Creepy Unsolved Mysteries - From unsolved murders to unidentified people to unexplained supernatural events, what are some of the creepiest unsolved mysteries you've ever heard of?

When I was a kid, there was one Unsolved Mysteries segment that scared the hell out of me. It concerned a family in Wisconsin in 1986. They moved into a house and after they bought secondhand bunk beds, all kinds of weird shit started happening. The children would be terrorized by what they described as a witch with glowing red eyes and an aura like fire. They were constantly sick, too. The father described having overpowering feelings of dread, fearing he'd come home one day from work and they'd all be dead, having been violently murdered. One night he came home and saw a fire in his garage but when he ran to his front door and looked back, it was gone. He also described a mist that gathered inside the house one night, and being menaced by a disembodied voice. He asked a relative, a hardened skeptic, to stay with his family one night while he was at work. Not long after they all settled down for bed, the relative became a believer when the same spectral being that constantly frightened the children appeared to him. That was the last straw for the mother-she and the relative and the children fled the house and never returned. Later, they had the bunk beds destroyed.

Here's the segment. Apparently, it scared so many people they rarely aired it again after it premiered.
Wait, I recall seeing a movie with somewhat similar plot. I remember, that thing manifested itself as a lightning with vaguely human outline and in the end they've trapped that entity in the ice, but when it escaped in front of everyone some skeptic guy just told "I've seen nothing" and that was it.

OMFG I'm a grown ass woman and I'll STILL get nightmares about that segment! Scared the shit out of me as a kid. When they'd said they'd destroyed the bunkbeds I remember feeling relieved.

To contribute to the thread, here is a disappearance that I always seem to have pop into my head: Sarah Avon. Apparently they have a person of interest, but the man is dead. Creepy looking fucker, too.

I also think about this case often. The mob got her, I'm sure. She'd told a friends and loved ones should anyone come after her, she'd kick off her pumps and run. Her shoes were found in the street and a neighboring lawn when she disappeared.

That's a tragic case.

Based on the circumstances, as well as those photos taken years later of the drugged-out hooker who looks exactly like her, I'm almost certain some crew members on the ship conspired to kidnap her, and sell her into sexual slavery. Few people are aware of how many sketchy and outright criminal things take place on board cruise ships, and how little the line companies and governments do about them.
The timing makes sense. While gangway operations would start a couple of hours later, they would have either been in close proximity or already working on docking when she disappeared from her stateroom. It's a bit of an open secret that major players like DCL and RC pay for preferred treatment from port authorities. While customs still boards and clears the vessel, it's usually a very brief and cursory inspection. In my experience the officials rarely left the small gangway/processing area. Customs officials are supposed to check tickets/ID of anyone debarking but this is very easily bypassed. Authorities primarily rely on vessels to self-report their own records/issues at the gangway.

This is all typical business maneuvering and I don't think these situations are direct evidence of leadership/company involvement. However, all of this would be known by every crew member aboard. In many cases there are cargo/crew gangways that would not be too difficult to surreptitiously move a person through. I doubt the band member was involved as performance talent has some of the shortest contracts and they usually aren't as familiar with the specific ship/procedures.

Once it's clear something has happened, the company/vessel are going to be in damage control mode. They're foreign registered so local authorities are mostly powerless. They control any evidence like CCTV and they have onboard security firmly within their control. Even if they do know exactly what happened, it's probably understood it will never be disclosed and evidence is destroyed. I believe this to be exactly what happened in the disappearance associated with DCL later.

The woman is spotted on camera, but only one camera. That isn't how Disney operates. Outside of "hotel areas" pretty much the entire vessel has CCTV coverage. This is retained on servers that <5 people aboard have control/access to and they are regularly backed up shoreside. I know for a fact they will delete any potential sources of serious negative PR if the order comes from on-high. Given the order, onboard security will detain/interrogate crew until they get answers if they're ordered to do so. They would not settle unless they knew the outcome was unescapable. (I can verify I was in a position to learn this information first-hand, I can provide evidence to mods but it would really PL me to post details here.)

