Not always, where I live doing what I do I'm obliged to be a part of union, sort of like bar for lawyers, and you really wouldn't want me un-unionized. But then I get actual help with issues I might have from my union and they do a lot behind the curtain work with legalise. But the work part- nothing stops anyonone from sacking me if I don't do go job and this is the part they don't get. Especially in creative jobs, especially when you have to pay 5kusd/year to be a part of union. Can you see anyone of the dangerhair being able to afford that? Yearly? And for that to work the actual workplace would have to be unionized itself- good luck getting Marvel to sign up with a union lol If Rupaul's hairdresser was recently sacked because he couldn't afford 5k a year to unionize, how a comicbook dangerhair will fair? And if the fee will be lower the standards of the union will be lower too- because no high quality pro will want to work for them for jack shit and complimentary variant book cover.
Besides, they should really talk to French or Swiss about their experience.
SNACBD did their poll few years back and learnt that by selling one tome of BD in store authors get no more than 1 euro per 10euro book (which not surprisingly is pretty much same in the US market). Publisher gets 4euros, store 5. And then it's all taxed. And union can do jack, because civil law and individual contract laws still applies.
Alsonin France you have to join them if you want to apply artist tax credits and is considered a mean to avoid tax fraud, but they do offer a free pass to all French museums for joining, so that's a bonus, I guess.
