also rememeber the notorious starfires daughter comic self insert.
the standards for a good written and produced comic have gone way down if marvel and DC are shitting these out and expecting to get applause for it.
so much so that the Rippaverse comic could be mediocre and be considered good because its a breath of fresh air.

I don't give a fuck what Marvel or DC are doing when I'm pondering shelling out $45 for a book from Eric July. I care about whether his book is trash or not. I don't measure it by what anyone else is not doing.

Remember Comicsgaters are 40+ year old men mad at a book for little girls so $48 is ok to own the teenage girl libs. Probably dollar for dollar even hate reading said book ($9.99 on amazon.com) for teen girls is a better value than non woke but middling expensive crap.

Good for his business but unless a TV show gets made (a possibility) that is the only way it becomes culturally significant. (Edit) video games would do it too, needs another type of media, he has a band too so maybe music?

Yeah they are, remember these people give hundreds just for him to read a stupid message so they absolutely will keep coming back to buy more junk merch since they get a product at least. Buy cover one, come back buy cover two, come back buy a shirt, come back buy a poster, come back and buy trading cards, by then five purchases and a several hundred dollars including shipping costs are added to the ticker. With the Monetize Your Haters™ sales method loyal paypiggies will come back and buy more items every time somebody disagrees with them because that'll show them haters!

That view/donation conversion rate isn’t realistic at all.

You’re talking about an 86% conversion rate.

Normally only about 1 - 3 percent of views convert to donations for crowdfunders. A 5% conversion rate would be considered excellent.

But maybe I’m wrong, after all, the black community is famous for its integrity and honesty.

im wondering if this guy has too much of an incentive to lie.
the incentive is money, but his original goal was like, 100k or something.
he was ready to lose money as he wouldn't even break even with his warehouse and other costs to produce the comic.
so 2 million seems way more than he even expected.
he also talks a lot about wanting to actually start a comic book company and the integrity rules hes applying to his own comic and that will be printed on every comic. and he's seemingly been talking about starting a comic company for a very long time as well.
so this isn't a spur of the moment grift either.
i think there's a good chance he's not bullshitting, but his fans are really fanatical and buying up multiple purchases as we discussed earlier. maybe even as gifts for other people.
 
Kind of a dumb question that's been bugging me for a while: Is there any reason these CG niggas couldn't just use Amazon's Print on Demand feature to produce comic books? Is the quality just not there yet for color printing? Is it cost prohibitive above a certain number of orders?

Given that around half the households in the US have Amazon Prime and even without it orders above a certain level waive shipping fees it would certainly be a lot cheaper on the distribution side of things, at least inside the USA.

It's been brough up on a CG related stream before (maybe Shane Davis?). As far as I can remember the quality is reasonable but they'd still need books on hand for signatures/head sketches and creators would also have to send things out themselves anyways because of extra merch that is always a part of every campaign. I would also guess that it'd be harder to justify some of these prices otherwise. I'm sure theres something I could be forgetting.

I've read about it before and it comes down to amazon's cut. amazon takes roughly 30% as cost of printing and shipping and then another 30% as amazon's cut, iirc, so profit per book is super low, but in exchange the author basically doesn't have to do anything to ship books.

If you're willing to fulfill you make a lot more money doing it yourself. cost of printing these books is probably closer to 5-10%, and they actually charge for shipping so the cost is neutral. IGG takes nowhere near amazon's cut.

I can understand people not wanting to use it because the paper options are very limited and Amazon POD doesn't offer most of what a regular printer does. It's something I think I'm gonna try in the future when I have a series.

Amazon takes 40% from a paperback plus the cost to print, and 30% from an ebook. But you're still left making more than most comic book writers or novelists get from a book in royalties per issue.

Most novelists, if they see a royalty, would probably get $0.50 per book. Making $3 per novel on Amazon, and being in control, is more appealing to me.

Indiegogo + Stripe is 8% plus $0.30 per backer. It is much less than Amazon's 40% + cost to print, but you also need to think about this:

Amazon's cost to print one book at a time is much easier and cost effective than if somebody makes a low amount on Indiegogo and needs to print the whole run at once. The fewer copies you print through a regular printer the more it costs to print each issue.

It's easy to look at the Indiegogo numbers and think somebody is making a killing but there's a lot of expenses. I've hardly made anything on any of my campaigns.

You're not really looking at this clearly, there are at least 87000 views on that one video for a person who has almost 500k subs, it stands to reason that not everyone who buys that book was on that stream directly. I've seen news stories in conservative media that have nothing to do with comics talking about this. There are a lot of people that will buy this book that aren't even comic fans purely to Own the Libs. This is just a fact of life. There is no credible evidence at this point that July is lying about this. Furthermore, why do we even want it to be a lie?
