EXCLUSIVE: Comcast’s Spectacor division is pulling the plug on video game-centric network G4 TV, whose early incarnation in the 2000s remains a cultural touchstone for many millennials, just a year after its relaunch.

In a memo set to be sent out to all employees, Spectacor CEO Dave Scott explained that the company’s investment and efforts to revive the network just didn’t gain traction.

A few dozen employees and contract workers are affected by the shutdown. Comcast said it will assist them with outplacement and consider some for internal opportunities.

The departure over the summer of Russell Arons, an experienced digital media exec who had come aboard as G4’s president in 2021, was a precursor to today’s news. Her duties were added to the portfolio of Joe Marsh, a Comcast Spectacor vet who has been CEO of T1, an international esports joint venture with Korea’s SK Telecom.

The current iteration of G4 is smaller and less focused on traditional linear TV than was its predecessor. It has announced a programming slate including a revived version of original G4 mainstays Attack of the Show! and Xplay, plus comedy Boosted, Japanese competition series Ninja Warrior, esports competitions and Dungeons & Dragons limited series.

Along with putting content on YouTube and social media, G4 has a multi-year agreement with Twitch and pay-TV distribution deals with Verizon FiOS, Cox, Xfinity TV and Philo.

Several media and tech ventures centered on the gamer community have hit turbulence recently, with Facebook shutting down its gaming app and Google winding down gaming service Stadia. VENN, a start-up billed as the “MTV of video games,” also just went bust.

G4’s initial run began in 2002 under co-owners NBCUniversal and Dish Network. The network was created by former Disney TV exec Charles Hirschhorn, who saw it as a successor to MTV in its potential to tap into youth culture. A number of notable personalities appeared as hosts on G4 in its early run, among them Olivia Munn, Chris Hardwick, Kevin Pereira and Grace Helbig.

After it went dark in 2014, G4’s place on the dial was taken over by the Esquire Network, which would prove to be a short-lived branding exercise. Amid a groundswell of enthusiasm on social media, new owner Comcast Spectacor revealed plans at Comic-Con’s virtual 2020 edition for the network’s return.

Spectacor’s main business focus is on sports and live events, with the division owning the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers as well as their home arena, the Wells Fargo Center, along with numerous other assets. The results of G4 were never particularly material to Spectacor, but the division has avidly pursed esports, making the G4 revival a logical thing to attempt.

Here is Scott’s full memo, which Deadline obtained from a source:

Team:

As you know, G4 was re-introduced last year to tap into the popularity of
gaming. We invested to create the new G4 as an online and TV destination for fans
to be entertained, be inspired, and connect with gaming content.

Over the past several months, we worked hard to generate that interest in G4, but
viewership is low and the network has not achieved sustainable financial
results. This is certainly not what we hoped for, and, as a result, we have made the
very difficult decision to discontinue G4’s operations, effective immediately.
I know this is disappointing news, and I’m disappointed, too. I want to thank you
and everyone on the G4 team for the hard work and commitment to the network.

Our human resources team is reaching out to you to provide you with support,
discuss other opportunities that may be available, and answer any questions you
may have.

Thank you again for all of your hard work for G4.

Sincerely,

Dave Scott
Chairman and CEO
Comcast Spectacor

I seem to be in the minority for thinking that this Froskurinn thing is not a woman... Is there actual proof of them being a woman? Something that looks like that definitely needs to prove their genuine female status. Maybe a yearbook photo? Pictures from their childhood? Or even a picture of them with bare shoulders because no matter what they do you can always tell from the shoulders.

Even their "real" name, "Indiana Juniper Black" is the tranniest fucking name I've ever heard. Any pictures of them when they still used the name "Devin Ryanne Mohr"? I mean come on, they even have a deadname.

My point earlier about Brianna Wu is that he's never admitted to being a tranny and just pretends that he's a real actual female. My opinion is that Froskurinn is doing the same thing but with a lesbian twist. I am open to the idea that I am wrong. I want to see some evidence.

I seem to recall something from Midnight's Edge about Frosk knowing she fucked up with that little speech of hers and how she had to double down or be cannibalized by her circle of friends and higher ups that towed the feminist line. Dunno how true that is though.

