Cube (1997) getting Japanese remake - Canadian movie gets Japanese remake before Hollywood reboot

I don't understand why there is so much "death game" Japanese media, and it's incredibly popular there, like the finger prints of SAW is almost everywhere in those stories. People shit on Isekai, but that subgenre has been prominent for a longer time. I think death games are narratively worse because you can get away with never explaining why a character is Isekai'd outside of just saying it's an afterlife or something, but with death games 99% of the time the explanation for why these events are happening are incredibly disappointing compared to the mystery they created.

I actually like Cube, but I feel like they are going to miss the point of the movie or something. The cast just doesn't immediately sit well with me, they look too young and conveniently attractive, also three of the male character look like each other.

Update: another teaser trailer plus info on the characters:

Storyline:
About six people who find themselves trapped in a maze-like cube and have to figure a way out, while evading fatal traps. 6 people are locked in a mysterious cube shaped room. These 6 people are: 29-year-old engineer Yuichi Goto, 37-year-old association employee Asako Kai, 31-year-old Freeter Shinji Ochi, 13-year-old middle school student Chiharu Uno , 39-year-old mechanic Hiroshi Ide and 61-year-old company executive Kazumasa Ando. These 6 people are complete strangers to each other. They don't know why they are locked in the room, but they try to escape out of the mysterious cube. If they can't decipher the code, they won't get out of the cube.

TIL Cube wasn’t originally a Japanese movie. For some reason I’d always automatically assumed that the original was based on something Japanese, because the concept totally seems like something they would’ve come up with.

While we’re waiting here’s a few deleted scenes from the original

Wonder if the remake will have an empty room scene as well

The director Shimizu had this to say about the remake:
www.joblo.com/cube-japanese-remake-trailer/

"No one can resist the powerful system of the Cube. In making this film, it was as though we entered the Cube itself. (That was because we shot the entire film in one place.) We then had to confront ourselves. What lurks in the abyss of the self – hope or despair? You will soon be in the Cube with us. In fact, you may already be in it.”
