Here comes Jim Lee to explain that everything is fine: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/h...-are-still-business-publishing-comics-1307413

My highlight:

And we’ve gotten some tremendous numbers on some of recent books. We’re back to press on the Joker War storyline that has been running in Batman. Multiple printings on that. In fact, every issue since its launch has gone up in numbers and you know how hard that is. Usually when you launch, you start big and the numbers go down. But here it’s climbing issue to issue. We got our numbers for Three Jokers and the first issue sold over 300,000 copies. And that’s an $8 book. That’s a gigantic number for having new distribution.

Joker sells, imagine that.

He got a demotion, his assistant was shown the door, one third of the editorial staff are now Ronin eating Ramen (if they weren't doing that before?), and a passable cosplay of MacBeth's three witches is now running the show at DC Comics. Can't wait til they bring Doctor Disrespect's shadow in to really get the ball rolling.

Kiwi imposters Glenn and Dickard are livestreaming in twenty minutes.

Tonight's stream will follow up on last weeks with a closer examination of the trainwreck of an individual that is Liam Gray (@Tyne) and highlighting the deep lore of Sketch Therapy, who is arguably one of Comicsgate's most interesting figures.

Last weeks stream was quite entertaining with an in depth look at some of Liam Grays more cowish behavior and a special guest interview with the one and only Spirit Junior of Weeb Wars fame. In case any kiwis missed it I will link it below.

EDIT: They boomered the stream, replaced the old link.

He's still got a job though.

I bet he still has a mortgage too.

What else can anyone expect other then "Yassa Massa!"

The audience they're trying to court already gets what they want from anime and manga. Nothing they put out is ever going to be anywhere near as successful, popular, or good as My Hero Academia or Demon Slayer.

Has anybody in the American comic industry even tried to pull their heads out of their asses long enough to ask "What are Japan & Europe doing right that we're doing wrong?"

SJWs fucking hate manga with a passion and are pissy as fuck that they have't 100% hijacked it the same way they now control nearly all of the major US anime dub studios (like Funimation).

Also Eurocomics leading publisher Humanoids basically hired Grant Morrison, who's tenure on Heavy Metal was a disaster (due to them only wanting his name and basically not giving him any actual power over the content of Heavy Metal). Though given that one of Morrison's first acts was to hire Mark Waid as chief gatekeeper at the company and Waid hiring his ex (Devin Grayson) to keep her silent while he was being sued and a bunch of SJW anti-comicsgators to do new books, who could blame them. Because unless you are from the UK (and have been published/currently being published by Rebellion/2000AD), no one gives a shit about you working in Euro comic industry unless you are an old fart who used to be a big name and who's classic work they want to reprint in the US as part of a vanity imprint of "important" works.

As for Kelly Sue DeConnick; I wonder if her "leaving" has anything do to with Andy Khouri being fired, since it's been alleged that DeConnick only got the Aquaman gig BECAUSE of Khouri as far as him getting her the job in exchange for getting Matt to work for DC (a deal that produced only one project, a Jimmy Olsen mini, that none the less saved Khouri from getting fired when he destroyed the Vertigo brand).

If you liked Mighty Morphin Power Rangers try Go Go Power Rangers. It's pretty damn interesting. The main book is good but I just like the Go Go books better. Shattered Grid is a pretty cool story if you like alternate future stuff.

Is there a comic book recommendation thread? If not, we need one. I'd really be interested in hearing what you all are into at the moment.

The Power Rangers comics sucks, as they are nothing but S1 MMPR/Tommy wank, to the point that they made an evil OC future version of Tommy as the main villain that EVERYTHING revolves around.

Let's see... Dan Bloody Abnett wrote a ton of fan favourite novels for Games Workshop, while Bendis is a failed cartoonist and King a guy who wrote a mostly panned novel...
Exactly, I think people here are forgetting that Abnett is a published author and has a lot of eggs in different baskets. He's written probably the most critically and commercially well regarded book series for 40k. And even his half arsed factory made Gaunt novels get treated like big events by GW. That's before we get into the work he does behind the scenes as a consultant on video games and movies. I met Abnett at a Waterstones book signing last year with my Fiancee. He took the time to have a full conversation with us about the state of the comic book industry, He was quite frank with his opinions with us and told us outright that he wishes Marvel and DC would hire more published authors instead of blog writers. He's got a good head on his shoulders. He'll be fine.

Alright, I know this isn't really the place for it, but since it's comic book related, and I figure some positivity would be appreciated: Spider-Man: Life Story is seriously the best comic book I've ever read. I haven't read many, admittedly, but seriously, considering Marvel and how they've been for the past few years, it's genuinely fucking astonishing how good that book is. Seriously, go and read it, even if you're not that big of a Spider-Man buff. Holy shit. All the little details and story beats and fake outs; god, it's so damn good. A lot of the stuff I recognized wasn't even Spider-Man stuff I was super familiar with, but even then the book impressed me regardless of my experience. I can only imagine how satisfying it must have been to read all those issues as they came out.
I thought it was a great attempt at a Coda for Spider-Man. But it was horribly rushed. Each issue ends on a tease for a cool story that never happens. CAPTAIN AMERICA FIGHTS IN NAM! Oops sorry, We're on to the Symbiote suit now.