My personal opinion is Disney probably brought the family into a meeting with strict NDAs. They presented two options: Disney will fight this tooth and nail, and they will never find out what happened. Alternatively, off-the-record they can provide video and an explanation, along with a substantial financial sum. We know the family took an undisclosed amount for some reason, even referencing an explanation would have been strictly prohibited as part of the agreement. This is how they operate for petty bullshit and far less severe crime that happens on board. Security investigates, results are shared under NDA, and guests are offered money/refunds. It's made clear if they don't take this option, Disney will outspend them and make sure the more sordid details never see the light of day.

Oh yes the supernatural. I know thing or two about stuff like that. My sister is no joke a magnet for spirits evil or good. She could entire a haunted house and a ghost could easily leave haunting that place to follow her. Apparently she has found some why's to block that shit apparently.

I would never go on a cruise with all the fucked up shit that goes on in those ships. I expressed this elsewhere on the farms and got negrated and called dumb, though. People think that the worst thing that happens aboard cruise lines is the occasional norovirus outbreak and that the really bad shit happens on land in foreign ports (if you leave a designated area or whatever) when it's the ships themselves that are so unsafe. And unless this can be brought out into the open then nothing about the shady coverup practices will change.

Back when Dark 5 was still a decent youtube channel they did a 5 mysterious cruise ship disappearances video that included Amy Bradley. That video plus a bit of my own research forever put me off going on a cruise ship.

That's all the information you'd be given if you managed to catch this obscure, and disturbing broadcast on WMAQ, Chicago on January 14th, 1989. Well, that, and this low-quality, grainy, and unsettling photo.
missing-poster.jpg

No height, weight, age, when she was last seen, where she was last seen, nothing. Just a name, and number. Allegedly, this photo was on screen for hours until it finally went off in the morning when the channel resumed its usual programming.

The exact same broadcast played two years later under the exact same circumstances, albeit with a much shorter duration.

This is all that is known about this case. The number is real, and did at one point lead to the Youth Department of the Chicago PD, but when people called to ask about Joanna, the police informed them that no such person was ever in their database.

In fact, outside of a few threads, and recent videos on the subject, there is no mention of Joanna Lopez* anywhere. No newspapers, no police reports, no school records, no birth certificates, nothing. She's not even in any missing person databases. Scarily, the only proof we have of Joanna's existence are those two eerie broadcasts.

Theories range from this being a prank, to a hack a la the Max Headroom Incident, to an early ARG, to Joanna being found fairly quickly, and no update ever being posted, and the 1991 broadcast just being a mistake, and so on, and so forth. However, one recent theory suggests that Joanna Lopez is the identity of a Jane Doe that was found murdered in 1994.

The person that murdered her was caught, charged, and sentenced, but he says doesn't know who she actually is. All he knows is that he picked her up when she was working as a prostitute.

Admittedly, while this theory possible, the photo, date of the broadcasts, and last name of Joanna lead me to believe that this is not the same person.

The other most popular theory is that Joanna isn't real, and that her, and her subsequent broadcasts were just testing screens that were used in place of other real missing people.

This would explain the poor quality of the photo, why there's no other info on it about her, why Joanna doesn't seem to exist anywhere outside of it, why the broadcasts were shown when they were, and why their length times were so bizarre.

It might seem far-fetched, but something similar has been alleged to have happened in Mexico during the early 2000s with the case of Selene Delgado*-another supposedly missing girl with a bizarrely uncanny valley photo that has no record of existing outside of the missing broadcasts that she appears in.

Disturbingly, the channel that broadcasts Selene Delgado's missing photo also distorts her already vaguely unsettling face into horrifying uncanny nightmares for some reason. The channel has a history of doing bizarrely creepy things such as posting weird-ass videos to their twitter in the middle of the night and then deleting them before morning.

No one knows why they do this. More specifically, no one knows why they singled out Selene in particular to mess with. Some say it's so the viewers remember the faces of the other real missing people better, and some people say it's because the channel just likes to shitpost irl, which judging from their twitter, seems to be the most likely case.

