocacy.

August Miller, a junior computer animation major, works as an intern for Student Diversity and Inclusion, where his role is to research, develop and orchestrate ways to better the lives of LGBTQ+ students on campus.

Miller runs the Trans Student Union, which caters to students who identify as trans, nonbinary and gender-nonconforming. The group has open discussions, arts and crafts sessions and more.

The group meets weekly on Fridays from 4 to 5 p.m. at 618 S. Michigan Ave. on the fourth floor.

“Basically, we just want to create a safe, affirming environment for trans people to exist in a space for an hour every week,” Miller said. “Whoever wants to come can come and there is not a certain amount of meetings you have to come to.”

There is no controversy here. The whole point of transitioning is to be that which you are not. So passing is kind of a big part of that, but hey these fuckers are on the same level of the other Tumblrtards that think mayo is a gender.

You can't pass. Maybe it happens sometimes on accident, an old person misgenders you or thinks you're a woman in passing, but what's the point? Are the weird social immunities to criticism and women's sports records worth cutting your dick off and fucking up your hormone profile? Your highest potential is a Blizzard game developer.

If passing is so hard, how come gay twinks in skirts can do it more convincingly then women trapped in a male body?
It's terribly ironic that the trannies ostracize/are at war with the drag queens, who sometimes pass and could teach them to pass more convincingly. But instead of utilizing their skillset they'd rather purge and exile them for not being ideologically current with them.

The hate always amuses me. Uttering the word Trap around trannies is like showing a crucifix to a vampire and the reaction will always amuse me. I've seen commenters get banned from streams by tranny jannies for just pointing out a character in a game is a trap. Literal hate speech or something, they can't even.

What's the difference?
  • Universities drive people crazy not make them crazier while attempting to cure them.
  • You are expected to listen to people who went through University.
  • Public nudity is encouraged at University for protest where this would just lead to them upping your dosage at the looney bin
  • University costs more.
  • Insane drivel receives a grade and can often be considered research at a University. Looney bin they call this an evaluation and don't give it much thought.
  • People don't typically award grant money to looney bins
  • Society doesn't shame you for not going to the looney bin
  • You are more likely to leave a looney bin with your genitals healthy and in tact
  • Universities don't have orderlies
  • Universities praise their female inmates for making up rape fantasies that cause trouble for others
I could go on

Because in many cases you are getting danger close to the line of causality as it actually played out. Once they've been found out, it is readily apparent just how silly their entire argument it. This self-created impotence is something I've thought about a lot and I have recently decided to call it the "Murphy-Goldman Theory" a unified explanation of the incel/coomer-to-troon pipeline. They don't have a counter to it so the work tirelessly to obscure it. I have seen this play out many times on the internet, unfortunately it is a very rapid process from infection to terminal cases. I would liken the prognosis for suffers to be similar to furfaggotry in that there is no recovery. My observations have quite apparently missed the Aiden's/Fujoshis and a similar degenerate syndrome presenting in females. While identifying this exists, I am currently unable to integrate it fully into MGT at this time. Though I have a strong personal belief that doing so is simply a matter of collecting the evidence I am ignorant of.

The Murphy-Goldman Unified Coombrain Theory:
Sexually insecure/unsuccessful males commonly find themselves using the internet for above-average amounts of time. Their social issues that lead to these failures likewise bleed into online personas. Due to this community friction there is a long-term percolation effect that leads to these individuals to congregate in a small number of communities with an extremely outsized relative representation. I would argue at this stage the above premises are self-evident. For more ignorant audiences I think this is best explained through chronicling my lurking activities on 4chan somewhere around 2004 to the present date.

First and foremost, it's retarded and always has been. There have been brief moments where savant type brilliance flashed up from the miasma of shit and sewer gas that was the average post, but these are very much exceptions and not norms. This internet dumpster fire naturally concentrated a high amount of coomers and pornography-enjoyers from day one. Same with weebs. Close enough to inception to consider it contemporaneous, some of the earliest 'viral' community activity centered around this. Admiral Ackbar's infamous line was cited a nearly infinite number of times. Every artfag was shitting out memes. Every anime with a trap-like character was mined for meme-worthy content. Most of this was still at the "just joking" and ironic stages, with a very small minority of this already-minority appearing to be genuine supporters. If we distill this explanation as a slippery slope, we've just gotten to the edge of the very top.

