Protip: Just don't correspond with TV Licensing. Their main weapon is their database of addresses and they only usually call round during office hours when most people are at work. If you refuse to talk to them or let them in or anything, they can't determine whether or not you have a TV and they have only limited resources so very rarely get a search warrant.

What happens is this. You get a nastygram reminding "The Legal Occupier" that they need a TV licence. A month later they send a red nastygram threatening "home visits" and "enforcement action." They keep trying. Someone comes round, usually in office hours when you're at work, and leaves a card. You ignore it. They give up and the cycle starts again.

They also use pre-printed clipart to look like stamps saying "Enforcement Visit Approved" with the printed signature. However it's always signed "J. Hales" and the letter is printedly signed in my area by a Jane Powell, Plymouth Enforcement Division. It's fooling nobody.

Meanwhile they have like 4 detector vans nationwide which don't work if you don't use a CRT television (the colours aren't bright enough) and they'd need to get RIPA approval to use packet sniffing of Wi Fi and if you hardwire your compy to the router this doesn't work either.
I'm pretty sure if you showed up at a shack in rural Alabama asking about a TV license you'd fucking disappear.

It's like, "we want to fund our nonsense propaganda television station, but we also want everyone to be able to see our propaganda, so lets make television broadcasting free to access and then just keep a fucking log of every television bought so we can harass women who are home alone into buying the license". In the US we can't even maintain a national registry of guns because the gun owners would start executing anyone from ATF who swung by to try and enforce it, but in the UK you have a registry of television and computer monitor owners.

I am all but certain this is some communist-level demoralization tactics.

Don't worry, I know most of that. It's not like they gonna come anyway, they have "Hate crimes" to rush off and stop. That and those fatal butter knifes being carried round the street. Thanks for telling me anyways.

Something else to note if you do have a TV (But don't use it for television) and they do somehow enter your house some of the real scummy ones may ask you to plug the TV and aerial and turn the TV on (Pretending that they don't know how to) in an attempt to try and incriminate you as someone illegally viewing it without a licence. Not all of them are like this but some have tried pulling that shit and I think that the company behind this whole thing should be made a lot more transparent because it's clear they use intimidation tactics. I wonder if they get paid on commission that's why some of them are so pushy.

just keep a fucking log of every television bought

They stopped doing that in 2013. In any event, if you buy a TV second hand from some bloke down the pub, they can't possibly tell. They also never tracked computer monitors.

They tried to make you have a licence to watch BBC iPlayer but they only require you to insert your postcode to see if that address is licenced. I put in SW1A 0AA, which I suspect many other people did. That's the postcode for the Houses of Parliament.

TV Licencing has been criticised for heavy handedness for decades. Here's Not the Nine O'Clock News (on the BBC no less) parodying their ads in 1980:

They do.

Also, TV detector vans work by, I shit you not, effectively peering into your window with a huge fuck off lens and seeing if what you're watching is what is on using algorithms and shit. I know this because I saw a witness statement from a Court hearing about that a while back. Signed by the TV licencing bod in question. I might see if I have it saved somewhere.

So you can just block that shit with thick curtains?

So TV license vans could essentially be defeated by just sticking a large piece of plastic on a window.

We will probably just see the BBC funding become like a tax like how the US taxes funds PBS I mean it already kind of is but for some reason has a special name and collection service to pretend it is somehow separate from the government. How much money is being spent on TV licence inspectors? Probably not enough to cover the people they catch it's like the anti piracy programs that software developers buy it often costs them more (In buying it and the controversy it generates) than just putting basic anti piracy shit on.

That and the inspiration Dystopian future society of Terry Gilliam's Brazil, which I might as well call the present rather than the future.

Brazil is how Victoria Climbié's abuse was overlooked, how the Rochdale, Rotherham, Oxford, and Telford sex trafficking gangs got away with it for so long, how serial fraudsters like a gentlemen I have the misfortune to be suing right now get away with it, and so forth. They all insisted that it was someone else's problem. Because the UK public sector is full of people who care too much about internal procedures and not enough about end results.

