I think we're dealing with a base difference in linguistic choice here. You can be proud of your grandfather for that shit, 100%, and it can be an inspiration to better yourself.I see no problem celebrating the people who came before you and acknowledging their struggles as long as you aren't trying to claim that you are those people. My grandfather fought the Japs and I marvel at the shit he went through, but I didn't fight them so there's nothing for me to be "proud" of. I didn't do shit.
I'll consider myself a great man if I go to the grave having accomplished half the shit my veteran grandparents did. I'm proud that they were the men they were. Doesn't mean I think it makes me inherently superior in any way, or that their accomplishments were mine. It's a standard to try to live up to.
