Command & Conquer: Remastered - Guess who's back?

Considering they are opensourcing the remastered engine so it can be cross compatible with OpenRA, I would figure that to be quite the opposite.

This remastered version of the original games is effectively giving the open-source community a long, loving blowjob, something I'm more than a little stunned EA is cool with allowing.

I think EA finally realized "lets make SOME money rather then NO Money from this IP we're not doing anything with". Now if any one wants to play a C&C game they'll get this remastered, maybe add in some workshop support, and get a ton of good will while the super dedicated actually do the work for EA (for free).

The games are just fine the way they are and do not need to be remade or remastered. Just re-release them and call it a day.

The C&C First Decade release was pretty good. They should re-release that.

They kinda already have, on Origin at least. They released the first 17 games for about $20. Of course, the downside to that is that it's on Origin and not a respectable platform like GOG or Steam.

Only the stuff before Renegade really needs a remaster. The following run like utter shit on modern systems or have serious problems running well if they do run:

C&C Tiberian Dawn/Sun (including expansions)
C&C Red Alert (1 and 2, all expansions included)

Renegade and Generals I've gotten to run mostly fine though.

I think it is okay to make the games run better on newer systems.

But when you say "remaster" that means a lot more than simply making the game compliant with a new OS. They start adding dreaded "quality of life" improvements, which are entirely unnecessary.

Partially disagree. If they make those entirely optional and let you play in classic mode just being modern system compliant, sweet. If not, then yeah.

Tiberian Sun and RA2 really just need some resolution tweaks and modern system compliance, possibly cleaned up netcode and mod support, but otherwise, they were good as they were when they released.

I'm lazy so I would pay a one time fee so the old games get on steam and open-sourced so its easy to add stuff in through the steam workshop.

I got my preorder and looking forward into it. I was never huge fan of the first 2 games and never beat any of them. I like the pacing of the first C&C, the clunky FMV's but the gameplay was never my kink. Frankly, i preferred Bliizard's RTS at some point over lagging Tiberian Sun and later iterations of C&C franchise. Anybody who played TS or RA2 over the internet knows the pain of 4v4 battles. It's laggy, atrocious experience.

Generals and ZH are notoriously unstable on modern systems, even to the point of alt-tabbing frequently causing everything to explode. I so hope to god they get updated and with proper mod support.

I'm not expecting much, but I see your point. I doubt this will turn out to be a Warcraft III reforged disaster.

I hope it's either the Age of Empires DE kind of situation, or the W3 Reforged situation.
Just being okay or meh won't do, this is 2020.

I needed to track down some fan-made DLL wrapper to make Red Alert 2, First Decade release, run on Win 10 without freezing 10 seconds into the first mission.
Red Alert 1, Tiberian Dawn and Tiberian Sun I could just grab modern compatible versions from CNC.Net.
But EA never dd that for Red Alert 2 for reason.
I don't even want fancy remasters of the old CnC games.
Just some nice rereleases that don't need to be jerry-rigged and coaxed into working on modern hardware.

Agreed. My definition of remaster falls into the category of "has OPTIONAL quality of life and graphical enhancements, but mostly makes it modern hardware compliant without a lot of problems".

CNC Remastered is available for preloading on Steam now, and you guys should definitely check out the preview video Steam has with Joe Kucan, it's been around over twenty years and man looks like he hasn't aged a day. He's definitely still got the chops to be Kane.
