I was wondering if there are other old console and computer collectors on the forum. Collectors who I'm competing with when rare games appear on Ebay. This is what I have in order of oldest first:

2 x Atari 2600. One little black and silver one and one old black and wood one from the 1970s
ZX Spectrum 48k
Nintendo ES, Mario 3 pack.
Atari 520 STE.
Sega Megadrive with Master System converter.
3 x SNES. 2 x UK PAL and 1 US NTSC. Anyone from the PAL region who's played an NTSC SNES will know why it's an essential purchase.
Super Wildcard (best invention ever)
Amiga A1200.
Nintendo 64
Gameboy Advance SP.
PS Double
Gamecube with Gameboy player.
2 x DS, one lite and one DSiXL.
PS Triple.

When I started getting into collecting my plan was to have at least 20 good games for the cartridge systems. I only have about 15 good NES games. I have: Mario 1,2 and 3. Megaman 1,2 and 4. Bubble Bobble, Black Manta, Turtles (the good one, not the poor arcade conversion), Double Dragon 2, Duck Tales, Power Blade, Digger T Rock, Super Off Road and Techmo World Wrestling (best wrestling game ever.

As you can see I'm lacking a bit in my NES collection can anyone recommend any good ones that I might be missing? And tell us what you've got to play games on.

In regards to a collection that I have, I own: A Sega Genesis, a PS2, a PS3, N64, NES, and a Game Cube. As for games, I'm too lazy to list that.

I only ever own 3 consoles due to space.

An original Xbox, a PS3 and a Wii.

The former and the latter are hacked. Which wasn't as hard as I thought it'd be.

PC masterrace reporting in.

Over the years I've had NES,SNES, PS1,PS2,PS3,Xbox,Xbox360,Gameboy Color, and Gameboy Advance, but they've been sold overtime and now I don't have any consoles. I just emulate PS1/PS2/NES/SNES/N64/DS games on my computer.

I was somewhat of a collector a few years ago when I had a lot more disposable income and my circumstances were better, but even then, it was more that I was buying stuff that I wanted in the years prior, but couldn't afford before I was working.

Noteworthy things include.
for my Japanese Saturn, all in excellent condition.
Radiant Silvergun,
Panzer Dragoon Saga (pal)
Metal Slug with ram cart,
Dragon Force (pal)
Shining Force III (pal)
Shining Force III parts 2, 3, and the premium disc
Shining, the Holy Ark, (pal)
Street Fighter Zero 3
X-Men vs Streetfighter
Vampire Saviour
Guardian Heroes (pal)
There are others, but these are probably the best.

I have various things for other consoles like my 50/60 hz switched SNES.
Fully boxed, almost perfect condition Chrono Trigger (us)
Literally perfect condition Links Awakening (pal)
Paper Mario, Thousand Year Door on the Gamecube (pal)
Also the more recent Wii stuff that had limited print runs then disappeared and promptly became collectors items. I purchased all of these at retail for well below the rrp.
Xenoblade Chronicles, Metroid Prime trilogy, The last story, collectors edition.

There's other bits and bobs I have, but these are the best. In general, I'm a bit of a sperg when it comes to gaming, but I have my purchase instincts well under control. there's no point buying stuff just for the sake of buying it.

How much did you pay for the 50/60Hz switch? I live just outside Glasgow and there used to be a shop in the centre of Glasgow called Solid Gold Exchange Club who would fit the switch for £30. They had Super Streetfighter on import set up so we hung about and played that whilst the fitted the switch and it only took about half an hour.

I didn't acquire my Super Wildcard until after games stopped being produced for the SNES. I wish I had it when I first saw it for sale at the Barras market in Glasgow. You used to be able to get Amiga and ST pirates for £3 a pop and they also had a stall for the SNES discs at £3 each too. The owner of the Wild Card before me had bought loads of shitty sports games for it but I took it round to some friends houses and copied their games. It works as a converter too. I copied my mate's Japanese Castlevania 4, the US and PAL versions had been heavily censored.

@ Surtur, Pickle Man and Anchuent Christory: That's some awesome collections you have there.

Solid Gold games, jesus fuck, that brings back memories! Are we talking the late nineties here? they were a franchise that had stores over Scotland, then pretty much disappeared?
These shops had a massive influence on my gaming habits because they were like an old school record store where you'd go in and just browse through whatever they happened to have that day. On a good day you could stumble across some absolute belters that you'd never see again. It was also before the whole rare game thing fully kicked off, so everything was priced reasonably.

