Kinda like fanfic isn't it? I imagine it feels like reading a fanfic of a franchise you arent familiar with but heard about.
Precisely, which is why it's a terrible idea to go in treating it as such because, while fanfic is free and therefore can get away with a lot more shorthand, comics require at least a little bit of a monetary investment in order to follow properly. As general rule of thumb, comic writers generally try and keep the first issue or two as straightforward as possible with idea being that every new #1 could potentially be someone's first #1, and it's important that a newcomer get sold on the characters by themselves before you try to sell them on looking into buying more comics. It's especially important when it comes to a relatively small series like Runaways where major plot points and events featuring them have happened since their series was first cancelled with shit like the Dark Wolverine series starring Wolverine's edgelord son or the Secret Wars tie-in.

What Rainbow, and the rest of Marvel for that matter, don't seem to get is that someone jumping right into new series that immediately starts off with a bunch of major plot points from the previous series is going to be immediately turned off by being told "oh you have buy these 10 other books to get this one" compared to a fanfic where there's less concern about attracting a readership because there's no monetary risk if no one reads about your shitty self-insert getting double teamed by Iron Man and Captain America.

(also thanks dude that's a lot more legible)
Fuck it, forget all the comicsgate and political sperging. I'm already out the door because there's a Jurassic Park velociraptor on the cover. What the fuck is that? That's not a superhero thing to me.

We're all Abe Simpson writing letters to the president complaining there are too many states these days. If the people running this shitshow industry don't understand just how much of an uphill battle it is to draw in even a nerd like me who is otherwise forgiving of esoteric continuity faggotry in my games and shows, then they were loons even before social justice became their cause du jour.
To be fair that was a thing from the original Runaways series - the purple haired chick in the background had the power to telepathically control dinosaurs (or rather that specific dinosaur) a la Aquaman-style talk to fish powers - so that's always been part of it. Though it does highlight another thing about what's happened with Runaways in that the original idea behind its inception was to bring in a new audience by having a comic that wasn't bogged down by the continuity bullshit of the rest of Marvel and that you could pick up a Runaways volume and not have to know anything about the Marvel universe or any current events in order to be invested; they were even sold in manga-style bound books in order to attract people getting into the anime/manga boom at the time. But it seems like that's been thrown out the window in favor of cramming them into the big events and reboots because Marvel just can't help themselves.

And to get slightly back on topic, I was looking back at the nu-Runaways page @damian put up and it hit me how many of these writers like Rainbow Rowell, Gabby Rivera, Chelsea Cain, etc. who were plucked from the young adult novels community just don't get how comics as a medium work at all. So many of them resort to "WORDS WORDS WORDS" and over-explaining shit that should be obvious from the images that it pretty much undercuts any emotion we're supposed to get from it. For reference sake, here's the same scene from Runaways with the narration removed:

Why does anyone expect paying customers to go for something the shit author describes as fanfic when you can get fanfic for free?

Because you get to see the AVENGERS!....wait, they killed off a lot of them for a few years now for a bunch of diversity tokens with awful plots? Uh....I got nothing.

I'm still baffled at the idea that the best way to take advantage of the Marvel name is to stop publishing Marvel characters. Just say something about representation, that's sure to make it work.

Yellow Flash, the genius behind the Comicsgate Black list, is CG's own worst enemy. I normally keep an eye on the usual suspects, I thought of sharing some Erik Larsen facebook posts I found, until i saw the amount of autism from him.
screencapture-twitter-YellowFlashGuy-status-974162543160815617-2018-03-15-02_15_28.png

Some guy named Yellow Flash made a Black List of the "Portland Mafia" and added other spergs that qualify as SJW in the comics indutry. Yellow Flash is a small time youtuber and has all the "Pros" going nuts about it.