Whatever it is, Selene and Joanna are completely unknown outside of their respected broadcasts. Despite that someone clearly went through the effort of repeating broadcasts that they were missing, the fact that no other information was ever given about them even during those times, and just how unprofessional, and disturbing those broadcasts were cast doubt upon the two ever being actual missing persons to begin with. And that's the scariest part, really.

It's one thing to go missing.

It's a whole 'nother thing to go missing, and for your case to be handled so poorly that people doubt that you were ever real at all.

*There is another Joanna Lopez, but it's a different one that isn't relevant to this case because she's too young.
**This Selene Delgado has nothing to do with the viral facebook thing that happened a few years ago.

The identical image appeared on WMAQ after signoff, 3 or 4 years later.
Instead of remaining on screen all night, it was pulled after a minute.

No explanation was ever given.

US equiv of a 'numbers station' ?

US equiv of a 'numbers station' ?
Number stations are military codes. Why would anyone transfer a military code twice on TV in the middle of the night? I am inclined to believe it was a TV hack. As for Delgado - yeah, Mexico has a shortage of missing people, that's why they made this one up. In the same broadcast there are pictures where you can barely see any face features, yet no one gives a shit.

Maybe its just being high but something about this just unnerves me. Great write up.

MISSING: JOANNA LOPEZ-CALL: 312-744-5594
None of the theories make sense to me. Signal hijacking makes the most sense.
1) This happens 2 years before the Max Headroom incident and then Joanna two years after Max Headroom.
2) This happens at station sign off when most/every one who would be paying attention to the broadcast at the station would have been gone or focused on packing up for the night.
3) The piss poor quality of the image
4) The fact that no one has been able to identify the person (although number 3 also would play a roll in this).

Surprised no one has mentioned Walker County Jane Doe yet, given how much online attention she's gotten....
Forgive me if it's already been mentioned, but Walker County Jane Doe was officially identified through genetic genealogy sometime last month. Her family have declined to publicly release her name for the time being, though there are rumours floating around saying it may be released this Nov 1st (the 41st anniversary of her murder). All that's known at the moment is that she was 14 years old at her time of death and had a "white Anglo" name with the initials "S. J.". She wasn't even from Texas. Her family claim to have reported her missing, although since no missing person matching her description has ever been found in any online databases, it's thought her file got lost or thrown out over the decades.

More details were released today. Her name was Sherri Ann Jarvis and she was from Stillwater, Minnesota. She was removed from her family's home for truancy and taken into state custody, from which she ran escaped and ran away, never being seen again until she was found in Texas. She apparently wrote her parents a letter telling them she'd come back home, though evidently, she never did. Seems like the poor kid had a tough life.

ETA: They still haven't caught the bastard who killed her.

Demon's Alley, New Jersey. Actual name being "new city village". It's essentially a stretch of road in a town in NJ where all the fucking residents went missing out of fucking nowhere. There's several theories as to what might have happened and the fucking buildings fell into disrepair over the years unttil they got demolished. Since then it's just been pretty much nothing but a road people go down to either get to some other place or some tourist spot where people make clickbait about demons. However, I just checked the place on google maps again after remembering it and it looks like you can't go through it anymore. The road is greyed out and only visible if you zoom in, and when you go to streetview there's like no actual way through aside from a dilapidated and overgrown entrance to the road on one side. Guess taxpayer money wasnt enough to keep that road drivable lmao.

EDIT: Can't find any of the clickbait videos anymore either with people going "OO SO SCARED IS THAT A DEMON?!" Shits sus as hell for a several decades old anomaly. I'm starting to wonder if the "mafia and/or cult" theories and rumors might be legit cause this is fucking freaking me out now. I can literally only find a few videos talking about it and then creepypasta fanfics about the fucking place thats literally it.

This is a good one, the full story is included in the book Haunted America and includes some other frightening details. The town is Horicon, WI and the street is Larabee Street (or somewhere nearby) if you want to look at the location.

It's definitely not a reputable source, but this guy seems to think it's some kind of radon contamination. You'd think if that was the case, it would be pretty common knowledge though?

The Lamont Mansion a.k.a. Summerwind has piqued my interest again.