It must have been 1997, and most folk had Playstations by now, I had a second hand MegaDrive I got from a friend (had some awesome games with it) cos we never had much money growing up. So picture me, 15 years old with my months pocket money in my pocket, riding the bus to Perth where the nearest solid gold was. That day, I walked out that store with Dune II, Battle for arakis, Story of Thor and Rocket Knight Adventures! Ha, I even remember the girl behind the counter saying "wow, that's some great games you've got there" I don't think they cost me more than £25.
Don't get me wrong, Ebay's awesome, but you just don't get that kind of shopping/browsing/discovery experience anymore. We're worse off without it.

I eventually traded the whole lot in (sob) and got a Saturn in 1998 and a wee bit later I got my first job so I was able to afford to buy games more regularly. Then I was a poor student and had to do without for a while, but when you have Radiant Silvergun, Shining Force III and Guardian Heroes on your shelf, who cares!
It was in the early 2000's when I'd moved out and had a better (but still shit) job that I spent a year or so collecting stuff I'd missed out on.

I don't remember how much the SNES was, I actually bought it on Ebay with the switches preinstalled about ten or eleven years ago.

Always wanted to get a turbographx but I really don't know where to start. I know there the main system, a CD add on, and a handheld version of it but there also like a shit load of different variations of those three too.

Where are you from? I'm from Paisley and we only ever had one decent import shop which was Computer Genius on New Street. That shop had a Jap Mega Drive way before it was released here and one quiet day they let us have a shot and we got to play one of the Thunderforce games and Rambo 3. My mate got his SNES on the day it was released here (around Spring 1992) and the first game he bought for it was SF2 which cost £60 and £20 for the converter (it was a US import) £80 for the lot was pretty good considering that at the time some of the importers advertising in Mean Machines wanted £100 and that was before the cost of your converter.

Paisley was quite a handy town to live in then because it was only 10 minutes on the train to Glasgow and there were some good importers there. G Force on Union Street was quite popular but there was a really great wee import shop in the Savoy Centre that we used to visit quite often. I got my Jap Final Fight there with its great box art and fully uncensored (I couldn't believe they took the girls Roxy and Poison out the western releases).

It was around 1993 (Super Streetfighter was available on import at the time) we took the SNES up to the Solid Gold Exchange Club for its 50/60Hz switch. My mate's cousin had a US SNES and after trying out SF2 in all its 60Hz glory the PAL release was horrendous and pretty unplayable.

Mean Machines was an awesome magazine and if they highly rated a game then it was a game you must have. They fucked up by splitting it in to individual Sega and Nintendo magazines (and messed up the format) that really bugged me because I had both Sega and Nintendo systems. I started buying Super Play and on the strength of one of their reviews I bought Bart's Nightmare (rated 92%). I'd saved for ages the £45 for a new game and Bart's Nightmare was total shit. I took it up to Glasgow the next week and swapped it for Dino City, I think Mean Machines would have gave Bart's Nightmare a score in the 70s.

I know what you mean about Ebay. I'm registered with Retro Gamer Magazine's message forum and when buying rare stuff on Ebay you are up against guys from there who have serious buying power so getting a good price on anything now is pretty rare.

Do you remember when Gamestation first opened up? My local Gamestation had a great selection of old cartridges but when Game took it over they ruined a great wee chain.

If you can get a US SNES for a decent price you should snap it up. Remember to keep a good quality CRT telly for it though, old console games look really shitty on modern tellys.

Starting from oldest to newest, the consoles I own are:
  • Nintendo 64
  • Nintendo GameCube
  • Gameboy Advance SP
  • Nintendo DS (original model)
  • Wii
  • Wii U
I've considered getting a Super Nintendo, a Playstation 2 and an Xbox 360 at various points in the past, but my lack of space and money means that I couldn't exactly afford to add them to my collection.

You seem to like your Nintendo systems, I would seriously recommend a SNES (NTSC if possible). To this day the SNES is the best console I've ever owned and the best games are all pretty cheap these days. I remember the days of waiting on games to load and it wasn't fun, I've always felt that disc gaming was a step backwards. 14 years in to the 21st century and you have to wait for games to load, lend them out to friends and they come back scratched. I loved that the Nintendo 64 was cartridge based and no shelling out for memory cards.

I've been a fan of Nintendo for as long as I can remember, and I also do some PC gaming too. My friend has an NES-SNES combo system that he got last Christmas, and I think it would be a good idea to get one as they are fairly cheap compared to original systems in good condition.