A bunch of spergery from both sides: https://twitter.com/search?f=tweets&vertical=default&q=comicsgate list&src=typd
To cover this a bit better i have to go back to the Blacklist. The blacklist divided the "community" and when he faced criticism about it, he became a textbook case of 'can dish it but can't take it':
Before:
screencapture-twitter-search-2018-03-15-00_51_51.png

After:
screencapture-twitter-YellowFlashGuy-status-963213946235883520-2018-03-15-01_56_13.png

YF refers to a livestream (dont know which) where they discussed the blacklist and started getting blockhappy (just like the people he mocks):

screencapture-twitter-NenkotaMoon-status-970021950096584704-2018-03-15-01_57_03.png

Now then, what caused this new sperg out? Tim Doyle. The "community" had a problem with how much YF was focusing on and obsessively tweeting about him.

The "community" started to ask him to stop sperging out about Tim Doyle:

And this was his reaction:

It got to the point even his "friend" started disassociating from him:

What can i say other than :story:

This looks like a pitiful child in desperate search of a 'cause' to put all his life into. At least the GG spergs did it to shill money

Nah, I meant that :optimistic:, this is the 1st sperg we know of.

Of course autism is a given in any -gate.
I know a few others but they're not that interesting. They just parrot a lot.

I literally never heard of this Yellow Flash person before he pulled that blacklist stunt. Does he have a youtube or something? What does he do other than sperg on twitter?

Here's the Erik Larsen facebook posts that I mentioned before:

WHOOPS:

The 2017 numbers aren't out yet (to my knowledge), but considering ALL the discounts, 'buy 1, get 1 free' and collection sales strategies the number could be inflated. Hell right now, Comixology has 2 Marvel Promotions. A 'Buy 1, Get 1 Free' and a '.99 sale'. The .99 sale has most of the crap books they always claim are "BestSellers" lol.

I would actually recommend checking the .99 sale if you guys like over 95% discount rates for the Marvel Master Works.

This is an interesting post regardless of ideology, but I have a few rebuttals to it though:

1) Erik is correct that publishers should not be listening to every vocal contingent, but the problem here is that the comics industry already listened to a vocal contingent (SJWs), and even worse, it's a vocal contingent that has now been proven to not buy any comics!

2) Erik makes the fatal error of referring to customers as Terrorists, that is a very unfortunate choice, given both the actual meaning of the word and the charged reaction it will bring from those he described with it.

3) I agree with Larsen that customers are not one unified voice, no matter how much SJWs try to mould them to be, but simple financial sense dictates that the contingent that pays more should be catered to, no? It's not a question of ideology, it's a question of a capitalistic company doing what it needs to do best.

Surrrre, Erik. Comics do change their characters, but when it keeps customers coming in past the initial sales boost, those characters stick around, like when Kyle Rayner replaced Hal Jordan as Green Lantern and Wally West took over the Flash mantle from Barry Allen.

When characters come in and bomb, they're gone fairly quickly (like when Artemis took over for Diana as Wonder Woman and Stephanie Brown replaced Tim Drake as Robin).

But that's OK, Erik - keep on clinging to your delusion. You used to be good once, but now Savage Dragon is just hanging on by pushing out stupid garbage like this:

>They were always supposed to come back! All part of the master plan!

I see this argument a lot but is it really true? Why would they be going on about "representation" and "progress" if the plan was always to revert? Wasn't the argument about how "Diversity" will save everything because of said "representation" and you're saying they wanted to pull the rug from under that? Tell those supposedly "empowered" people to fuck off? Did you think Marvel would've wanted to deal with the PR nightmare that comes with cancelling all these "diversity" books in this climate?

If the implication is Marvel was leading people on then I would agree but probably for different reasons. You can say that it's no different than people getting annoyed with Superior Spider-Man but you could say anything about that book without Dan Slott or some clickbait article accusing you of being a genocidal white supremacist.

Why can't we just admit the experiment was a failure? I get Larson's thing is artistic freedom which I agree with but he should just talk about that instead of trying to defend the pretend saviors of humanity while using arguments that call them idiots for their dumb beliefs.

edit: we got namedropped

This is bit old, but i got reminded of it from another board and i don't think i saw it mentioned here. A bunch of the usual suspects spergged out on Peter Simeti. D&C even made a video on it (im too lazy to look it up atm, will edit it in, if i find it later). What was his crime? RT-ing fans of Diversity and Comics.
:story: You cant make this shit up :story:
Instead of doing anything else during New Years, they literally became this:
