Even if the quality of the artwork is consistent with my criticisms, story matters. 120 pages of stick figures could tell a compelling tale.
Very true, and thank goodness Iron Sights delivers on the writing front.

(This anti-CG guy did a read-through of the comic: https://www.twitter.com/Jafleece/status/1061115342150385664)

"I'm going to over-analyze this thing I'm predisposed to hate. Thread incoming!"

But anyone who would criticize Iron Sights' art but not that of the most recent Black AF is disingenuous. Look at this thing. That dude in the thumbnail… is his arm broken?

Somewhat defensive attitude towards this thing is surprising (or not surprising I guess) to me. I'm 100% sure that if some SJW did a fund riser and released such low quality product for $20 bucks then he'd get nailed to the cross by CG related people. But since "one of us" did it and he totally intended it to look bad then it is serviceable. Well, it is not. It looks bad and it reads bad.

You know, deep in your heart, that that is exactly what would happen if it happened on the other side.

Very true, and thank goodness Iron Sights delivers on the writing front.

Is this sarcastic or not?

Just looked up his name, and our "professor" and "esteemed comics historian" might be nothing more than a blogger pretending to be a journalist, since all I could find were these.

A page on MuckRack. This one has some funny shit in here.

No I'm being serious, I was a doubter but the comic is just so tightly written, with a narrative that grips you and never lets go.

Nothing settles the stomach after getting shot like Fritos. Might as well get her some Mountain Dew too.

I see your point and agree, but I've always thought Tostitos are better at settling your stomach after getting shot. That was mighty white of you.

I particularly appreciate how the main character was modeled after a constipated action figure as well.

(The panel of the guy with glasses screaming was also terrific, art-wise.)

To be fair, given his girth, hygiene and social tendencies, the cosplay could have been a lot worse. I mean this Is just fat old guy cosplay. But cosplay by a fat old guy who knows he’s a fat old guy. At least it isn’t Vampirella Troon!

The main character is just fantastic - you definitely can't tell he was written by a guy with three ex-wives, he feels so real!

Is Iron Sights really that poor a writing job?

Honestly, I think it's okay for where Zack is in terms of expertise, ie a goofy dad who doesn't have much experience with writing in general. It's mediocre, and with him doing the art itself (which is low level indie/self published level) is why I didn't back Iron Sights. It's certainly orders of magnitude more fun than a good portion of current comics, but that's mainly due to mediocre being a sore sight better than "fire the writer now".

Still backed Jawbreakers though; since like I said, I'll happily take a 90s inspired comic over the nothing that is now. Plus I'm fine with okay writing as long as its bolstered by good art in comics, just like how good writing can make me want a comic with merely okay art.

I doubt many people are going to be complaining. They knew Jawbreakers was going to be drawn by actual professional artists, and they knew Iron Sights wasn't. There was nothing deceptive about the crowdfunding. And as workmanlike as the product is, he churned out 120 pages in a quick timeframe which is more than most of these lazy fucks have done, many of whom have crowdfunded scams they got all the money for in many cases literally years ago.

Meyer literally did both these projects on a dare.

Feel free to hate capeshit - there's a lot of bad capeshit worth mocking, after all - but don't act like it was the nerds who wanted this media to become popular and angled it that way. They didn't care. They'd be happy with their shit just being left alone, and if you could maybe burn Joe Quesada at the stake that might be nice.

Some people wanted games to go mainstream so that they would be taken seriously. That way politicians wouldn't try to ban them every other weekend, or people wouldn't dismiss you as a shut in loser because they played GTA instead of watching House.

But that was achieved long ago...

I think part of this is why some anti-GG/anti-CG journalists are so bitter. They jumped on the bandwagon when it was popular, but now it's not the "hot new fad everyone is talking about!", but they can't leave because they have no transferable skills. It's great to be on the bleeding edge when every house has a Wii and everybody is playing Pokemon Go and Fruit Ninja, but now it's like claiming to be the worlds leading Pog journalist or a yoyo reviewer.

If ever you want a great contrast to what the Old School Comic Guys were like, vs these new Twitter Sperglings, find the movie "Painting With Fire". It's a Frank Frazetta documentary, with a ton of interview footage and Frank just being Frank in the neighborhood. But he talks about what a close knit group the comics guys were in the 60's and 70's. It's like watching the happiest ever episode of The Soprano's. The contrast with creators like Waid and some of these other fools is really striking.

It's kind of the same with GG. There's an old GameSpot documentary about E3. Seeing Jeff, Ryan, and the rest of the team talk about why they want to review games, and their principles like "If you were on the other side of the screen, what would you want to read?", compared to what game journalism became is like looking into a mirror universe.

I didn't back Iron Sights mostly because of the art. The dialogue from what I've read hasn't pissed/turned me off from reading unlike with Bendis or cringey shit like Gabby's writing. Still though the cover and poster might be the only things I genuinely would buy that's IS-related:

If they make a remaster, Canales improves his art style and they add coloring, I'm willing to throw some money at it.

I still find the difference in quality between the cover and the insides, hilarious as hell. If it was originally sent to a shop first, it would be an impulse buy that someone would get pissed off at the moment they open the book. Since it was crowdfunded and Meyer & Canales were pretty open to showing their work on the book, anyone claiming people were tricked into buying it are really reaching for straws.

There’s actually something refreshing about a comic cover that tries its hardest to sell the damn book. It’s been a long long time since we have seen it’s like.
