🐱 Comedians Keep Making Jokes at the Expense of Trans Folks — We Dig into Why - Bc it’s funny?

For some reason, Netflix has chosen to be the go-to platform for (typically cishet male) comedians telling jokes about trans people. While Dave Chappelle’s 2021 special sparked a debate on the power of free speech and what right cishet male comedians have to talk about trans people’s experiences, more and more comedians have seemingly decided to join in on this controversial “fad.”

In May 2022, Netflix released Ricky Gervais’sspecial SuperNature, which sparked another round of outrage after he dug into trans rights just five minutes into the special. While both Dave and Ricky, along with Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos, have defended their jokes, many comedy fans are infuriated with this pattern of cishet comedians making trans jokes. So why do they do it? Distractify spoke with some up-and-coming comedians about their thoughts on the matter.

Some comedians may tell jokes about trans people to stir up media controversy and attention.

Comics have never shied away from attention — and that’s not a bad thing! There’s a reason stand-up comedy is a popular form of entertainment. However, whenever a comedian makes a controversial statement in their stand-up, whether it’s about trans rights, the Holocaust, or mental health, people tend to talk about it. And as the old saying goes, “Any press is good press.”

Stand-up and Twitter comic Charlie Bardey mused that this is probably why comedians make jokes at the expense of the trans community. “When trans comedians tell trans jokes, they do it because it's normal and wonderful to tell jokes about your own life,” he reminds us. “When washed up, over-the-hill mega stand-ups tell trans jokes, they usually do it because they need engagement and they see stoking the flames of a cultural war the easiest way to do it.”

All comedy is personal and based on that specific comic's own personal experiences. We have no way of knowing exactly why certain comedians tell certain jokes, but it is an enlightening thought experiment to figure out what’s behind this pattern.

While some comedians just like to push buttons, others may not even realize the damage that these jokes can cause.

Ricky Gervais tried to justify his special by saying he “of course supports trans rights” and that he is an “equal opportunity offender.” But even if a comedian is “just kidding,” jokes that target the trans experience are worrisome because they cut through everything trans folks are fighting for. These jokes can validate the people who don’t support trans rights at all, even if the comedian says that they do.

“I think some comedians make jokes at the expense of the trans community because they lack empathy and understanding,” comedian Mary Beth Barone told us. “They choose to ignore the damaging effects these jokes have on a marginalized community.” Of course this isn’t a generalization on all comedians, but any comedian making a joke at the expense of another community has the responsibility to at least consider the damaging effects.

Another potential problem with making jokes about trans people? They’re not funny.

In all fairness, part of comedy is toeing the line between the controversial, the offensive, and the funny, but most comedians will agree that it should all be in service of a hilarious punchline.

According to America’s Got Talent competitor Usama Siddiquee: “I think a lot of comics like hitting hot button issues, whether or not they have expertise on it," he told us. "Comedy is very ephemeral, so current events are fodder for comedians. The problem is they don’t always hit the mark.”

In the cases of Ricky and Dave, many reviewers and fans alike agree that they didn’t necessarily hit the mark. Plus, it is possible to tell jokes about the trans community that aren’t harmful. International comedian Tamer Kattan explained to us:
“Freud said ‘Comedy is a weapon of the underdog’ and I think that’s why there are so many trans comedians. They are valuable members of my tribe. Almost 100 percent of my material is in defense of the trans community because they are and have been under attack for a long time.”

The biggest positive here is learning that while some comedians might not be ill-intentioned, others are proud allies. “I am not trans, but I have been an underdog," Tamer added. "I have been attacked by hateful people and I know how much harder life is for my trans friends. The best part of having trans friends is not witnessing them going from one gender to another; the best part is watching them go from a dim light to a bright light.”

I hate how condescending these people are. What this article is implying is the audience of comedians are too stupid to understand what a joke is and that they might take a joke about trannies as as serious call to action. Leftists think you are too dumb to be able to listen to naughty jokes and they want to silence your favorite comedians. It's not different from the neocon's who said listening to Marylin Manson would make you into a devil worshipper in the 90s.

No need to dig into it, it's because it's funny, retard.

Just like Fat People, they'll never not be funny.

Don't like it? Don't be a fucking fatso or tranny. Simple.
I get you are being edgy and I agree about people improving themselves if jokes hit too hard home but I don't think what these guys are doing is okey. It's not matter of target, making jokes about anyone is fine, but going out your way to bother people till they brake isn't. That's bulling and being asshole with no redeeming qualities.

The redeeming quality is that it can push someone into bettering themselves or at the very least give them a reality check.

The total elimination of shame is why western society has become infested with weak people and degenerates.

I say this as a recovering fat fuck. I wish people would have pushed me more as a child so I didn't have to suffer so much the rest of my life trying to keep it under control.

They don't realise that they maybe should try being not fat lol.

They're fucking jokes. Get over it. These people demand that we show them respect and take them seriously as adults, but then they pitch literal tantrums like little children any time someone cracks a joke about them. Comedy is supposed to be the one part of life where anything goes and nothing is off limits. How many comedians have made fat jokes? How many black comedians have made fun of white people? You can either take the healthy option and laugh at yourself, or you can be a bitter little child and go pout about it at home. But you do NOT get to infringe upon peoples right to freely express themselves by censoring them and controlling what they can say.

"The jokes aren't funny." Did people in the audience laugh? Then it was funny. Like with how you have no right to control what people say, you likewise do not get to decide what is and isn't funny. Humor is subjective, an inherently personal thing for each individual. You can say subjectively "I don't find jokes about trans people funny." and you'd be well within your rights to say so. However, you CANNOT make a flatly objective blanket statement that tranny jokes aren't funny as if you speak for everyone. You do not have the right to decide what's funny for people.

"Comedy is for the underdogs, now let me explain in great detail why these two comedians are basically Hitler for going against the status quo!"

They were so close to a breakthrough but then they fumbled it lol

I love that they imply that the jokes just aren't funny and can't be made because the comedians are not experts and knowledgeable in the field. These are the same fuckers who think The Big Bang Theory is "smart comedy" because occasionally a character goes "OMG WHAT WOULD SPOCK DO?!?!"or another banger like "Quantum physics, am I right?"

Just goes to show how weak, empty and lacking in basic skills these people are, when they are relying on others to self-actualize their lives for them.

Is it any wonder they think a person can be defeated, utterly defeated, by a joke.

It's the same way that some black people are oddly proud of the fact they can be brought to their knees or left with no option but to violently fly into a rage by a mere word..... a WORD.

White people laugh at Redneck jokes, yet by your rules of engagement, doing that is self-harm and Jeff Foxworthy is to blame for all the poverty of Appalachia and the Rust Belt, combined.

If your great cause, your great fight, your defining sociological movement, can't get over the fact some people MOCK it... then it's by definition, not that great.

Yes shame can be great for us and work as a motivational tool. I'm fine if being fat is shameful as long as we don't go totally overboard with it. We are currently suffering from toxic body positivity witch came about previous harmul overreacting to fatness. It's unfortunate a balancing act where both extremes cause damage. I'm sure that balanced approach can include fat jokes, hurtful fat jokes. Fat jokes are funny and there are plenty of them.

I'm not cool with following strangers who happily leave you alone and going out your way cause emotional pain and misery to them just because you can. Is there possibility that this will work as wake up call someone? Sure, but wake up calls only really work on people who were already motivated and just needed final push. It's extremely unlikely that these boys are catching someone in such moment. That's just an excuse be a jerk and still feel good about yourself.
