"The championship was held late last month in Finland, and about 200 participants -- mostly young women -- competed in various events such as show jumping and dressage, all while riding their hobbyhorses"
"The hobbyhorse craze is reportedly exploding in Finland, with more than 10,000 youths involved in the sport."
APR 30, 2017, mashable;
"Hobby-horsing also has a strong element of female empowerment, some riders say. Young girls are building their own scene and setting their own terms, free of strict standards and the scrutiny of official committees. "No boys are coming and saying what we need to do, or bossing around," Alisa Aarniomaki, 20, told the AP. "I think hobby-horsing has a feministic agenda.""
there is even a documentary about this subculture:
Hobbyhorse Revolution is a joyful and adventurous film in the interface between reality and imagination. It is a portrait of a hobby which defies categories and of young people who are brave and true to themselves.