Linetrap/Bailey Jay and the resulting consequences of her online presence have been an unmitigated disaster for the human race. They could be weaponized by the pro-troon camp. "Traps" were now a legitimate scrolling-hazard for some of the less sharp-eyed coomers. Even anti-attempts were co-opted to make a mockery of their side. While LT did not single-handedly destroy the anti-camps, but it did expose a fatal weakness that could be readily exploited. Of course like Lenny, 4chan takes any meme and just chokes the fucking life out of it. Video editors, captioners, and shoppers ran wild creating content. It didn't matter what you postulated as an argument against these deviants, you'd only be answered by a stampede of chicks with dicks.

In perhaps the most abhorrent expression of Poe's Law, it starts to bring in actual true believers. The strategy was also noticed by equally degenerate groups with slightly different tastes. BBC, cuck porn, sissy hypno, and the more degenerate paraphilias largely followed similar trajectories and the result was near-complete capture of the porn addicted incels and coomers. Traps became the mechanism in communities like this to "crack eggs" to borrow one of their own terms. It appeals to the AGP, quite apparently. It appeals to the HSTS- it sells them a delusion that can never be reality. Traps have been the standard-bearer guiding us down the slippery slope, they are the foundations upon which this metaphorical temple of deviancy is built. When you drop one of the cases where someone "took the bait" it really defeats all of their arguments and it's hard not to laugh at them for taking it seriously.

@BelUwUga

Quote issue, but I wish I could give it a thunk-provoking. I feel like there's a missing piece in the theory to link together developmental trauma caused disassociation in the chain somewhere. Something like people who have a break between their physical state/feeling -> Troon pipeline.

If you don't tell me your pronouns in advance, you can't complain if I misgender you. It's not my fault you don't pass, troon. (Also don't be surprised after you tell me that I just happened to never remember what your pronouns are, pervert)

The only thing this woman passes as is a pepperoni pizza.

Jokes aside, cystic acne is fucking awful. This young woman hates herself so much she takes a drug that literally causes her skin to erupt in painful, scarring boils. This is some crazy medieval shit being passed off as progress.

Someone needs to inform her about Isotretinoin. There is just no excuse for not telling patients about this medication, every MD should know what it is and suggest it for people who have this kind of acne.

You don't pass. People are just being nice. 98% of the time you can spot a troon a mile away. I don't have to indulge in your fetish if it makes me uncomfortable. Your pronouns are not my problem.

The vast amount of trannys will never, ever be able to "pass" because Venture Bros convinced them that a woman's voice doesn't matter as much as their body. I've yet to meet one that sounds remotely female, lol.

What's the difference?

One was closed down despite doing its job well all things considered

One remains open despite not doing its job at all.

Why is it so important for transgenders to "pass", I mean, they'll eventually get there anyway and when they do, their parents will mark their graves with their birth names.

It's a cognitive dissonance I'm envious of, in that if I tried to do it, my brain would melt down like a wet sponge in a microwave.

On the one hand, they're so certain they were born the wrong gender that they'll pay thousands for dodgy surgery and expensive courses of medication to mimic just a fraction of any actual change.... all while making a complete ass of themselves and their family names in public.... tearing apart a retail store with their bare hands because IT'S MA'M!

But the instant someone on the other side of the continent, or world, misgenders them in passing while adding to a forum thread?

POW! I'm going to commit suicide and it'll be ALL YOUR FAULT for breaking me with your transphobia!

I think I've seen one in the wild that kinda passed. Briefly, your brain slowly notices all the wrongness the more you look. Also the height, combined with the high-heel boots, tight yellow pencil skirt and constantly bending over a car with an open hood. Real women wouldn't have worn the yellow that time of year or at all, and it felt too much like a porno setup.

Lurking trannies and clueless men, women care more about color than you think and it pays to learn what works and what's seasonal. Pays to learn for yourself too, women will notice if you learn how to wear color better, or at least figure out what you look good in. Most Trannies don't know this.

If I were attending an expensive and private art college, the only "passing" I'd care about would be my classes. Columbia College is raising its tuition by 10% this year, but it must be nice worrying over being accepted as an enby instead of your college fees.
