Console Modding

Just installed a 2TB white label drive into my Original Xbox and it runs great. I don't know what IDE controller the Xbox uses, but I don't think it's capable of anything close to 100/133 speeds. It runs at about 5MB/s which is good enough to load long load time games like Fable in mere seconds. Now that I have the biggest possible drive in the Xbox, I'm going to try my hand at the good ol' 128MB of RAM mod for better XBMC4Xbox support and better emulation. RIP 1.1 RAM donor board that was lost to a leaky clock cap destroying a part of the board.

Always remove clock caps from you 1.0-1.5 boards. 1.6a/b are safe, but it never hurts to check something that old.

Anyone else into modding their consoles in any way?

I broke the tabs out from my SNES to play import games, homebrewed my Wii, and put a firmware thing on my PSP.
Years ago I got a stealth chip for my PSX cheap, but never bothered to put it in because I had another one with a goldfinger.

I considered modding my X-box, but the only thing I have it for is Steel Battalion so meh. I already have computers to computer on.

I have an original Xbox that I've modded. However I have yet to replace the harddrive mostly because I don't see the need to.

Otherwise I've also modded my Wii (which was a lot less time consuming). When I had a PS2 I modded that with freemcboot but I don't have that anymore.

Otherwise I have also run custom firmware on my PSP

I have a PSP 3000 with a 09g mobo so I can't install a permanent CFW. I remember my old PSP 2000 I broke by accident that could to perma CFW and making the pandora battery so it could run... good times.

I can't wait for the PSIO to be ready for full release. I have like 13 PS1 games so they should be able to fit on 1 SD card.

Oh yeah I forgot I put a fliptop on my PStwo. Ended up it was for the previous model so I had to figure out a spare door open sensor, glued a bit of plastic to it to read forever closed. Seems like it worked.

My Wii has the homebrew channel mostly for Pandora's Tower(Before the US release) and Project M. Other then that, I have a FC Twin that's able to play Super Famicom games.

I still need to figure out the homebrew channel on the Wii. I admit it's my fault for not following instructions that well and rushing through said instructions due to wanting to get it done. Softmods like the Xbox I enjoy doing, other times it can get boring.

I wanted to mod my Wii but the risk of losing everything made me give up. I did have cfw on my PSP but the N64 games I wanted to emulate were much too buggy. And it required me to restart the cfw every time my PSP is turned off.

Paid somebody to chip my Saturn back in the day to allow me to play Jap games, but it stopped working after a week or two. I kept having to send it back, and the problem would just keep happening. A few years later after when I was working and had the means to buy stuff online I got myself a sexy white Japanese Saturn and never looked back.
Around the same time, I picked up a pal SNES with a 50/60hz switch and that's pretty cool. Whatever Nintendo's faults are, their hardware's fucking bulletproof so that thing will be around forever.

Was there ever a Saturn cart that did piracy? I had the 4(1)meg/gameshark/backup/nachos thing.

The closest I've really come to modding is swapping on a PS1 and Saturn, burning discs for Dreamcast, and owning a flash cart for GBC. Sadly that bullshit eventually broke the Saturn and Dreamcast disc drives.

I've also done simple fixes to restore an NES front-loader to working condition several times (that cartridge pin fix) and hacked the back overhang off a Sega Power Base Converter so it'll fit on my Model 2 Genesis.

I haven't done any permanent mods, but like soft mods on psx (some weird off brand gameshark and a spring to trick the console into thinking the lid is closed when you switch disks). I put CFW on the psp. I also used a gameshark and creative use of the psp as a usb drive (normal ones didn't work) to back up saves on my ps2, so I didn't have to buy overpriced memory cards. Now I just use emulators for those old consoles, so I don't have to bother with any of that stuff.

To be honest I'm not sure, I certainly don't remember there being a Saturn piracy scene back then, but that's probably because the console sold so badly it just never developed.
I have that cart too, and I use it to play my pal games on the Jap Saturn.

There were solder-in chips to pirate, I had a friend who had a shitload of HK classy-looking burnt games and a chipped system. Never heard of any cart stuff, though.

I just remembered! I bought a modded Original Xbox through Kijiji because it came with a burned copy of Fatal Frame. Wasn't too impressed with its condition though. The disc trays would get stuck. Ended up selling it.
