I figured it would be good to have a thread for discussion of concealment skills separate from the EDC thread which is essentially gear lists.

Concealing a firearm effectively on your person requires some degree of skill combined with proper equipment. I have been carrying concealed for over a decade in a hot climate and in somewhat non permissive environments. I’ve gone through a few different methods of carry and lots of different equipment, and have a lot of experience to share that can hopefully help others shorten the learning period.

The key thing to consider is where on your body you are willing to position the gun as this will affect gear choices such as belts, holsters, and cover garments.

Appendix Carry:

This positions the gun in front of your hips usually near the spot where your groin meets your thigh.

This is probably the best position for drawing, and concealment and really easy to carry a full size gun with an optic.

You want a holster with a wedge feature to move the muzzle end away from your body and a camming feature to rotate the grip towards your body for optimum concealment.

Strongside:

This positions the gun on your hip, or slightly behind your hip.

This position provides a very good draw, but can be challenging to effectively conceal larger guns and/ or guns with optics.

The same holster features as appendix carry are desirable for optimal concealment.

Pocket Carry:

Gun position is self explanatory.

The draw from this position will vary greatly depending on size of gun and clothing, but generally not as fast as Appendix or strongside. Generally limits the size of gun significantly. Even with smaller guns it can be pretty obvious what is in your pocket if your shirt doesn’t hang low enough.

It’s very important to choose a holster that stays in your pocket, and doesn’t come out with the gun when you draw it. Also important that your gun doesn’t want to get stuck in your pocket which will be affected by both the shape of the gun and the size and shape of your pocket.

Shoulder holster:

Gun position is in your armpit.

Slower draw times and requires a button down shirt for easy access.

I don’t really have any personal experience with these rigs, but have heard they are very comfortable.

Ankle carry:

Gun is strapped to your ankle. Popular position for a backup gun, but accessing the gun quickly is obviously an issue.

Small of back carry:

Gun is positioned at the base of spine.

There is a concern for spinal injury with this carry position. I’ve not actually tried it, but it doesn’t seem comfortable.

Off body carry:

Fanny packs, backpacks, etc:

So many variables with this one, but generally slower to access than on body carry.

Equipment:

Once you have chosen your carry position, you will want a quality belt if you are attaching a holster to it. You want the belt to resist sagging but not be so stiff that it doesn’t conform to your body. You will want to wear the belt tight enough that it activates the concealment features of your holster.

For your holster you want a quality one that fits your gun well. Kydex is more resistant to moisture than leather, and with leather you have to keep an eye on where it covers the trigger to make sure it’s not squeezing together and putting rearward pressure on the trigger when reholstering.

For your firearm you should be carrying the best gun you can conceal. Something you can shoot reasonably well and train with regularly. It does no good to shoot a full size gun at the range, and then carry a micro gun for defense of you or your loved ones. I recommend a Glock 19 sized gun as a minimum. It is not unreasonable to conceal in most circumstances and has enough real estate to get a good purchase on for performance shooting.

I recommend avoiding “carry rotations” and “seasonal carry” choices. Let’s be real, most of us don’t have the time or resources to maintain our highest level of proficiency across multiple pistols.

When I read appendix carry I thought in my sleepridden state to somehow put it inside your appendix and that the rest of the post would be about ways of concealing a gun inside your body.

op it's okay. we know you're fat. that's the way you *actually* conceal your guns.

I carry in the 4-5:00 position. Feels better than 6:00 and I'm not worried about my spine if I fall. I usually forget I'm wearing it outside of sliding in and out of car seats. I usually adjust it the first time I get into a car on a given day and then don't have to worry about it until I remove it in the evening

Minor printing but I carry a sub-compact (GX4 TORO with 407k) and wear baggy shirts so it doesn't stand out too much, a full size would probably look pretty dumb

A full size in that position is doable but having a holster that rotates the grip enough and wearing the right fit of shirt is critical.

Shoulder holsters are comfy and aesthetic as fuck. They’re slow to draw and not good for physical confrontations.

Cool for larping as a detective and working all day at a desk as a real detective. Shit for everything else.

I pocket carry, because I know I will probably never need to use my gun, but I don't want when I need to use it be the day I decided it was too uncomforable to carry it. This does come with the disadvantage of not being able to carry a full size, but a trade I am willing to make. In the rare occurence of a car jacking where I live, I would probably have enough spacial awareness to see it coming and have time to draw.

I did experiment with small of back carry, but it was uncomfortable to drive with, and has the same drawback when seated.

I normally carry my G19 at a 2-3 o'clock position with a spare mag or two in my fanny pack. That's my daily carry.

If I'm going out somewhere nice that calls for nicer clothing, I carry my S&W 19-3 at a 5 o'clock in a cloak tuck with a few speedloaders in my coat pocket (.38 SP+P, older revolver and I want it to be around for a long time). That revolver had target grips and hurt the shit out of my back when sitting down, so I got rubber molded grips for it. Don't even know it's there most of the time.

People talk shit about them, but I really like my Alien Gear holsters. I have a friend who recently got their duty level holster and he really likes it, I'd like to pick one up for LARPing purposes.

I have OWB holsters for both, which I will use because I live in a state (and an area of that state) that open carry is perfectly fine and no one has said anything to me about it.

EDIT: Printing is a myth, the only people who notice are other people who are carrying.

buy the smallest snub nose revolver you can find and shove it up your asshole
Wish I would have read this sooner...

Here's my everyday ass-carry piece:

I guess I got some bad advice.

At first, it took some blood, sweat, and tears to properly conceal it, but I thought that was nornal and just part of "the process." 😕

The PHLster Floodlight 2 is a fantastic holster if you're carrying a medium or full-sized handgun. It's pretty universal, with pressure retention on the flashlight rather than the gun. I believe in always having a light on my gun, and it's hard to find a quality holster that is made for your gun and accommodates a light, unless you carry a G19 or something else super common. Been using it for years (get the hook and loop fasteners or metal, do not use a clip-on style holster) and love my Floodlight 1. They sell them for the Surefire X300 and the Streamlight TLR-1. Normally universal holsters are a horrible idea but the PHLster is legit. Low profile, customizable retention level, and lets you keep a light on a larger gun without printing like a madman.

I ran a floodlight for years. It’s a great holster.

Ever since streamlight came out with the TLR7 HLX I’ve switched to a Tenicor holster for that light. More output than the x300U in a smaller package.
