Apparently she had a rabbit as a kid and all it did was bite. And she tells me we did have a rabbit when I was little, that I have no memory of, and all that did was bite and kick. So she just figured rabbits were horrible animals that bite a lot. Most likely both rabbits were treated like toys and got pissed off. The rabbits she had as a kid were meat rabbits during wartime, so not exactly spoiled pets either.
Caesar is so polite I don't think it's ever occurred to him that he could bite me. But then I don't hassle him much and he can always move away from me if he wants.
 
Pretty much any animal will lash out however they can when harassed. Hermit crabs are pretty chill when handled as long as you do it correctly and respect their boundaries. Every crab has its own personality, so some won't enjoy being handled by a giant. My favorite one is a total diva that hates being handled. He even has his own crabby version of flipping me off.

I love his massive attitude. It's funny.
 
It has been 3 years since I adopted Cat #1, so little boy is going to get special treats.
He is the funniest cat I've ever seen, but also sweet and snuggly. I am so glad he got rescued and that he found his way to me. His start at life wasn't a good one but now I try to make him the happiest cat ever.
 
I didn't grow up with cats so it was surprising when I adopted one and she wasn't quite what I expected. I always heard they're so aloof, don't give a shit about you unless they're getting food. She doesn't care much about food at all but she's really attached. Greets me at the door with excited meows like a dog and follows me around the house all day, has an impressively wide range of meow pitches and gestures to communicate what she wants. She's a cool little friend.
 
I miss my doge :( I have a friend house sitting for us while I am away but I worry that Bear is going to be mad at me for traveling abroad without him.

Rabbits can fuck your shit up. They have long teeth and claws. Watership Down didn't really exaggerate in terms of the violence they're capable of.

One of my friends with a 13+ foot Burmese python pointed out once that the snake being fed live would be pretty dangerous for the snake, since a rabbit could easily kill a giant snake if it bit the wrong place.

Prey animals do not fuck around.
 
Any advice for keeping ageing cats comfortable?

My older lady has noticeably declined with her arthritis in the past two weeks, missing or not even daring to try jumps that were fine literally a month ago. For a long time her grooming has been getting worse and the one time she's as fast and nimble as ever is if you're trying to brush her, she'll claw the shit out of you. She frequently treads mud round the house, I don't mind the extra cleaning but seeing it increase just shows she's declining. I know its anthropomorphising but her loss of dignity breaks my heart.

She's due a meds checkup with the vet in a couple of weeks so I'll discuss it with them, and they are really good, make suggestions other than drugs when appropriate. She's on Solensia and was on Loxicam previously. Other than her arthritis her bloods say she's in great health for a cat her age. She eats and drinks fine, I buy high quality food, and she's on glucosamine supplements.

She has loads of comfy places to sleep around the house and no trouble accessing any of them, we have water stations around with the water in glasses as she prefers that, her feeder is also raised. She gets much love and pets every day.

In herself, she's as happy as a maximum tortitude cat will ever let on, but I'm concerned she's suffering. Over the past few years I've watched her world get smaller as her mobility declines. The Solensia was amazing at first, and the loxicam before that, knowing she's on such decent meds and its still not enough just makes me sad.
 
Sent my cat off for radiation treatment for her thyroid last week, and she’s having a hard time with being isolated in a kennel and only getting interaction when fed or cleaned twice a day.

She’s super social and friendly, but you can’t explain to a cat that she needs to stay isolated due to radiation. And now she’s just sleeping a lot, not eating as much, and crying when someone comes in protective gear to care for her.

It’s cheaper and better in the long run, but I wish she didn’t go through this. I’d take her home now if I could, but at this point kitty is technically an orphan source and it wouldn’t be safe for the other animals.
 
My dog was an 'only' for his almost three years of being alive, but we just emigrated and now he has three brothers and sisters and a home in the mountains to roam with them. I was worried he wouldn't adjust to having company as he doesn't always get on with male dogs and one of the siblings is a boy, but they're all getting along like a house on fire, and he's just loving having the extra space to run and play with them in.

It's been absolutely wonderful seeing them accept him into the family pack and watching them all dick around together. He's clearly going to be very happy here, so I will too :heart-full:

Idk what other cat ladies might need this, but Churu cat treats have chicken in them, even if they don't list chicken in the ingredients, and aren't chicken-flavored.

One of our cats is allergic to chicken, so we make a conscious effort to avoid it with her, because the consequences of her getting chicken are disgusting. So, we got a salmon Churu treat for her, to mix a flea-repellant medicine in it (Credelio, it makes them toxic to fleas and it kicks ass).

She eats it.

For a week after she had the worst gastro problems. She would fart so loud, I thought she was a human.

I'm still annoyed, but it's over now, and I just want to warn anyone who might have the same problem.

If anyone else notices gastro issues with their cat, and you have no idea what it is... Try eliminating chicken, and see if it's allergy! She developed this after literally 0 health problems for over 10 years.

Sounds like your girl is having an ideal old age.
Soft pet steps are fairly cheap on aliexpress or similar if you want to make more places accessible. I'd look for more toys you can use yourself with her. My old sped cat stopped doing much and she was probably fine with that but I felt I had to provide more interactive play as she wasn't getting so much stimulation exploring the environment on her own. I find old animals often just stop looking for lots of stimulus, it's not always that they're stuck and frustrated by their lack of mobility. Though I had to start picking mine up to put her on the windowsill then wait around to get her down when she got too doddery to jump, she'd still make frustrated noises and want to get up there. She needed help cleaning in the end but I think she appreciated a damp cloth wipe-down.

What foul stinking preserved animal parts does the thread recommend for tiny dogs? Our chihuahua quite likes beef tracheas and puffed chicken feet and he's eaten a few pig and sheep ears but a lot of natural chewy things are too big for his mouth. I don't feel good about giving him rawhide. I see some fish-based chews but he won't eat fish, he just rolls in it. Some sort of thin stick would be ideal.
