these a good idea if you already have a degree? i got a bachelor of science in cs last year and already have a software dev job but i'm considering getting a certificate or two in something like web development or computer networking at the local community college to improve my chances of getting a higher-paying job

It really depends. A lot of the time, certs are for the barely literate pakis so our globohomo tech sector has something to show the government when requesting their H1Bs.

Regardless, I'd skip the actual school part. If you are half decent at your job, you could do it all from the book. If you can get a real job, do it and find out what else they need or are currently farming out. See if they'll pay for your certs.

I'm rushing to a 2 pm meeting, so I'll edit this post later.

I would either go for a CompTIA certification route or a Microsoft certification route.

CompTIA: https://www.comptia.org/certifications

Microsoft: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/learn/certifications/browse/

Those classes you can usually buy on Udemy for $12-$15 and then the exams are usually $100-$200.

I'll edit this post later.
haven't heard of microsoft certs but i'm pretty sure comptia certs are just for IT, which is a similar-but-entirely-different career path. i want something to get me further in my current field especially cuz software dev is comfy af

i also got a 331 on the GRE with a perfect quant right before the scamdemic broke out so i could do a master's too

IT and development are starting to blend together more and more. I've seen a lot of push for DevOps type stuff lately.

Plus, at least the CompTIA path could get you to a Linux+ cert which could open up a few options.

Before you lay down the time and effort and money to get a certificate or degree, make sure to thoroughly create a plan of exactly what you plan to do with it. Is it because there is a specific company you want to work for? Call their HR department and ask what certs the people they hired have. Is it a new field for you? Call the school and ask them about post-graduate placement. If they don't want to tell you that's a red flag.

Basically, figure out exactly and specifically what you would do with a cert and find out how much money you can get out of it.
