This was the only storyline/plot point Dan Slott wrote that was worth half a shit. Doc Ock was on his deathbed, tricked Spiderman into visiting him, and used some invention to shift his Doc Ock consciousness into Spiderman to possess/take-over his body(Peter Parker didn't get swapped into Doc Ock's body, he was an unwilling passenger in the back seat for about 12 issues). Doc Ock's motivation was obviously to survive, but also beat Spiderman by being a better Spiderman than he ever was. Builds gadgets that help him monitor and respond to street-level crime faster, run a science company better, bang his midget assistant, etc. It also tied into the Spider-Verse storylines where there's Spidermen from other dimensions/alternate universes, and they largely cooperate & share stories with each other, but Doc Ock is always flaky/nervous about there being so many other spider people from other realities and there's multiple Parkers, but only one Ock and he's beaten in most other iterations.(Spider-man was now Doctor Octopus or Doctor Doom or some shit, I don't know it was fucking dumb and I wanted no part of it).
Anyways, Dan Slott is a hack writer and this storyline is over. I sympathize with your rejection of it but it had some nice plot points.