Less about the supposed ghost activity itself, and more about the psychological toll it took on the successive residents who lived there. Even from its hey-day under Lamont it was reported to mess with people's heads and make them angry or deeply depressed.

I personally have a hunch the Bober's were exaggerating and embellishing some of the experiences to for financial gain; but there is a lot of competing info about the house.

Okay, for those of you that have seen 'The Thing' and are creeped out by Antactica... The Rodney Marks case.
Two years after it's featured in the movie 'X-Files: Fight the Future' in 1998, something strange happened at the Amundsen-Scott Antarctic base in 2000.

Marks, an Australian Astrophysicist who is working on the ASTRO telescope, approaches the station doctor complaining of fever, stomach pain and nausea.
There are two more recorded visits to station doctor Robert Thompson over the next thirty-six hours, but no diagnosis is made.
Marks dies shortly afterwards and his body stored 'on ice' for six months until it can be moved to New Zealand for an autopsy.

The cause of death was found to be methanol poisoning, which is bizarre, to say the least.
Marks had no obvious reason to kill himself. His new girlfriend was at the base with him; he was in no financial difficulties, and was about to finish a major academic project.
There was no known reason for anyone to have murdered him, and the base was well stocked with regular alcohol, making misadventure unlikely.
There were needle marks found on his arms, but his body tested negative for illicit drugs.
The only methanol on site was a dilute form for cleaning purposes.
Doctor Robert Thompson is currently 'whereabouts unknown' and the case was listed at inquest as 'not a prank, not a homicide, and not a suicide'.
A Freedom of Information request showed that the US Government had applied significant pressure to the New Zealand government over the case (purpose unknown). Raytheon and the National Science Foundation have been uncooperative with attempts to access their files regarding the death, to the point of denying they have any files at all.

To this day it's widely believed that Marks was murdered, although methanol is a bizarre, unreliable and difficult poison.
Suicide is unlikely given his repeated attempts to access medical care. Misadventure is also unlikely as nobody else was recorded as suffering similar poisoning. The death of Rodney Marks will likely never be solved.

Ghost Story - incomplete due to my ignorance of Spanish.

My career is in factories. A disappearing field in my country and state.

Recently, I was upgrading the infrastructure of one of my facilities. The upgrades were primarily electrical, but included lighting (due to power company incentives).
This area has a solid community of Mexicans - legally and illegally in the US.
A lead worker came up to me to personally thank my for the lights.

His broken English and Spanish communicated the workers gratitude. The old (halide) lights were over 50 yrs old, mostly dead, and the remaining few were dark. Most of their light was obtained by opening doors and the uncovered factory skylights and windows. However in the cold autumn mornings (open at 5 AM), the lights could take 20 minutes to glow and the chill forced all windows/doors closed. Absolute blackness in late November at 5 AM.

These are the days the workers feared. The (mostly female) workers would clock-in and wait silently with their husbands for the lights to activate.
If children were present, they were told to hold hands and _not_ to wander away with ANYONE.

The worker explained that the factory was built inside an old rural cemetery. There is one restless spirit that resides in the darkest areas of the plant. The female ghost appears as a black shadow, with long flowing hair. On at least 2 occasions she had lured children away from their parents in the darkest hours of the workday (5AM or 5PM). Luckily, the children were retrieved prior to disaster. Always found in the same spot - an old, hand built wooden staircase. This is also the worst lit part of the facility - none of the old lights could penetrate it.

Each time, a distracted child followed the 'Dark Lady' mindlessly. They believed her to have some authority in the place. The workers believed that her grave must be located in the vicinity of the staircase.
Stories of other spectres followed - in other areas of the plant. My Spanish is too poor to understand what was said, however...

Now-
My crew and I have hung over 100 lights now. Nowhere for ghosts to hide.
Personally - I don't believe in 'ghosts'. However, my crew said that they felt something 'weird' in that area.
I felt nothing. I saw nothing. I went 'hunting' for ghosts and experienced nothing.

New Jersey so I'd go with mafia, personally. My parents are from New Jersey and that old "joke" about the mafia being all over that state isn't actually much of a joke, it turns out. My guess is that all the people that went "missing" all had connections to a rival faction that got taken out.
