If you've never had someone very close develop a severe mental illness or drug addiction (often together), it has a way of callousing you. You want them to be safe, you listen to their never ending cries for attention, but you've heard it a hundred times before and ultimately it's pointless. It's possible that they're horrible people, however, they just strike me as parents who realized that their son is severely mentally ill and will never be the normal, happy man that they envisioned 2X years ago.

Oh, idk, Day of the Locust was a book all about the hideously ugly and very common side of fame and the movie industry in LA in the 1930’s. Plenty people have been aware of how debased and craven the fame machine of Hollywood since it’s inception and written about it or criticized it.

The new element is social media fame and basically turning their lives into a ongoing marketing campaign and that anyone with a mobile phone can try to do it. Every moment of their lives now has to be viewed as “potential content” and it’s really twisted and makes people exploit themselves for a few clicks.

I think that the kids being born this decade will completely reject the commodification of their private lives for consumption and look at this era with contempt and pity.

Even if they did check in on him, what difference would it have made? Mentally ill people (especially those with psychotic disorders) are the last to listen to advice. The only thing you can do is set clear boundaries and stick to them. Many parents fall into the codependency trap in which they enable their child's illness in an effort to be caring. I'm sure they love their son, and would do anything to make him well again. But one must, at some point, step back and take care of oneself too.

People do place an inhuman amount of expectation on the parents of disabled kids. They are human too, and there are limits to what can be done. Connor is an adult man. His psychosis seems to be mainly in the form of delusions. This means he can function relatively well. He's not a risk to anyone but himself. There's not much anybody can do, other than committing him permanently.