It needed to be a full series. Give it 3 issues per story at least. It sold well enough and it desperately needed the room to breathe.

Just why is/was Bendis a big deal? I'm not a Marvel reader so I've not come across his stuff there, but just how was anyone excited for his stuff?

Because he was legitimately good at one point. It's easy and "cool" in certain places to be Mr Hindsight and say that he never was, but that's a salty bitter lie and revisionism. Look, when people in this thread talk about cool comics they mean a time period around 1985-2009. thous books were specificity aiming at teens. They were like Goosebumps books: fooling early teens that they are reading something outside of their allowed zone while still being PG. And in early 2000s no one was as good at it as Bendis. You had people being called spazoids in 90s-80s movies, but it was occasional, and was less often in 2000s while Bendis would do that consistently. If there was a party high schoolers would drink and would act horny. Nothing was really shown but using the straight of comics as a medium you can sell the opposite: legs spread further apart + a smirk + a gap between panels makes a 13 year old think he saw something out of the Basic Instinct also a benefit of the fact that there is no subpar TV actors overacting drunk helps make it real. And it wasn't all Whedon-talk ether, early Ultimate SM had decent amount of quiet, restrained scenes too

RCO020.jpg
RCO021.jpg

This was a goldmine in 2000s. A cheap PG Tarantino impersonator that doesn't suck? That's a license to print money.
And don't forget a lot of Bendis' work ended up in every Spider-Man movie. Usually high school stuff because classic Spider-Man really hits the stride only in college and the school part is lame. So, Oscorp school trip, Peter beats a bully character after which Ben is disappointed from Raimi movies - Bendis. Basketball scene, rephrasing of Great power, training on a construction sight from Amazing - Bendis. Annoying basic fat comic-relief friend baiting memes from MCU - Miles Morales era shit-Bendis.

Bends really shouldn't be shrugged off as a complete hack. Because he might just be a miniature version of the recent years of comicbook industry. Once simple but clever, aiming at action loving teens with it's edge now turned into trying to hard to be artsy and smart family friendly soccer mom.

my knowledgue of ultimate marvel isnt great but wasnt killing peter parker the death blow for the franchise after decimation crippled it?

+1 to Bendis actually being decent back in the day, when he actually tried. He can put out decent work, but his flaws and writing crutches have become more obvious over the years. Instead of improving, he has stagnated. (Dialogue is a big one. Keep tally of how many times he has groups of 2-3 characters finish each others jokes. It works for jokester characters, but when Clark, Lois, and John start doing it, it is completely out of place.)

Ultimate Spider-Man is usually seen as his gold standard, but many seem to forget that issues 60-89 were pretty damn medicore. (Only the Black Cat introduction and hilarious fallout had any real quality.) It wasn't untill the Ultimate Clone Saga that things picked up again.

IMO the series was begging for a MJ gets superpowers and her and Peter work together as a couple arc(s). It would have been an excellent character growth opportunity. Have MJ realize firsthand everything Peter goes through on a regular basis. Bendis even teased it a few times. Cue the MJ OZ infection that went nowhere. Also, cue the really short Kitty Pryde dating period. (Which in hindsight was really fucking creepy now that we know Pryde is his waifu. Especially once he had her and his self insert character Kong start dating.) Also, Annual 3 really ticked off a lot of people with the standard, "We won't have sex till we're ready" drivel. It completely ignores everything they had been through and that the relationship had reached the point long ago where it was bizarre they weren't having sex.

Ultimate Universe was doing good sales, often even better than "main" Marvel universe and at some point Marvel figured that it doesn't really make sense to have both of them competing, in essence, for same market. So what happened was that some ideas were moved from Ultimate Universe to main universe (I would be surprised if high Ultimate Spider-Man sales weren't used as an argument for why OMD should be done) and Marvel started "experimenting" in Ultimate Universe.

Ultimate Peter Parker dying was one of such experiments and I wouldn't say that it was a death blow for that universe since many dumber things happened. If anything, considering that Miles Morales still has some traction, you could probably make an argument that it was one few "experiments" that actually ended up working. Other one would probably be Hickman's run that kinda lead to his later work in main Marvel universe and his big events.

More bull from Donal about paying me what I'm owed. Him stealing my writing credit and him refusing to show me the merchandise numbers are exactly why I think he's going to rig the accounting to not pay me.

