Command & Conquer: Remastered - Guess who's back?

There is Renegade X.

C&C Renegade was such an underappreciated game.
Renegade was fun as hell, but I kinda wish they used the Tiberium Sun era units instead Tiberium Dawn. The more technological stuff appealed to me greater than just "Oh hey it's modern day but there's some wacky super resource here too" stuff.

The Republic Commando thing I was talking about however, is a cancelled tactical FPS called Tiberium, which was set during the Third Tiberium War between GDI, Nod and the Scrin. I fucking LOVE Tiberium Wars, and having an FPS set during the events of that game sounded awesome as hell; you were gonna play as a Commando again, but obviously with some more high tech gear than Renegade. You could boost in any direction, your gun could be modified so that it fired different ammo types (Again, like Republic Commando), and you could also command and order in droves of troopers and vehicles to help you out with the firefights against both the Scrin and Nod forces present.

This video describes a lot more stuff I left out for TLDR's sake, but basically EA canned it because it "Didn't meet up with EA's standards", which is EA speak for "It was too unique and interesting to sell well enough by EA's standards". To this day I curse EA for fucking us over with this potentially golden CNC experience; it looked atmospheric, fun and VERY intense. A big fucking shame it never got released, if you ask me.

I still have the Game Informer issue about Tiberium.

Very promising even though I'm more towards RA2. So far it ticks the right stuff that makes me interested.

Just hope it won't turn into another Blizzard-like shitfest.

Also making a game about the religion of peace in the current year.
Oh yeah, how could I forget the austere Islamic scholars that make up one of the major factions of the game, who, among several things, drives a Truck of Peace through a crowd of civilians during a parade in Beijing? I can see that going so well with the Islamophilia crowd.

The game is getting a physical collector's release (and super-dee-duper physical collection) courtesy of Limited Run Games alongside the Steam release. They look quite nice, and even as a man who was horrifically burned by their outstandingly fucking terrible Silver Case release I have to admit their PC sets have gotten very good over time.

It's somewhat reassuring to see EA give the greenlight to a made-to-order collection like this, given their recent practice of simply shitting out anything that doesn't say Star Wars or Battlefield onto digital storefronts without any real merchandise or physical releases. Everything about this collection is giving me good vibes I haven't gotten from a large publisher in a very long time. Dare I say it gives me a little hope that EA may begin handling their classic properties with a little more care going forward. I can't wait to be disappointed.

Ah, the 2000s, when political correctness took a wonderful holiday.

While I was too young to play the OG Tiberium dawn this does have me cautiously excited. If EA doesn't fuck it up hopefully we can see some 'remasters' of RA 2 and Tiberium Sun, the best Tiberium game in my opinion. If they sell really well (give me the optimistic tag here) we might just finally get a proper CnC game that isn't the coat-hanger abortion that was Tiberium Twilight. Or EA can take the money and run, which is much more likely.

That trailer mentions they not only include every expansion (sans Sole Survivor for obvious reasons) but also the N64/PSX exclusive maps as well.
That's not as impressive as it sounds, because said maps were already ported to the Windows version by unofficial community patches years ago.
The person who developed said patches, Nyerguds, is among the "community council" mentioned in the trailer, though.

Regarding the remaster, EA making a reworked game in cooperation with original Westwood devs and with modding community oversight always seemed like a "too good to be true" kind of deal to me. It looks very nice, but we'll see if it holds up to the hype.

Looks like the remastered version is getting mod support.
Today we are proud to announce that alongside the launch of the Remastered Collection, Electronic Arts will be releasing the TiberianDawn.dll and RedAlert.dll and their corresponding source code under the GPL version 3.0 license. This is a key moment for Electronic Arts, the C&C community, and the gaming industry, as we believe this will be one of the first major RTS franchises to open source their source code under the GPL. It’s worth noting this initiative is the direct result of a collaboration between some of the community council members and our teams at EA. After discussing with the council members, we made the decision to go with the GPL license to ensure compatibility with projects like CnCNet and Open RA. Our goal was to deliver the source code in a way that would be truly beneficial for the community, and we hope this will enable amazing community projects for years to come.

So, what does it mean for Mod Support within the Remastered Collection? Along with the inclusion of a new Map Editor, these open-source DLLs should assist users to design maps, create custom units, replace art, alter gameplay logic, and edit data. The community council has already been playing with the source code and are posting some fun experiments in our Discord channel. But to showcase a tangible example of what you can do with the software, Petroglyph has actually created a new modded unit to play with. So we asked a fun question - “What would the Brotherhood of Nod do if they captured the Mammoth Tank?” Well, one guess is they’d replace the turret with a giant artillery cannon and have it fire tactical nukes! Thus the Nuke Tank was born. This is a unit which is fully playable in the game via a mod (seen in the screenshot above), and we hope to have it ready to play and serve as a learning example when the game launches.

For Steam players, we’re utilizing the Steam Workshop for sharing both maps and mods. Players can subscribe to maps and mods directly in the game’s Community Hub within Steam, or utilize in-game menus to browse / download content as well. Once you’re in the game, you may navigate to the Options / Mods tab where you can then activate the mod. We’re aiming to put together further documentation on uploading content and the entire UGC process around the launch window.

Overall, we are incredibly excited to see what the community creates over the coming months. We anticipate some fantastic content for the Remastered Collection itself, some great updates in current community projects as they incorporate the source code, and perhaps we’ll even see some new RTS projects now made possible with the source code under the GPL. One final note we want to emphasize - we’ve done our best to bug fix and prepare these UGC systems for launch, but we have no doubt that once thousands of you begin creating and sharing content, some quirks will be discovered. Please continue to share your experience once the game launches, and let us know how we can continue to improve these tools for your benefit.

The Command & Conquer Remastered Collection will be available June 5 worldwide on PC. Comprised of Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn, Command & Conquer: Red Alert and their three expansion packs - Covert Ops, Counterstrike and The Aftermath - the Command & Conquer Remastered Collection is a passion project between EA, some of the original Westwood Studios team members at Petroglyph, and Lemon Sky Studios.

A detailed FAQ page for C&C mods is here.

EA doing penance? Not likely. But hey, I'll be interested to see what people come up with.

I would hate to be the guy running OpenRA now.

Considering they are opensourcing the remastered engine so it can be cross compatible with OpenRA, I would figure that to be quite the opposite.

This remastered version of the original games is effectively giving the open-source community a long, loving blowjob, something I'm more than a little stunned EA is cool with allowing.

I think some CnC fans are getting a bit too hyped up over this, I expect purist fans to despise the QoL changes (a few times I looked up unit que mods for CnC1 and fans argued against it, because skill), while the average gamer will struggle with the dated balance/path finding, and if Ptero sticks to its old habits they'll patch the game once then move on immediately.