There's not a whole lot I can say on the matter that hasn't already been said, save perhaps this. While the ruling against Dankula is probably the most high-profile example of an overreach like this in recent memory, it falls, shockingly, in with a very consistent pattern with the extremist left that I've seen since 2012, and I'd like to share my thoughts on it with you.

If nothing else, it offers some hope on today:

A consistent pattern I've noticed with a lot of extremist leftists - a pattern dating back to at least 2012 - is that the extremist left has an inherent belief that it can dominate matters if only it can stop its enemies from speaking out. Now while my area of veterancy mostly surrounds the Autism Holy War, I've seen this pattern play out dozens of times since then, so it's certainly worth noting.

Traditionally, the extremist left gets into position by abusing the good nature of other people and only mutates into the caustic shit we tend to make fun of here once it's sure of its powerbase. Once in place, it's quick to solidify a power-base for itself and quickly moves to maintain control. How they do this, usually, is via fear; the extremist left are not a majority and don't usually have the ability to maintain one, so antagonizing others into shutting up and staying quiet is the greatest weapon they have. Even today, on communities of extreme leftists, this mindset persists, where they unironically think they can intimidate the alt-right into submission, that they can de-platform their enemies into irrelevance, and, in essence, persecute their opposition out of existence.

However, there's a caveat to this. Initially, these efforts will be successful at intimidating the rabble into silence, and many people will shut up and go away rather than risk the big guns of the extremist left, who see zero problem with using any means, no matter how foul, to shut down opposition. Usually they use public shaming and threats to curb opposition, but even here, they tend to fuck up: because the extremist left always overplays its hand and always tries to play itself off like it has capital it simply does not have, they always overextend and show that despite the bluster, for all their power, they're fucking vulnerable as shit, and once people know this, they get paranoid. They constantly hunt for enemies to destroy - anything to give them an "easy win" they can laud over enemies to intimidate them and use to consolidate further power for themselves. And so they go after a target of opportunity: maybe it's a group of nerds fed up with the identity politics shit. Maybe it's a single autist who's sick of seeing the constant -ist screaming. Maybe it's some coarse shitposter who simply doesn't give a shit. Regardless of who it is, however, the extremist left guns for them, hardcore.

It doesn't work. Not how they'd like, at least.

Facts aren't on the extremist left's side, and while they operate with the surety of religious zealots, they've been in the echo-chamber so long that they're completely out-of-touch with reality and many of the "easy wins" they were hoping for are anything but. Too often they rush to judgment with what they think is a straight flush but in actuality is a 4 of clubs, a joker, a random card from a Munchkin expansion, and a Draw Four Wild. When they don't do this, they fuck up in some other way: Maybe they thought they had a slam-dunk case against someone only to have no proof of their claims or having to gun for a much weaker sentence due to a lack of evidence. Maybe they succeed at shutting up a target, only for the target to continue to be a thorn in their side in some other way. And maybe they just flat-out lose.

The end result, almost without exception, is the same: Whatever wins they had in gunning for some shithead, they failed to heed the wisdom of the Hedgehog and the Fox (that it's better to leave a lesser evil well enough alone than to risk a greater one by removing it). By going after the target so viciously, they invariably expose themselves where they're weakest. Sure, they'll be able to use any wins from this to try to make visible examples of those who oppose them, and that will intimidate some, but there's going to be others who see this and will fuck with the powers that be simply for the hell of it, because fuck that guy, or because they have nothing to lose. They make their target into a free speech martyr, and in so doing, ensure there will be those who follow in their stead. And it will continue until the extremist left either implodes or is otherwise removed from power, because each overreach just feeds opposition.

I don't have much faith in the UK. By all accounts, they're already cucked to competition standards, and things might be too far gone to save. However, woe betide anyone who thinks that the conviction today is going to stop other people from trying to fuck with the UK's government overreaches in the exact same fashion Dankula did.
