Ellis's Moon Knight had garbage sales and the only thing people actually LIKED about it was the art and the redesigned costume that debuted in Ellis's run.

In fact, the ONLY ONLY fucking books that Ellis did that sold was Thunderbolts (which had Big Name villains in it and variant covers to boost sales) and even then, Ellis was so fucking late with the second arc he did that they had to rush out about 5-6 specials (and a mini-series involving Speedball) to keep the title afloat and even then, Ellis's lateness killed interest and Bendis was allowed to cannibalize the "big name" characters and the guy who replaced Ellis was left with a bunch of F-List characters forced onto him to replace Venom and Green Goblin and Bullseye. And maybe his second arc on Astonishing X-Men, which had Ellis be forced to use big name artist Phil Jimenez (and the arc promoted as "Jimenez is back!"). His first Astonishing X-Men story flopped HARD and the third one was put out as a mini-series so they could replace him and basically killed Astonishing as a book, resulting in Marvel putting F-List rookie writers on it afterwords until it got canceled.

Fuck, Ellis had so many bad selling books he was forced to break his longstanding militant "NEVER BUY THE MONTHLY, ONLY THE TRADE" stance because his Marvel books sold so badly that Marvel literally told him, point blank, "why the fuck should we even be doing trades of your work if they can't even sell as a monthly"?

Ellis is only good for creator owned work and DC isn't there for that because of the way Vertigo was slowly killed off his Wildstorm work sold for shit and was hated by longtime Wildstorm fans for how he race bent a lot of characters and pushed anti-white hate mongering (literally having one white Wildstorm character spew a lot of really racist shit to cement to readers that white people were the devil/villain). He explicitly also wrote for non-Image indie outlets because he got better deals from them to publish through them, and even then only Red got made into a movie and INO cartoons like GI Joe Renegades and his abortion of a Castlevania series.

Getting #MeTooed is his death sentence since only people that would give him a chance are his sycophantic proteges who've since disowned him. Jim Lee most likely won't let him near Wildstorm/see it as a blessing in disguise that will leave the line unmolested and Marvel won't hire him because he's always been a failure that never delivered sales for them due to his bullshit behavior. His only remaining property that people care about is Transmet and who knows if Darrick will have anything to do with him and the fact that he'd piss off a lot of people if he tried to continue it given how definitive an ending it had.

There have been a LOT of stories speculating about the truth about Ellis's numerous unfinished stories from the mid-00s and the computer crash he claims was the reason. That some believe that Ellis literally NUKED his entire hard drive in a "delete everything" panic, because of one of the cases of his whoring around catching up to him as there was a Zoepost type incident where one of Ellis's lovers got caught by her boyfriend and threatened to go public, leading to Ellis going to ground for a couple of months and rumors of him cashing in numerous favors with Rich Johnston and others in the comic press/message boards to bury the story. The boyfriend claimed to have proof that Ellis was having cybersex with his girlfriend, leading to some to speculate that Ellis believed his computer had been compromised to record him jerking off on camera and asking the woman in question to show tits/masturbate too and destroyed his hard drive and everything in it in a panic state that kept him from backing up his shit, which is kind of silly and stupid if it's true given how tech savy Ellis presented himself. But the boyfriend vanished after making his initial accusation, so a lot of people don't put much stock into that scenario and chalk up Ellis's disappearance as "coincidence".

Others have speculated that Ellis might have gotten involved with an underaged groupie, which led to a hasty destruction of his computer once he found out he was sexting/camming with a minor. Alternatively, some have speculated that Ellis just didn't want to finish New Universal and the other stories and projects that were left unresolved/unfinished and used an unrelated computer hard drive crash as his go-to excuse for abandoning said books unfinished. It's that one. He had far too many plates spinning at once, had one of his little meltdowns, and it all came crashing to the floor. Prior to that instance every couple of years he'd have a "major health crisis" (i.e. a funk of whisky and self-loathing) and whatever he was working on would go on hiatus for a few months until he got over it. This time there was just too much to pick up after he dried out so he just cut most of it loose and blamed his computer for eating his homework.

He is far from being finished. Ellis will still get work through Image and will likely get ghost writing work too. He is nothing next to John Roc Upchurch, who was in jail for beating up his wife, and she accused him of rape, various other form of abuse, and being a deadbeat father to his children. Yet Image happily publishes Upchurch's book about a wrongly accused and misunderstood protagonist who is out for revenge. Image also did not cut ties Kurtis Weibe when Tess Fowler started hurling accusations his way.