This first screenshot is from Ian at Crypto Fashion. I recently told him Donal hadn't paid me my 50% I'm owed for the merchandise sold on the website, so he said he'd send Donal the numbers so Donal could show me them and pay me.
Fgk8DQwy.jpg

Then I get this from Donal. The documents created SPECIFICALLY TO BE SHOWN TO ME, Donal claims I have no right to see.
8adnpVPq.jpg

This is why I'm concerned about being paid for the campaign. He says he'll credit me as writer, then he lies and steals my writing credit and puts me as "co plotter". Then CryptoFashion makes a document for him SPECIFICALLY TO SHOW ME, and he is refusing.

The Power Rangers comics sucks, as they are nothing but S1 MMPR/Tommy wank, to the point that they made an evil OC future version of Tommy as the main villain that EVERYTHING revolves around.
Grant Morrison for the most part sucks. I know he has tons of fans and people fawn all over him but he used heavy metal to give big industry names an outlet for their pet projects no one else would touch.
It was a stark deviation from HM of the 80's where the readership was an adult audience and they promoted a lot of adult books. Under Morrison it definitely became more PC and far less risque.
You'll see more T&A in Comicsgate books than modern heavy metal. At one point [I think with Tim Seeley] they tried printing a parody version of the magazine.
How does a magazine that traditionally prints way outside the rules of comics and has relatively low readership make a parody of itself?
Grant Morrison ruined classic Heavy Metal. Gone are the days of actual "dangerous content" and truly "metal" comics and in with SJW pet projects from people who used to like the hard-core stuff HM printed back in the day but are way too scared to do it themselves.

Heavy Metal under Morrison became a trooned out version of itself, scared to take risks on new talent and unwilling to print anything other than basic bitch short comics far from the days of psychedelic and adult content that made them famous.
I quit reading the magazine. The $12 bucks they were asking became too much for what amounts to a watered down Shirley temple for what used to be straight 18 year scotch.

I have collected almost every issue of HM ever printed so I'd like to think I know what I'm talking about.
They have always done multiple covers mostly because Heavy Metal readers weren't your average comic reader and tended to order their books through mail-in order forms and not from stores.
Hiring retards like Waid, Cates, and various faggots killed the spirit of the mag. Damned shame.
Cates especially. FFFUUUUUCCCCK Donny Cates.

The outrage there'd be if he did this to Cecil. @FROG and CG would have 86,000 hours worth of streams denouncing Donal and calling him out, there'd be a GoFundMe, everyone would care if this happened on Cash Grab. But because I'm Nasser, I'm allowed to have my writing credit stolen, my merchandise stolen, my profits stolen.

Khouri will either go to Image, IDW, or (god help us) Marvel. Either that or he'll end up working for one of the major anti-life SJW websites or create a brand new one, since he is SJW royalty among that sect and if not getting a major position at one of those sites, could start his own website and get his old cronie crew from Comic Alliance together to set up a new website to spew the Anti-Life equation. Which is the most likely scenario, as I can only imagine that falling from grace as hard as he has, will make Khouri feel that he has "scores" he need to settle with nerds/comic fans and if Biden wins, he'll probably feel embolden to use his bully pulpit to try and deplatform as many critics of him and his ilk and Comicsgaters as he can deplatform, now that he can't run an official blacklist at a major company.

You would think the Old Guard at Marvel would say "Wait a minute. Wasn't Khouri part of the reason we went into bankruptcy in the first place? Why would we let him back in to screw us over again?"

Nasser, you need to move on. It's your fault for getting involved with an obvious retard like Donal. Brutas the Badass is a stupid idea. Ducktor Satan would’ve been a stupid idea. Leave all this behind and pursue a real career. Invest in the stock market. Stop wasting your time haggling for $60.00.

Nasser, look, I feel for you. I'm someone who does a lot of contract work and I know the frustration that comes when the other side decides to unilaterally "reinterpret" our deal. But surely you're past the point of diminishing returns on continuing to raise a fuss about it. Everybody who would care about you getting screwed over already cares about it, and everybody who doesn't care about it yet probably never will. Maybe it's time to just take your licks, learn a lesson or two about making clear and comprehensive contracts, and move on to your next project.

I challenge you to make your next post in this thread be about hyping up whatever you've got going on next instead of more grousing about DeLay fucking you over.

the $60 is just the merchandise. I have $2,000 to my name, the profits I'm supposed to get ($4,000-10,000 in his own words) are life changing even on the low end.

I don't know what's next. I want to still relaunch Secret Comics Presents, and want to do Trixie Book 2, but production on both have halted because I don't have money for more pages (which getting paid for Brutas would change). An artist has been "working on" a superhero script I wrote since back in January, but he's so slow we have 5 pages and those don't even have the grey tones or letters yet.

I've written a lot of novels and novellas but don't have the money to edit them, format them, or get covers for them.

I'm working on a lot of things I guess but I don't have any money to put them out. Which, again, being paid for Brutas even on the low end would change big time.

I would say skip paying for an editor. It's just a meme that other self published authors repeat. Set the story aside for a month or two then come back to it and you'll have just as much insight as an editor. Formatting you can learn yourself.