I don't think that ever happened. After the rant, everyone seemed to close ranks against their miniscule audience, and in that respect, Frosk isn't even the worst of the bunch. Adam Sessler is ten times more obnoxious and retarded.

WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT ALIENATING YOUR CORE AUDIENCE WOULD BE BAD FOR BUSSINESS

"I'm not here for your pleasure." Yeah, that was your first mistake.
I'm surprised I never thought of it that way, but, yeah, by definition TV personalities whole job is to please the audience.

Only a CURRENT YEAR wokescold could fractally misunderstand that by assuming

A. Its not their job to please viewers
B.Viewers only exist to exalt the on air talent and/or the talent's political views.
C. Any enjoyment viewers get for any other reason is malicious and deviant.
D. If the talent is female, said deviance has sexual motives, without question.

There was pics posted on 4chin of her from her college days. OP was someone who was in her social circle and never made any mention of frosk being a tranny and the pics of her look normal enough before she went giga-lezz. Should be one of the highlighted posts in the big g4tv thread over on the vidya subforum

E. Being sexually interested in women is some kind of deviance.

This one? Went through the highlights, didn't see it. Searched for "college", only got one post but it was unrelated.

Let this be a lesson to any media corporation, ESPECIALLY when it comes to video games:

If any of your prospective hires looks like this, or sounds like this: DO NOT HIRE THEM.
YOU WILL GO OUT OF BUSINESS BEFORE THE YEAR ENDS.
Somebody will. Somebody always does. It is like a law of nature at this point, that the more psychotic the female, the more likely she is to attract well placed simps. (At least until they get old and fat like Zoe Quinn.)

Damn, how is Adam Sessler going to support his coke habit now?
Oh, please, I bet that wimp has moved on to adderall while pretending it's just like what he really wants.

Anyways, memes aside, this revival of G4 was always hopeless. It wouldn't have mattered if they threw that Frosk bitch out the door the day after her rant. Or if they never signed her in the first place. G4 wasted a golden opportunity in the 00s and even in the 2010s. I had gotten to the point where I got more enjoyment out of Ninja Warrior than their gaming shit.

This quote from Neal Tiles, a former president of the channel, will always be hilarious in hindsight.
guys like to play games, but not necessarily watch a bunch of shows with games on the screen.
Twitch and Youtube proved him to be dead wrong, to the point where this reboot was dead on arrival.

You want game reviews in video form? Youtube. You want to see someone play the game live? Twitch or Youtube. You want to see the game being played without some idiot talking over the footage? Youtube. What about some game related humor? Youtube, Twitch. You want to chat with someone as that person is playing the game? Twitch or Youtube.

G4 TV could have done Cinematech again. That's something that would be tough on Youtube and Twitch due to the content ID shit. However, that alone wouldn't be enough to "save" this incarnation of the channel. It'd just be filler, at best.

Just like an autistic lolcow bitching about a minor change in their well-made schedule The death of nu-G4 was inevitable. It failed to reach its target audience thanks to any jackoff on YouTube being able to cover gaming news, more charismatic content creators having followings elsewhere, failing to cover actual gaming events (although I will chalk this one up to COVID taking a massive dump on a majority of the competitive gaming scene), and having employees that just plain hate the average gamer.

Oh, and if this tweet is any indication then you can also chalk it up to G4 being terrible with money.
(At least until they get old and fat like Zoe Quinn.)
Melissa McCarthy says otherwise, I’m still shocked that she’s in the industry after the dumpster fire that was Ghostbusters 2016.

I've heard Adam Curry -- the guy who created podcasts, talk about the fact that these legacy TV people have zero idea how to operate in the modern entertainment scene when it comes to running a good budget, I'm starting to agree with his assessment. If you look at how much staff this G4TV crew had for such the small offerings they were doing you can see why this was a surefire road to collapse. Curry points out that CNN, MSNBC, and other organizations are trying to expand into the podcasting scene but they continue to overspend on staff... countless producers and useless eaters on staff just devouring the budget when podcasting is just effectively one or a few people with microphones. I didn't watch anything G4TV produced, whether it be the original or current incarnation, I believe it devolved into just a trio of people playing games like it was Twitch, which begs the question "Why did they need so much staff?"
